Chapter 68 - Magic’s Might

Recalling the time she threw a car at him, Bonnie knew what to do.

Twisting her hands, magic flowed into the area, the ground rumbling as her idea took shape.

A spike shot out underneath him, aiming for the face.

Tilting his head just enough to avoid it, his eyes met hers.

A dozen more spikes then shot out, skewering the unconscious Klaus as Finn easily avoided them.

He charged.

She waited.

She needed him closer, then the ground saturated with her magic erupted, knocking him off his feet before pulling him in as the entire earth around moved with her will, taking away his speed.

Finn scowled, clawing his way out as a wave of cement and dirt buried him.

Knowing it wasn't enough, Bonnie had the earth and everything else push him down, trying to suffocate him; there was little he could do to fight back.

Confident in her superiority, she used the earth to pull him back up, using metal stripped from cars to bind him, and plant him against a wall. She wanted to see the look on his face when she won.

"Look at you now. The mighty Originals, at the edge of defeat. You all felt so superior when you strutted into my town and slaughtered my friends, bet you never thought this day would come," Bonnie spat.

He knew it was a risk coming here, call it hubris, foolishness, selfishness, or what have you, but he wasn't going to let anyone take his revenge away from him.

Finn sighed, "You seem to have some grand delusion about me. I assure you, I would have been perfectly fine with you ending me after I finished taking care of the rest."

"SHUT UP! Enough of your lies!" shouted Bonnie. "We'll see how you feel when I take this amulet," she said, reaching over and ripping it off.

A moment of silence passes as both wonder why nothing is happening. Then Bonnie moved for the rings, thinking she had made a mistake.

Suddenly, there was a shout, "Get away from him!" and Bonnie was blown away by Davina.

With a wave of magic, Finn was freed, and Sage was there by his side.

Finn instantly shielded his wife's eyes that were being drawn towards Bonnie, "Don't look at her, that tiara on her head kills with a look, I don't want to test the rings if we don't have to."

"Davina seems fine," Sage commented.

"It's likely made for vampires. Finn reasoned.

"Leave her to me," said Davina confidently.

"Stay safe, Davina, keep a cool head, and remember your training. I believe in you," said Finn, giving a nod filled with pride to Davina, who smiled back. He left it to her, collecting the dropped amulet and Klaus's body on his way out, moving to a safe distance away, knowing when he was outmatched.

"Here, you should wear this. It'll protect you from magic. You won't have to fear looking with this on," said Finn, handing over the amulet after recalling how the gem couldn't affect him even without it.

"What about you?" asked Sage, hesitant to accept.

"Seems I don't need it anymore," said Finn, though he didn't know why, but reasoned it may have had something to do with drinking the slayer's magic-immune blood when he gave it more thought.

.

Sensing the danger in each other, they reinforced themselves with magics far greater than they ever had before and attacked.

Bonnie, calling on the wind and flame, formed a vortex of fire in her hand before shooting it out.

Seeing the roaring tornado of fire coming at her, Davina gripped the air and lifted her hands, summoning a wedged barrier of rock between them, splitting the attack safely away from her.

Behind the barrier, Davina took out her special chalk, crushing it into a fine powder which she magically snapped to the ground into a runic circle around her.

Ready, she forcibly pushed the wedge that was blocking her view of Bonnie with a blast of magic and activated the circle, lightning crackling around her.

Dodging the wedge, Bonnie's frown deepened, not the least bit interested in fighting a fellow witch.

"Why do you defend him? You know what he is! You should be helping me kill him, free the world from these monsters!" yelled Bonnie, an aura of magic slowly starting to grow around her as she prepared herself for what was to come.

Davina sneered, thinking about how Finn's done more than anyone else in ridding the world of them. "I've heard all about you. How you befriended and helped two of the worst vampires to have walked this earth..." she scoffed, "...And you want to preach helping the world by taking out the one person doing something about it."

"HE KILLED MY BEST FRIEND! SOMEONE WHO'S DONE NOTHING WRONG!" shouted Bonnie, her magical aura pulsing with her anger.

"You mean the doppelganger? Do you even know what a doppelganger is? They're no better than vampires….

…Doppelgangers are a very rare supernatural legacy phenomenon, or better still, a supernatural event. They draw other supernatural beings to them and turn them into their loyal puppets, making them love and protect them, do their bidding. Of course, it's not all good for the doppelganger; their blood becomes highly sought after for magical purposes, and that can twist the love of others into something sinister, as I'm sure you well know…

…So you see, she was never your friend. I don't know how you can't see that with how much magic you're wielding now," Davina explained, not bothering to bring up the innocents she's killed here today, knowing she'd have an excuse for that too. She looked far too gone to be reasoned with.

Bonnie scowled deeper with every word. She could hear the truth in her words, but couldn't escape the lifelong memories she had developed growing up with her.

"Shut up! Shut up! Shut up! ALL OF YOU NEED TO SHUT UP AND DIE!" Bonnie screamed, throwing her hands out, releasing a beam of pure magical destruction.

"Tch, what a waste of magic," said Davina, forming a multi-layered translucent ring barrier before her, each one designed to absorb and redirect the power for a different spell of her choice as it passed through before stopping at the final barrier.

The first two spells morphed the land around them into giant coiling snakes made of buildings, cars, and earth. Charging at Bonnie, slithering along the ground.

The third and fourth transported the people safely away, while the fifth and sixth protected her.

Seeing the slithering monstrosities, Bonnie stops the attack, moving her hands apart, still aglow with power. She reaches down, then up, causing two massive hands of earth to pop out from underneath the snakes, mimicking her movements as she grabs them both and squeezes, crushing them within her grip.

The upper half of the snakes, unbothered, kept going.

Clutching the hidden Paragon Diamond hanging around her neck with one hand, Bonnie chanted a quick spell, releasing it with her other hand in a wave of magic at them, turning them to sludge, metal included, then a cold wind to freeze and shatter, before turning the ice into spiked projectiles, shooting towards her foe.

Arms crackling with lightning, Davina raises her hands, releasing a giant bolt of lightning straight at Bonnie, shattering and vaporizing the spikes in an instant as it slams right into her chest, sending her flying back.

Coughing painfully, Bonnie groans as she crawls back to her feet,

Squinting through the pain, she sees Davina powering up another. No time to prepare, dozens of fireballs form around her and shoot towards Davina with a flick of her hand.

Still not fully charged, Davina had to cut it short, throwing her arms up as lightning sprays from her hands, hitting all the fireballs that then exploded, blasting her backward.

Scrambling back to her feet, Davina scowls, ears ringing, she chants as does Bonnie, glaring at one another.

Finishing first, Bonnie blows a yellowish mist of decay towards Davina, rotting away everything it touches in seconds. It wouldn't bypass any shields, but this was only the first step, as she began her second chant.

Ignoring the incoming mist, Davina completed hers, space warping in front of her as an invisible bladed arc shoots out, slicing apart everything in its path, though with the street between them mostly empty, Bonnie lucked out as the mist gave way to the deadly threat, allowing her to see the danger before it could reach her.

Pausing her chant, Bonnie dove for cover as it passed, slicing cars and street poles in half behind her before she continued completing one of the few personal spells Kol taught her, a spell born from his hunger for that which he lost. Roots growing from her hands, they pierced into the ground.

Seeing the unusual sight, Davina was on guard as the roots burst from the ground, trying to wrap around her.

Dodging backward, part of the root still managed to graze her, and she immediately felt the magical drain. Empowered by that simple touch, the root quickly grows, latches on, breaks her shield, and allows the mist to reach the vulnerable area.

Feeling the rot take hold, she quickly slashes her hand in fright, cutting it off.

Running a distance away with roots chasing her, Davina empowered and solidified the ground before her, preventing any more from showing up as she spun around with a wave of burning fire, destroying the roots and mist alike, clearing the land.

Looking down at the part the root touched, she frowned at the rotted flesh that was exposed to the yellow mist, watching it fall off as it gave way to the newly regenerated.

Angered, Davina summoned up more magic than she ever had before, chanting the most dangerous spell she knew.

Feeling the surge of power coming from her foe, Bonnie was eager for more after having tasted her magic,

And then Bonnie saw it, a weakness, small cracks of magic along her face and arms, "You're body can't handle the amount of magic you're using."

"I'll manage," Davina breathed, finishing her chant, magic pooling before her into an intricate design.

"You'll die, give up," said Bonnie, weaving her root-covered hands in complex patterns, willing the many giant roots she formed into a makeshift barrier.

"I won't," said Davina, thumbing the ring on her finger, and unleashed her spell.

"Give up and give it to me!" yelled Bonnie, preparing to absorb everything.

...

"Holy shit, I may have underestimated them," said a wide-eyed Finn. He knew it was a risk to confront her, but even he didn't think she was this capable yet.

To fight Davina to this level was something else.

Even he was surprised by their level of combat, having never quite reached the same heights while alive due to his father's incessant need for all his sons to be warriors.

"You think!" exclaimed Sage in complete agreement.

The ground shaking from their magical clash.

"Alright, I've waited long enough. I'm going in. You coming?" asked Finn, dragging Klaus behind him, to stash away somewhere.

"Shouldn't we wait for it to stop?" asked Sage worriedly.

"Davina may need us," said Finn.

"She has the ring, a ring that won't work properly if a stray spell somehow obliterates you," Sage pointed out.

"True, but that shouldn't happen, and I have a weapon that could help," said Finn, recalling what the slayer said about her blood, now his if he was right.

Sage sighed, "Well, what's the plan?"

Explaining how his blood was like poison to them now, which started a quick side argument about what that would mean for Sage, not being able to drink from him anymore.

He brought her back on track, believing he could maybe somehow recreate the circumstances with Davina's help so it wouldn't be an issue.

Walking into the city, they took the surroundings in as they went, now each equipped with an assortment of knives, mostly kitchen, covered in his blood to throw at her, looking for that one lucky strike.

"Witches, truly the most dangerous creature on this planet," said Finn, looking at the devastation around him.

The closer they got, the worse it became, from building ruins, streets, and cars, to obstacles of magical destruction.

Avoiding the fires, they trekked over cooling lava fissures and frozen earth as they made their way to the center of the city, where they heard the latest explosion.

When a cat with extra legs and multiple eyes hissed at them and limped away, Finn knew things had gotten way out of control.

Too much magic clashing in one spot was never a good thing.

"Don't touch anything," Finn warned when they came across distorted anomalies, strange plants, and other weird, unexplainable things warped by magic.

"Wasn't planning to," said Sage, stepping around a glowing purple plant that was dripping some unknown brown liquid that sizzled on the ground below, releasing yellowish fumes.

"You can't win!" shouted Bonnie tauntingly in the distance.

"No, I can't lose!" Davina retorted, accompanied by another round of explosions and what sounded like lasers.

Looking at Sage, Finn put a finger to his lips, and with a nod from her, they snuck their way over.

Peeking around a corner, they spotted them. Davina was sending what looked like elemental birds dive bombing Bonnie, who was firing varying magical bolts back as they ran and jumped at speeds not inferior to that of vampires, and in some cases better, as they went from roof to roof, and sometimes street and back, just shy of flying.

Impressed, Finn and Sage had to quickly step back as one of the buildings they were in between was hit by a red bolt, vaporizing part of it, causing furniture and other things inside to fall out.

"Okay, this might not be easy, but if we time it right, we may get lucky, so I'll take one side, you take the other, and the key is to wait for the moment she gets hit and her defense is weakened momentarily, got it?" said Finn.

"I don't like this Finn. What if that red magic hit us? Would we even survive that?" asked Sage worriedly

Finn frowned, "That's why we have to help Davina, and don't forget you have the amulet now, it'll take more than one of those to harm you."

"And what about you? Are you sure your blood can handle something like that hitting you?" asked Sage.

"I'll be fine," said Finn, not convincing at all.

"Are you sure? Is she worth the risk?" asked an exasperated Sage, though what she really meant to ask was if she was worth more than me?

"If she weren't here, that would be us fighting Bonnie. Do you think we could have survived without her?" Finn responded sedately.

Sage sighed, "Damn you, I know you're right, but I'm afraid I'll lose you again."

"Don't think like that. We're not fighting, we're harassing. We won't stay past our welcome. We can do this," said Finn, bringing her in for a hug.

"Mn," Sage hummed agreeably, wrapping her arms around him.

Going in for a kiss, they dive away as the building is hit a second time by an icy, fiery explosion, walls crumbling around them.

"That's our cue," Finn chuckled, settling for a quick peck goodbye, and they reluctantly separated to get in position, though it wasn't going to be easy even keeping up with them.

Then came their moment.

Davina just jumped away from a roof that turned into a giant Venus flytrap when a stray bolt caught her mid-flight, causing her to crash through a top-story window with a fireball following her in, exploding, taking out multiple floors.

Bonnie, hopping to the nearby roof, looked down at the smoking debris, fireball in hand. Waving the smoke away, she looked for any sign of movement before chucking a couple more for good measure, leveling the entire building.

Frowning, she cast a quick chant and spun in time to see Davina on the roof just behind, grinning at her, pointing up, before a massive ball of concrete smashed into her from above, destroying the building she was in and everything inside, burying her beneath it all.

An exhausted Bonnie willed herself free, blowing the rubble off her as she stood up dripping with sweat, wiping the blood from her nose, looking terrible compared to Davina, who, while similarly tired, still looked ready to go another couple of rounds.

Suddenly, multiple knives flew from each direction in rapid fire, the first two hitting her in the side and shoulder. Bonnie quickly reapplied her shields, causing the rest to bounce harmlessly away.

Pulling them out with an angry groan, she glared defiantly at Davina, who was completely clueless as to what was going on.

Then came Finn, speeding towards her, knives in hand, looking to put her down for good, while Sage continued her assault from the shadows.

"You," Bonnie growled, spotting him.

Distracted by Finn, Davina watched as Bonnie turned to confront him, willing the earth to her defense before being hit in the backside by a knife from Sage, shields down.

Sending a wave of earth to sweep Finn away, Bonnie spun around furiously, hands out. Her anger soon turned to confusion as nothing came. Magic that once flowed so freely through her was now just out of reach.

"What's happening?" Bonnie couldn't help but ask as she dropped to a knee, feeling weak.

Seizing her chance, Davina showed no mercy, using the quickest, deadliest spell one could, blowing a hole right through Bonnie with a simple magical blast as the last of the great witches from Mystic Falls dropped dead.

Jumping down, she joined Finn and Sage, saying, "You know I had that, don't you?" Davina said somewhat indignantly.

"Of course we do, but I'm not one to take unnecessary risks with the people I care about," said Finn, putting her at ease.

"As long as you know," Davina snorted.

Standing over Bonnie's corpse, Finn put an arm around both their shoulders, giving them an affectionate squeeze and a peck each on their temples, "Thank you, ladies, you've both done wonderfully, I couldn't have done it without you."

Davina smiled, pleased to have been appreciated, as did Sage.

"What now?" asked Davina.

"The big covens would have likely felt this. We should leave," said Sage.

"Or, set a trap," offered Davina.

"No, Sage is right, we're not ready for that yet, and besides, I still have unfinished business," said Finn, thinking of Klaus and Elijah.

"And here, we'll need these; it'll help with what's to come," said Finn, bending over and extracting the Tiara, compass, and Paragon Diamond to help with their future endeavors.

...

Later in the warehouse that began it all, Finn now had Elijah and Klaus strung up over their respective meat grinders.

"Hello, ladies, time to see how much punishment our Original bodies can really take," said Finn, pulling the lever, their curses and cries music to his ears.

Their torture would be the stuff of legends before they finally bite the dust.
