Chapter 433 - Chapter 432: Paul VS Wally (Part 1)

Name: Wally

Age: 16

Honors: Runner-up of the Verdanturf Conference, Champion of the Hoenn Breeding Tournament, Semifinalist in Pokémon Contests, Conqueror of Kanto's Battle Frontier

Pokémon Team: Gallade, Garchomp, Altaria, Delcatty, Roserade, Magnezone, Talonflame, Azumarill, Flygon, Gardevoir, Cacturne, Aegislash.

This is Wally's profile.

After conquering the Kanto Battle Frontier, Wally chose to continue his journey in the Kalos region. Apart from obtaining his Aegislash, his most notable accomplishment there was ascending the Battle Castle, defeating every challenger and advancing his noble rank from Baron all the way to Grand Duke.

During that period, he also achieved the remarkable feat of defeating members of the Kalos Elite Four: Wikstrom and Siebold, who had personally visited the facility.

When he returned to Hoenn, rumors spread that Wally challenged Champion May. Unfortunately, he was defeated.

Still, even from this brief dossier, May's role in his career is… intriguing.

Wally's ability is clearly at Champion level. But as long as May stands above him, Wally is fated never to wear the crown of Hoenn.

The same can be said for Alain of Kalos.

As a protagonist of the Pokémon Adventures manga and a key rival in the anime, Alain's accolades are already illustrious—fighting alongside Steven Stone against Team Flare, defeating Ash Ketchum to win a regional League, and competing in the Masters Eight. At his peak, Alain's power unquestionably rivaled that of a Champion.

In this world, Alain is even stronger—arguably no weaker than Diantha. In the anime canon, he might well have been the strongest Trainer alive. But here, Calem overshadows him completely.

The only real exceptions are Paul and Lucas.

Even then, Lucas' strength should not be underestimated. The only reason he has not yet secured a place in the Masters Eight is because Paul had once taken crucial points off him, leaving him just short of qualifying.

And now, for this upcoming ranked battle—once again held in Veilstone City, it was not Paul who sought out Wally, but Wally who appeared at Paul's doorstep before the match even began.

Paul had just finished trimming Torterra's shell branches when he heard a voice not far away.

Turning, he saw Wally in animated conversation with Reggie, notebook in hand, his eyes burning with curiosity.

"There you are. Paul's right here." Reggie said, pointing.

"Paul! It's been a while. Your Pokémon raising is really impressive, your Torterra looks even sturdier in person than in the videos!"

Wally jogged up cheerfully and greeted Paul, eyes widening as he spotted Torterra sunbathing nearby.

"Tor-terra~"

At Paul's signal, Torterra gave a good-natured smile and released a sphere of green life energy that drifted into Wally's body.

"Ahh… I feel so warm and strong. This is incredible…"

Born frail, Wally relished the invigorating touch of Torterra's Life Force.

"The match isn't until tomorrow. Why are you here today?" Paul asked.

Normally, this would be the time to squeeze in last-minute training—or at least prepare a strategy against him. Was Wally here to scout?

"The Veilstone Breeding House is world-famous, it's run by the family of Sinnoh's Champion. No way I'd miss the chance to visit and learn a few things."

Paul frowned slightly at his straightforwardness.

Wally nodded, then shook his head. "I've learned a lot… but there's still something missing."

"What's missing?" Paul asked, curious. His brother was among the best Breeders alive. What could Wally not learn from him?

"What I really want to study," Wally said earnestly, "is how to pair Pokémon to produce the next generation with exceptional natural talent."

Reggie sighed, clearly weary of this topic. "That's difficult. Better to focus on raising Pokémon well than trying to breed 'perfect' ones."

Paul understood instantly. He recalled Wally's other nickname in the games—the Egg Master.

In-game, Wally is obsessed with hatching eggs, breeding for ideal stats and moves.

But this was reality. There was no simplified game mechanic here. Breeding for outstanding potential was like trying to develop new hybrid rice—it took immense time, and results were wildly inconsistent.

Even the strongest parents could hatch offspring weaker than themselves. The saying "a tiger father may still have a dog son" was painfully true.

And in reality, forcing Pokémon to breed purely for human goals bordered on unethical.

"Breeding may be hard, but I'll keep learning and pushing forward." Wally replied without hesitation.

Paul said nothing further, letting his gaze drift to the Pokémon scattered across the training field.

"Paul, have you thought about who you'll challenge in the Masters Eight rotation?" Wally asked suddenly.

In the new rotation system, challengers could face any of the Masters Eight—except the current Monarch. If victorious, they would claim that spot.

"I'll probably go for the most interesting one."

"The most… interesting?" Wally frowned, unable to guess who he meant. Still, he shared what intel he had:

"As far as I know, every current Master has at least one Legendary or Mythical Pokémon. We don't know all the details yet, but defeating any of them will be incredibly difficult."

Paul's lips curved. "That just makes it more exciting."

The stronger the opponent, the more alive he felt. If they were only at ordinary Champion level, his Masters Eight journey would feel like little more than a formality.

"…Right, I almost forgot—you've got Mewtwo." Wally sighed. One by one, everyone in this league seemed to have access to terrifyingly powerful Pokémon. He had one himself, but compared to those monsters, it still felt lacking…

No matter. Tomorrow, he would give everything he had.

...

Time flew. The next day arrived in the blink of an eye.

The Veilstone Arena was as packed as ever, with every seat filled. And on one side of the battlefield stood Paul, once again ready to battle.

"Today's match is between Wally, the prodigy Breeder and Trainer from Hoenn who once conquered the Kanto Battle Frontier, and his opponent, our reigning Champion—Paul!"

"The rules are three-on-three. Both Trainers may switch Pokémon freely. Victory goes to whichever side incapacitates all of the opponent's Pokémon. Let's look forward to an incredible battle!"

As the announcer's voice fell silent, the referee signaled for the Trainers to send out their Pokémon.

"I'll fight with everything I've got, Paul. I want to see how far the gap between us really is."

Paul nodded once. "Then show me."

Their eyes locked, and they hurled their Poké Balls in unison.

"Gallade, prepare to battle!"

"Samurott, battle ready!"

Twin flashes of light burst open. The valiant warrior Gallade squared off against the aloof swordsman Samurott.

Even before the first move was made, the atmosphere bristled with tension—like drawn blades waiting to strike.

"Give it everything, Gallade—Mega Evolution!"

"Gaaaal!!"

As Wally gripped the Mega Necklace at his chest, Gallade was bathed in the light of Mega Evolution. His frame shifted, the sleek red blades on his arms sharpened to a deadly edge, and the cape-like appendages at his back flared in the wind—radiant, commanding, and undeniably heroic.

Mega Gallade—ready for battle!

"Dual Blades—Aqua Dark Slash!"

Even before the glow had faded, Hisuian Samurott who had been waiting like a coiled shadow, burst forward. With one azure blade and one black, the twin seamitars drove straight for Mega Gallade's vitals.

"Teleport!"

Gallade wasted no time. Sensing he couldn't withstand the incoming strike head-on, he vanished instantly from the spot, reappearing at a safe distance. Crossing his glowing arm blades, he unleashed a flurry of Psycho Cuts, slicing through the air toward Samurott.

"Use Rain Dance! Torrent, amplify!"

Hisuian Samurott didn't so much as twitch. A roaring current materialized around him, forming a shield that swept the Psycho Cuts aside. Enveloped in the water's flow, his power and speed surged rapidly.

He simply stood there, those piercing eyes locked on Gallade as if reading his every move, biding his time until the power boost was complete—when he could strike with a speed even Teleport could not outrun, and fell Gallade in a single blow.

"Taunt!"

At once, Gallade raised an arm and provoked his foe.

The effect was immediate, Samurott's strengthening ceased. But this was no ordinary opponent. Having survived battles under Ninetales' command and mastered the Rage Power, Samurott was not so easily thrown into reckless frenzy.

Instead, the Taunt only stoked his fury into lethal focus, awakening his Rage Form. His whole being became that of a relentless swordsman, blades thirsting for blood.

For most Pokémon, this presence alone would have been enough to paralyze them with fear. But Mega Gallade's Steadfast mind could not be shaken.

"Double Team—Leaf Blade!"

Gallade split into dozens of copies, each clone's blades glowing green as they converged from all directions.

But to his shock, despite the field swarming with illusions, Samurott's eyes never left the true Gallade. Not once did his gaze falter, not once did his head turn—even as the clones attacked first.

"Air Blade Strike!" Paul commanded.

Samurott immediately swung both seamitars, releasing a brand-new technique forged from fusing Air Slash, Aqua Cutter, and Sacred Sword into one.

A barrage of massive and terrifying blade auras tore through the battlefield, ripping toward Gallade.

"Detect!!"

Sensing disaster, Wally called out sharply. Gallade's instincts kicked in—narrowly slipping through the storm of sword auras, threading a path to survival.

But before he could exhale in relief, Samurott vanished.

A chill gust roared behind him—Gallade's alarm bells rang. He spun around instantly, crossing his blades to guard—

CLANG!!

The twin seamitars crashed down, caught on Gallade's armblades. But from below, a third strike came—an Aqua Cutter, vibrating at deadly frequency, thrusting upward.

SLASH!! BOOM!!

Gallade's guard faltered. Agonizing pain exploded through his body, his mind screaming—a critical hit!

Samurott did not relent. Exploiting the opening, he chained into his signature—Secret Blade: Thousandfold Wave. A relentless cascade of strikes poured down, every slash a precise critical, every impact scattering shards across the battlefield.

The field hazards compounded—Spikes effect, fully stacked!

At last, Samurott slid his blades back into their sheaths and turned away.

A second later, Gallade's eyes widened, then dimmed.

He collapsed, reverting from Mega form in a flash of white.

The referee raised a hand:

"Gallade is unable to battle! Samurott claims victory!"

"You've done enough. Rest well, Gallade."

Wally recalled his partner, his chest tight. Even in such a short clash, the pressure had been overwhelming. Gallade was one of his team's top three aces—yet Paul had felled him effortlessly, with a Pokémon that wasn't even his trump card.

So this was the weight Lucas had felt in his own match against Paul.

Steeling himself, Wally strapped on his Dynamax Band. Unlike in the games, he didn't need to recall and resend his Pokémon to activate it. Instead, he directly drew on the band's power, enlarging his second Poké Ball as he hurled it forward.

"Gardevoir—your turn!"

From the ball burst Gardevoir, elegant and radiant—only to immediately swell, expanding into her towering Gigantamax form, soaring several stories tall.

"She's huge… and dazzlingly white…"

Gasps swept the stadium. Many spectators, witnessing Gigantamax Gardevoir for the first time, stared in awe, and overwhelmed by her sheer beauty and imposing aura.

Yet, the moment her feet touched the ground, she winced—the Spikes detonating beneath her.

Samurott lunged without hesitation, unleashing another dual-blade combo that struck against the giant's form.

Thanks to her Gigantamax bulk, the blows missed her vitals, and Gardevoir endured.

"Max Starfall!!"

Raising her arms, Gardevoir radiated a brilliant pink aura. The harmless-looking light burst outward, crashing into Samurott—dealing massive, and super effective damage.

"It's super effective!"

"Air Blade Strike!"

Samurott steadied himself and sent another barrage of spectral blades tearing through the air.

With her immense Gigantamax size, dodging was impossible. But Gardevoir had no intention of dodging.

"Max Starfall!"

From a distance, she conjured a radiant full moon, hurling it at Samurott.

The blade auras shattered upon impact, purified by the lunar brilliance. Though the moon itself burst apart, the searing light washed over Samurott.

"Detect!"

Samurott countered instantly, channeling a surge of Dark Pulse through his maw to pierce the light, then slipping into the shadows of its glow. He lessened the damage, but couldn't avoid it entirely.

"Max Starfall!"

The third wave came immediately. Unlike before, Gardevoir released a full-field radiance, flooding the arena in moonlight so intense the protective barriers around the field activated automatically.

This time, Samurott had nowhere to run.

At the very last moment, his eyes hardened. He hurled both seamitars forward with all his might—before the pink brilliance swallowed him whole.

BOOM!!

When the light faded, Samurott lay unconscious, adrift in the sea of pink.

Across from him, Gardevoir too had collapsed, her Gigantamax form dissolving away.

The twin seamitars clattered to the ground, glinting sharp as ever.

"Both Gardevoir and Samurott are unable to battle! This round ends in a draw! Trainers, send out your next Pokémon!"

The referee's voice rang across the hushed arena.
