Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: The Script of Seduction

The "Genesis Project" didn't just film a show; it manufactured a reality. The studio was a labyrinth of black cables, towering jib cameras, and a lighting rig so vast it felt like a second, synthetic sky. For the sixty contestants gathered in the wings, the air was thick with the smell of hairspray and nervous sweat.

Shanshan stood in the shadows of the stage left entrance, her fingers trembling as she clutched a vintage-style microphone. This was the "Evaluation Round." One song to determine their rank. One song to prove they weren't just filler for the background shots.

"You're up next, 402," a floor manager barked, checking a clipboard. "Remember the brief, Shanshan. Look at Judge Lu. Not the camera, not the audience. Him. Give the editors what they need."

Shanshan swallowed hard. Her manager, Mr. Tan, was standing near the craft services table, tapping his watch. Sixty thousand, she reminded herself. The ventilator. The heart monitor. The price of a life.

Across the stage, she saw Meilin. The heiress was sitting in the "Royal Tier," a section of plush gold seating reserved for the top-ranked legacy contestants. Meilin looked bored, her chin resting on a gloved hand, her gaze fixed on the stage with a detached, clinical interest. But as Shanshan stepped into the spotlight, Meilin's posture shifted. She sat up straighter, her eyes narrowing.

The music began—a haunting, stripped-back arrangement of a classic ballad about unrequited love.

Shanshan opened her mouth, and the studio went silent.

Her voice wasn't just a sound; it was an ache. It was the sound of a girl who had spent seventeen years apologizing for existing. It was raw, velvety, and carried a technical precision that shouldn't have been possible for someone without formal training.

As she sang, she forced herself to look at the center of the judging panel.

Lu Yan was leaning back, his white blazer open, a smirk playing on his lips. He wasn't listening to the music; he was devouring the performer. Shanshan felt a wave of nausea, but she leaned into the "script." She walked toward the edge of the stage, her eyes "yearning," her hand reaching out as if searching for a savior in the front row.

From the Royal Tier, Meilin felt a sharp, unexpected pang in her chest. It wasn't jealousy—it was recognition. She watched Shanshan's "performance" and saw the invisible strings pulling the girl's limbs. She saw the way Shanshan's eyes flickered toward the exit every time she blinked.

She's being forced, Meilin realized. Just like I was forced into this dress.

The song ended on a high, fragile note that seemed to hang in the air long after the music stopped. The audience erupted, but the judges remained silent for a beat too long.

"Pathetic," Linna whispered from the seat behind Meilin. "Look at her throwing herself at Lu Yan. She's practically begging for a scandal."

Lu Yan stood up, clapping slowly. "Breath-taking," he said, his voice amplified by the house speakers. "Such passion. It's rare to find an Omega who understands... desire so well. Come here, Shanshan."

Shanshan hesitated, then walked to the edge of the judging table.

"You're a little rough around the edges," Lu Yan said, leaning over the table until he was inches from her face. He reached out, his thumb brushing the corner of her lip—a move that was completely inappropriate for a judge, yet perfect for a viral clip. "But I think with the right... mentorship... you could be a star."

The cameras zoomed in. In the control room, the producers were likely cheering. This was the shot. The "vixen" and the "hero."

Meilin watched as Shanshan stood there, frozen, unable to pull away from Lu Yan's touch without risking her position on the show. The heiress felt a sudden, hot flash of rage. Not at Shanshan, but at the predictable, disgusting machinery of it all.

"Judge Lu," Meilin's voice cut through the applause. It wasn't loud, but it carried the weight of her family's billions.

The cameras swung toward the Royal Tier.

"Yes, Meilin?" Lu Yan asked, his eyes dancing with malice.

"The evaluation is for vocal stability and stage presence," Meilin said, standing up. Her blue sapphires caught the light, making her look like an avenging deity. "Not for... physical inspections. If you're finished admiring the 'merchandise,' perhaps we can move on to the scoring. Some of us value our time."

The room gasped. It was the first "clash" of the season. The Ice Queen vs. the Superstar.

Lu Yan's jaw tightened. He pulled his hand back, his smile turning razor-thin. "Always so focused on the rules, darling. Very well. Score: S-Rank for vocals. D-Rank for... temperament."

Shanshan bowed, her face burning with shame. As she hurried off the stage, she had to pass the Royal Tier to get to the lockers.

Meilin was waiting by the stairs, ostensibly waiting for her own turn to be miked up. As Shanshan passed, Meilin stepped into her path.

"You're playing a dangerous game," Meilin whispered, her voice so low only Shanshan could hear. "He isn't a ladder, Shanshan. He's a trapdoor."

Shanshan looked up, her eyes bright with unshed tears. "You think I don't know that? You think I want his hand on my face?"

Meilin paused. The coldness in her eyes wavered for a fraction of a second. "Then why do it? You have the best voice in this room. You don't need the theatrics."

"Because my 'best' isn't enough to pay for a life," Shanshan snapped, her voice trembling. "Not everyone has a father who buys them the crown before the pageant even starts, Miss Li."

She brushed past Meilin, her white tulle skirt snagging momentarily on the gold railing.

Meilin stood there, stunned. For the first time in her life, someone had looked at her and seen a spoiled child instead of a victim. She looked down at her gloved hands. She wanted to tell Shanshan that her father didn't buy her crowns—he bought her cages. She wanted to tell her that she was being sold to the man Shanshan was "clinging" to.

But the red "ON AIR" light began to flash.

"Next contestant: Meilin Li!" the announcer shouted.

Meilin walked onto the stage. She moved like a machine, her performance perfect, her notes hitting with the precision of a diamond drill. But as she looked out into the dark auditorium, she didn't look at Lu Yan. She looked at the shadows where the lower-ranked contestants sat.

She found Shanshan's eyes in the dark.

The misunderstanding was set. To the world, Shanshan was the interloper trying to steal a prince. To Shanshan, Meilin was the tyrant who had everything.

And in the center of it all, Lu Yan watched them both, a hunter watching two beautiful birds flutter against the bars of the cage he had built for them.

The episode wrapped, but as the lights dimmed, the first "leaked" clip was already hitting the internet: Shanshan's Seductive Song: Does the Heiress Have Competition?

The fire had been lit. And neither of them realized they were the fuel.
