In the man's hand, it was not a gun he held, but a small remote control, seemingly controlling their fate.
"Don't move!" The man's voice grew harsher, his eyes probing, staring at them all with a deadly resolve. Carefully, the man placed the child on the ground, then tore away the black cloth covering the girl's head. Behind the cloth, the tear-streaked face of a little girl was clearly visible.
The girl's mouth was taped shut, her eyes filled with fear pleading with them, as if she was begging for someone to save her from this terrifying situation.
"Soo Yung!!" Lee stepped forward with a broken heart, but his steps halted when the man shook the remote control in his hand, threatening them all with an explosion that could happen at any moment.
Once the black cloth was removed, it was not just the girl's face that was revealed. On the girl's body, a vest filled with explosives was strapped on, and around her body, a horrifying circle of bombs was attached.
"Don't move, or we will all die together!" The man's voice grew hoarse, but his threatening tone remained firm, "This is a bomb that can be controlled remotely. As long as I hold this button, the bomb will explode..."
"Soo Yung is only eleven years old!" Lee's eyes began to redden, Les's anger boiling over. "How could you be so cruel as to send such a small child to die?! Right now, put down the remote control, and we will let you go safely!"
"Bah, Hong Kong Island police, I don't trust you!" The man in the black suit's voice trembled, but he remained insistent, "Let me go right now, and don't follow me, or you, this child, and everyone in this building will be buried with me!"
"You..." Lee's roar was just escaping his throat when suddenly a loud gunshot rang in Lee's ears.
Wow!
Boom!!!
The sound of the explosion shook the entire building, making the floor tremble violently.
"Damn!!!" Carter and Lee fell to the ground, their bodies thrown by the blast. They lay still for a moment, waiting for the bitter reality they had to face. However, after a few seconds, they realized they were still alive.
"How long are you going to lie there?" Lance's voice sounded from a distance.
Lee and Carter exchanged glances, confused. They quickly got up, looking around, but no changes were visible. They both stared at the man in the black suit who now lay with a shattered head, and Soo Yung, who slumped beside the man's body, as if she had run out of energy.
"What is happening?" Lee asked, his voice filled with confusion.
"Didn't the bomb explode?" Carter asked as well, his eyes sweeping the room that seemed unchanged.
Lance pursed his lips and pointed out the window with a cold expression, "You're in your thirties and still suffering from Alzheimer's? The bomb clearly went off outside, look."
"Ah?" Lee and Carter turned simultaneously, confused, then directed their gaze outside the window.
In the night sky, flames soared high, smoke billowed rapidly, and the sound of sirens began to be heard. They saw flashes of fire coming from the direction of South Broadway.
Carter clicked his tongue, "That's South Broadway."
"The kidnappers used the ransom as a trap!" Lee murmured gratefully, quickly running over to Soo Yung. Lee hugged the little girl, trying to calm her, "Soo Yung, it's okay, it's okay."
"Hi, I'm LAPD Carter, and this is Lee, my partner!" Carter kicked the remote control lying next to the little girl's body, then approached with an awkward smile, "I'll take you to meet your dad later, but before that, we need to get this vest off..."
"NO, NO!" Soo Yung trembled violently, her voice filled with fear, "You can't touch this vest! They said it would explode if you take it off!"
Lee's movements froze instantly. A deep fear enveloped Lee. Carefully, he raised his hands, not daring to touch anything around the vest.
"Then don't try to take it off and stay quiet here." Carter scratched his increasingly haggard face, then pulled out his cellphone, "Wait a moment, I'll call a bomb squad."
"No need." Lance also took out his phone, his voice sounding firm and confident.
Lee's eyes lit up upon hearing Lance's question: "Mr. Lance, do you have a way to defuse the bomb?"
Lance shook his head, Lee's expression flat. "No, but there's someone who can do it." Lance quickly dialed Tony's number. Of course, this kind of thing was Iron Man's absolute expertise—just like flipping a hand for Tony.
Rather than waiting for another bomb expert to take risks, Lance preferred to hand this problem over to someone who was already accustomed to dealing with such matters.
After a few seconds, Tony's impatient voice came through clearly on the phone: "Hey, don't call me unless it's urgent! I'm busy rewriting the genetic formula for your girlfriend. If something goes wrong because of your interruption, don't blame me!"
Lance merely snorted, clearly uninterested in Tony's complaints. Without further ado, Lance switched his phone to visual mode, pointing the camera at Soo Yung, who was still bound with the bomb vest. "This is the kidnapped little girl. She's here with a vest full of bombs. There's a mechanism inside the vest that will explode if we try to take it off. Is there a way to defuse the bomb?"
On the other end, Tony began to show a more serious expression. "Zoom in with the camera, I need to see the wiring more clearly."
Lance nodded and followed Tony's instructions, slowly bringing the phone camera closer to capture the details of the wires attached around the vest. Lance rotated the phone, carefully circling the bomb to show every inch of its mechanism.
After a few tense seconds, Tony's voice came through again, this time more assured. "Okay, cut the green wire."
Lance raised an eyebrow, looking hesitant. "Are you sure?"
