At the hospital, the ICU was in chaos.
"Doctor, temperature is forty point three!" An intern announced.
"Bring in another cold saline compress, now!" Carlton ordered.
"Her blood pressure is dropping." Someone says.
"Prepare the antipyretic, and increase the IV flow." Carlton says to a nurse.
Ella lay unconscious on the hospital bed, her body burning with fever. Her skin was flushed a frightening crimson, damp with sweat despite the cooling blankets layered over her. The monitor beside her shrieked relentlessly, each beep ratcheting Alexander's anxiety even higher.
Carlton moved around the room, issuing orders without hesitation. He knew losing Ella would ruin Alexander. Although he had never met Ella, he had heard about her.
"Get me her latest blood work. We need to rule out sepsis." He told the head nurse who nodded and quickly went to take Ella's blood sample.
Carlton glanced at another staff, "Push in another dose of antipyretics."
