It wasn't the first time Sera had joined the troop to hunt monsters at the borders of Lysanthia. Because of the unfavorable weather in Lysanthia, growing crops was almost impossible. The duchy's survival depended on two things: the magically-heated greenhouses that grew hardy root vegetables, and getting mana cores from the monsters they hunt.
In the past, residents of Lysanthia only killed monsters to protect their lands and families. They didn't hunt for sustenance, but for survival. Lysanthia was known as a frozen wasteland many centuries ago, where high-profile criminals who could not be contained at the Tower of Eternal Penance were sent.
Still, when Sera's ancestor discovered that the mana cores from the slain beasts could be a good source of mana, they started collecting it so they could trade it with other cities and nations for goods. Even the magic tower had become their usual patrons for the mana cores.
