Chapter 2 - NUMBER NINE||

As the assistant scientist led me through chamber after chamber, I knew something was wrong.

This wasn't the way to the observation room.

I remained indifferent and silent. Naturally, the assistant wouldn't say a word either.

We stopped in front of a white door. Without waiting for permission, I pushed it open.

Inside, four scientists, including Dr. Yan and two unfamiliar men were already waiting.

"NINE, you're here. Come, quickly, and greet our guests," Dr. Yan said, unusually enthusiastic.

Too bad, I refused to give him a good face.

I gave a cursory nod and walked to the center of the room, standing still and silent.

Dr. Yan cleared his throat to ease the awkwardness. "We recently invented a new machine that may be able to detect the source of your powers. Just place your hands on it."

I walked over and did as instructed.

"Good! Now inject your powers into it slowly."

Now he'd poked a sore spot.

Others may not know, but I know my own body well...these so-called "powers" aren't mine.

It's confusing, but ever since I can remember, I've sensed different entities inside me, not in my body, but my mind. Like those with spatial abilities who keep beast companions in their personal space and communicate mentally... except I've never spoken with them. Still, they respond to my emotions.

That's how I've been able to fool everyone.

Deep in thought, I didn't realize I

Was frozen in place until Dr. Yan urged me again.

Taking a deep breath, I calmly placed my hands on the machine, keeping a straight face.

However, my mind was far from calm, I pleaded, Come on... do your magic. Think of it as rent for living freely in my head. Come on.

Alas,nothing.

I secretly glanced around. Everyone was staring, breath held.

Especially the two strangers, they looked ready to pounce, holding pens and notebooks, afraid to blink.

I withdrew my hands and said flatly, "It's done."

Everyone: "...Huh?"

"I said, I'm done."

My ears burned with embarrassment, but I didn't let it show. "Seems like your machine doesn't work."

The two strangers now turned to Dr. Yan.

He rushed over to check the machine.

"Are you sure you injected your powers into it?"

One of the men spoke up.

I looked him straight in the eye. Although I was a bit short, my cold expression made up for it.

"Yes. I'm sure."

"Then why didn't we detect anything?"

"Well, Mr...?" I paused. He didn't have a name tag.

"You can call me Mr. Wang."

I nodded. "Mr. Wang, I'm sure you've read about me, and why Dr. Yan is developing a special machine just for me."

I didn't need to say more. The implication was enough to make him realize how foolish his question was.

Sure enough, his face turned awkward.

No one here doubted I had powers. They all remembered what happened.

Eight years ago, a spatial crack had opened in the experimental room once.

a scientist was dragged screaming into the void.

At that time,I was only six.

No device could detect my powers and I wasn't affected by magical attacks.

So, they decided to get physical, to open me up.

Back then, the operating scientist wasn't Dr. Yan, but Dr. Han.

They watched in horror as a crack in space appeared, swallowing Dr. Han whole before he could even cast a defense spell.

Since then, anyone who offended me… disappeared.

The People who were present at that time assumed it was me. and i didn't clarify.

Later, Dr Yan seems to have found a new use for me.

That's how I've managed to survive in peace as an anomaly.

Back to the present.

Mr. Wang opened his mouth to argue, but I didn't give him the chance.

"If Mr. Wang is still unconvinced," I said, smiling faintly, "I'd be happy to try again."

I paused, then added,

"But as everyone knows… my powers only manifest when directed at a living target... I'd like to trouble Mr. Wang."

Immediately, every assistant near Mr. Wang stepped away. Even his companion.

He now had a four-meter radius of empty space around him.

Mr. Wang's face paled.

He was from the Council. Of course he knew what kind of anomaly I was.

"Haha, Miss Nine is joking. Of course I believe you! I just asked to clarify."

I narrowed my eyes, still smiling, saying nothing.

He broke out in a cold sweat and glared at Dr. Yan.

The latter quickly cleared his throat. "Alright, Assistant Mu, take Nine back. Today's observation is over."

Assistant Mu rushed to my side and led me out.

The room exhaled in relief.

————

A figure could be seen kneeling in a huge hall, the air dignified and solemn.

A while later, a servant came to lead the way and he was soon led to a lavish room.

At the middle of the chair sat a seventy year old looking man.

As he spoke, an uncomfortable sound almost like a wood rubbing against the wall sounded.

"Dr yan, i trust that there are results?"

The man who was keeping his head down, looked up.

"Your excellence, i just need a few more years, the ultimate weapon is hard to make, yes, just a few more years".

Dr yan kept on saying that until the old man cut him off.

"NONSENSE!...we dont have a few more years, you have proven to be incompetent Dr yan".

The old man took another deep breath before continuing.

"And so, we had a meeting with the other elders whether to execute plan B for the children... it is approved.

"You may leave".

"When you go back, prepare the subjects ".
