Jamal stared at Dawn, not sure how to feel or react.
A part of him was very happy to see them. That he could not deny. But the other part of him was wondering what she was up to.
He'd told her clearly that they needed a break.
He needed a break.
Why was she here?
Dawn held his gaze, taking note of how exhausted and sad he looked.
She'd had asked Lucy to send someone over to pick up the car so that when Jamal got home he wouldn't see the car parked in front of the house and know they were inside.
"You look exhausted. First go in to freshen up and then we can have dinner," Dawn said after a while when he didn't say a word.
Jamal looked down at Josh with a smile, then crouched. "How are you, buddy? How was school today?"
Josh's arms went around Jamal's neck. "I'm fine. I missed you so much."
"I missed you, too," Jamal said, ruffling his hair. "I'll freshen up quickly, and then you can tell me all about your new friends at school."
Josh nodded.
