Chapter 659 - The Honeymoon 18: The Second Epoch Cycle Details

A crimson fracture tore open before Veneri's eyes until a massive holographic interface stabilized in midair. It was not the neutral sapphire blue of his usual System notifications. It was blood-red. The letters pulsed faintly, as if written in coagulated light.

"This one is different."

-------

[SECOND EPOCH CYCLE]

[Long ago, when the Founder of Civilizations —Vasreveilder Nov Aeteria—offered his existence to protect the Hidden Citadel from collapse, the Eight Renaistus of the Eight Realms witnessed something they could not deny: they were mortal.

They and their people had come from another world. Unlike the Spheraphasians, whose lifespans were centuries, the Renaistus and their bloodlines were finite.

And for beings who ruled civilizations carved into reality itself, mortality was unacceptable.

They searched for permanence and discovered one truth. They had to ascend.

Unlike the natives of this world, the Renaistus were not bound by the Ascension Curse. Their descendants were not shackled to begin again from the Essentia Rank. They inherited strength and continuity. But they were still mortal.

And so began millennia of singular obsession. Dozens of thousands of years passed. Bloodlines refined themselves like weapons forged repeatedly in flame. And one by one, the Renaistus reached Divinity.

And currently, all reigning Renaistus of the Eight Hidden Realms have attained the Sixth Enlightenment of the Divine Rank.]

The crimson interface shifted again. The narrative ended and directives began.

Veneri sat close to the campfire there for a long moment after the crimson hologram vanished, staring at the empty air where the Second Epoch Cycle had just been elaborated. He inhaled slowly, then exhaled through his nose.

The Second Epoch Cycle was a convergence mechanism designed to compress history into a narrower path by forcing Dynasties, Krepsunas and Transmigrators into direct conflict until only those aligned with the predetermined future remained. The Eight Renaistus, who had spent tens of thousands of years clawing their way into the Sixth Enlightenment of the Divine Rank out of sheer fear of mortality, were now part of it.

And then there was him.

He exhaled again and rubbed the back of his neck, glancing at the egg in Asenane's hands before looking away, because even that ridiculous situation somehow felt secondary compared to the role he had just been assigned.

Every time a member of Sentina Erideae approached a remnant of their Timeskipping Event, every time they stepped too close to the spatial node where their past selves altered causality, he would be summoned. His System would alert him. He would go, he would stand there and would endure the strain that would otherwise tear them apart from the inside. The realization feedback, the memory collision, the soul fracture, all of it would redirect into him instead of them.

It would hurt. That part was not negotiable. Each intervention would stack something inside him. Natas had not elaborated on what "the consequences" were, but Veneri was not naive. The Split of Time was already a paradoxical existence. This role would push that further. If he absorbed enough strain, he might stop experiencing events in sequence. He might begin seeing outcomes before causes more frequently.

If he refused, they died.

If the Second Epoch Cycle was trying to eliminate them prematurely, it meant their survival was required for something larger. And if something larger required them alive, then his role in keeping them alive was also predetermined. He almost smiled at that.

'Necessary suffering.'

What a charming phrase..

Natas' involvement complicated things but not in a way that destabilized his resolve. He did not trust Natas but he trusted the logic of Natas' position. As the Omniscient of History, Natas functioned within constraints. He saw past, present and branching futures, but he did not override things arbitrarily. If he assigned Veneri this role, it meant the timeline required a stabilizer. It also meant that somewhere within the predetermined outcomes, Veneri's suffering produced a favorable end state.

There was always a reward for his suffering. It was not necessarily in the form of relics or chalices, though those were now in play as well, but in outcome distribution. Natas ensured both sides extracted something of value from the chaos. He did get Arletta from the Timeskipping Event and she's one of his most powerful subordinates.

Which meant this pain would not be meaningless.

The Chalice of Godhood hovered in the back of his mind as a secondary variable.

It led to immediate Deity ascension for those at Sixth or Seventh Enlightenment. Whoever consumed it would bypass the natural ascension trial and leap into divinity but that also meant skipping the tempering process.

Unrefined godhood was volatile. The fact that access to the Third Epoch Cycle was tied to this quest meant that the Second was a filter, and the Third would not be survivable for those who had not hardened themselves through the crucible.

'So I stabilize paradox nodes, prevent premature annihilation of Nine Event carriers, navigate divine war politics, possibly intervene in a confrontation with Virathus and try not to dissolve into a temporal anomaly along the way.'

When summarized like that, it sounded almost reasonable.

He felt the familiar calm settle over him fully now.

He glanced back at Asenane briefly. She was worried because she understood the cost. She saw the cumulative nature of what he was agreeing to. She saw the possibility that saving everyone else would gradually pull him further away from them. That was valid. That fear was not irrational and even he had to admit that.

But she also knew he would not choose differently.

If the Second Epoch Cycle was a crucible, then he would stand inside it willingly. If it was a purge, then he would decide what was allowed to be erased. And if enduring existential pain was the price of ensuring that Sentina Erideae reached the Nine Events intact, then that price was acceptable.

He had endured worse. Or at least, he was confident he would.

It was about timing and he, of all beings, understood timing better than anyone.
