Chapter 115 - Chapter 115 - Do you still believe?

On the highway, a dusty black medium sized semi truck is currently speeding towards Atlanta City.

"Damn, it's cold."

Even with the heater on and covered in a winter jacket, Glenn still felt the coldness of the chilling climate.

"You know, I still think it would have been better to stay put and help with the preparation for our raid in the next three days." Glenn turned towards Michael sitting on the passenger seat.

"Since we're going to do that, then the more that we should do this. We need all the supplies we need." Michael reasoned, but from the slight smirk on his face. It seems there were more to this supply run than what he's letting them on.

While driving, Daryl glanced at him from the corner of his eyes and saw the smirk on his face.

'He always does that when he's planning on doing something stupid. It seems this won't just be a simple supply run in the end.'

Even with that realization in mind, Daryl wasn't even worried since danger is already second nature to him. He's that kind of person who feels more at home with walkers in the woods than he does inside the safe-zone.

Glenn groaned in amusement. "Oh come on, we don't even have a freaking doctor. What would we need a lot of medical supplies or tools for if there's no one among us who knows how to put them to use? I'm sure there's many out there who'd need the extra medical supplies."

It was Michael's turn to chuckle in a somewhat mocking tone. "Yeah, and leave it to the Governor and his people or whoever potentially dangerous people out there? I'm not willing to wager our survival for that ounce of compassion I have left or what you're feeling. We're gonna take and hoard every supply out there that's useful for our survival and a chance at comfortable life."

"..."

Glenn suddenly didn't know what to say after what Michael said. Daryl just continued driving in silence, while Nolan felt uncomfortable because of it.

"Also, we do have a doctor. It's Hershel."

Glenn closed his eyes and took a breath before responding softly. "He's a freaking..farm doctor."

"Uhh..they're actually called a veterinarian." Nolan suddenly remarked.

Glenn opened his eyes and quickly snapped at him in annoyance. "Shut up. They meant the same thing."

"No, they're not."

Smack!

Annoyed, Glenn smacked Nolan's leg with the back of his hand while clicking his tongue.

Hearing the commotion behind them, Michael chuckled while lightly shaking his head. He pulled out a piece of paper from his chest pocket and then handed it to Glenn.

"What's this?" Glenn asked while taking the paper. He unfolded it and saw a list of items along with a level of priority written beside the names.

Misoprostol or Pitocin - Critical

Obstetric (OB) Kit - Critical

…Silver Nitrate or Erythromycin Ointment - High

Vitamin K Injections - High

Fetal Doppler - Medium

Glenn wasn't sure what the things were listed at first, but when his eyes landed on the word "Fetal". Though still not sure, he somewhat realized what the items were for.

"Are..are these things for child birth?" Glenn asked in a hesitant tone.

Michael didn't bother looking back and kept his eyes on the road. "Yeah, that's why we're heading to the city. While this global outbreak hasn't gone long yet, we need to grab this window when most of those things are still inside hospitals or medical centers. Other survivors are bound to realize their importance once a woman in their group gets pregnant. After all, walkers will never..be able to hinder the urge when a man wants to reproduce. Since it didn't stop you from making one."

He chuckled at the end of it, which Glenn quickly defended himself.

"Come on, man. It was my first time alright? Especially doing it with such an attractive woman. I guess, I just did it out of instinct. So how would I know that one mistake would result in her getting pregnant. What about you Daryl? Mady always hovers around you like a fly. Have you made your moves on her yet?"

Then from out of nowhere, Glenn took this chance to toss the hot potato to Daryl.

"Wait a second, I thought it was Carol doing the hovering? I always see her talking to Daryl or giving him things to eat?" Nolan remarked from the side while listening to them.

Michael smirks and turns to look at Daryl. "Ain't you popular?"

Daryl clicked his tongue and replied. "Nothing's going on between me and of neither of the two, alright? We're just friends."

"Friend with benefits?" Michael laughed.

While Michael tried to tease him, a small voice that made them awfully quiet suddenly interrupted them.

"But..I saw Mady coming back from your room at the guard's tower though. She looked particularly disheveled and weirdly happy when we encountered each other." Nolan didn't even realize it, but his casual remark made Daryl blush in embarrassment.

"Man, shut up will ya? Why were you even up at such a late hour? " Daryl responded in annoyance.

"Went to pee, then decided to unwind."

Michael laughed and said. "What's wrong with getting laid? It's God's gift for humans to reproduce. I just didn't expect you'd prefer someone with meat though."

' I'm really not expecting him to get laid though. Hmm..that Mady must be exceptionally forward if she managed to take down Daryl. Dude's got the willpower of a boulder.'

Hearing a word that quickly caught his attention, Nolan cautiously asked. "Uhmm..do you still believe in God?"

With a question obviously aimed at him, Michael took a moment before he calmly responded. "Even if the world had already become like this, I still do. God works in mysterious ways that we'll never be able to understand, and with what is happening in our world today. A lot of people out there must have started to hate Him and those once pious believers of His must have started having doubts too. But it doesn't matter if you believe in Him or not. He loves us you know, he gave us everything we need to live freely in this world. We have free will to make our own choices even if he does not like whatever we're doing with this gift. It's just that humans are quick to blame God when something goes wrong, because it's easier to do so than admitting they're the one at fault. Maybe He's even watching everything unfolding right now, like how a father watches their children do something stupid, but still let them do so. So that they can realize how stupid and dangerous it is and won't do it the second time, and for us become better than our past selves from the lessons we learn along the way."

"..."

It was eerily quiet. The three men took a moment to digest the words they heard.

"Man, that's deep. My parents are Christians, me on the other hand. I'm not even sure myself at this point. I still wonder if they're still alive out there." Nolan silently gazed at the passing scenery through the window, reminiscing memories of the past.

Daryl quietly drove while deep in his thoughts, and Glenn just let out a sigh and closed his eyes to rest.

The earlier playful atmosphere from before disappeared and silence reigned as the semi truck is slowly inching closer to the city proper of Atlanta.
