Chapter 273 - Chapter 273: Guardians of the Tree of Beginning — The Five Regis

Legendary Pokémon—divine beasts to some—are rare and extraordinary beings. Compared to ordinary Pokémon, their lower bounds far exceed the norm. But how high is that "lower bound," really?

For most Pokémon species under typical growth trajectories, adulthood might bring them to the Advanced or Veteran tier at best. Only through relentless training and perseverance can they hope to climb into the elite ranks.

But so-called Legendary Pokémon—as long as they reach maturity—can naturally attain Honor-class strength, or even unleash bursts of power rivaling or surpassing that level without extraordinary effort.

For them, reaching the Elite Four-class through diligent training isn't particularly difficult. And the Champion-class? It's not entirely out of reach, either.

Of course, the ceiling after that still exists—unless you're a being like Lugia or Groudon, even a Champion-tier Legendary hits the same kind of plateau as any ordinary Pokémon would.

Still... that's saying something.

At this very moment, the Regirock standing before them was of Elite Four class. Not overwhelmingly powerful by Legendary standards—but weak? Far from it.

As of now, Paul hadn't yet trained a single Pokémon to truly reach the Elite Four level.

And yet here was an Elite Four-level opponent—one of many. According to what Ash had relayed, there were at least five of them.

Why at least?

Because back in the outer zones of the Tree of Beginning, Ash and his Lucario had been relentlessly hunted down by five different Regis. Even if some were of the same species, the pace of the pursuit left no room for him to tell whether they were switching or if it was an entirely different set of Pokémon.

And within the Tree's inner sanctum, there were also at least five Champion-level Regis.

Five outside. Five inside. And both of those are just the known numbers. The actual total—whether it's ten or several dozen—remains a mystery.

"Metagross, you're up."

Though Electivire had been locked in a tense standoff with Regirock, Paul wasn't planning to send it in just yet.

His goals for coming to the Tree of Beginning were twofold: one, to recharge his Poké-gear; and two, to use the guardian Regis here as training partners for his team.

"Grroo~"

With a shimmering surge of magnetic force, Metagross burst into action, using Agility to speed forward before launching a powerful Meteor Mash toward Regirock.

A thunderous "WHAM!" echoed out—only for Regirock to counter with a brutal Hammer Arm, sending Metagross' gleaming silver body flying backward in an instant.

Fortunately, its body crackled with electromagnetic energy midair. Levitate-like magnetic forces pulsed from within, allowing it to stabilize and recover its form in the sky.

Metagross quickly recognized that its raw power simply wasn't in the same league as Regirock's. Opting for a more tactical approach, it began drawing on cosmic energy to engage in a battle of attrition.

Thankfully for Paul, Regirock had been dormant for so long that its cognition seemed dulled—it hadn't used Lock-On, a move that would've spelled certain defeat for Metagross had it been deployed.

Meanwhile, Electivire didn't step in to assist, nor did it complain that its opponent had been reassigned to Metagross. Because…

"Regi… Ice…"

"Regi… Steel…"

From atop the rocky cliffs flanking the ancient corridor, two Legendary Pokémon made their appearance. One was Regice, its entire body sculpted from glimmering ice crystals. The other, Registeel, had a sleek alloyed form with a rounded frame. The dot-matrix eyes on both their faces lit up with a steady crimson glow—clearly primed for battle.

"Vireee!"

Electivire didn't wait for its turn in the lineup. Anticipating possible threats, it leapt to the front, standing protectively in front of Paul—its body crackling with electricity as it psyched itself up for whatever might come.

"Ursaluna, Hisuian Samurott—prepare for battle!"

Without hesitation, Paul toss two Poké Balls forward, each bursting open with a brilliant flash as he issued swift and decisive commands.

"Ursaluna, take on Regice. Samurott, your target is Registeel."

"Ursaah!"

As soon as Ursaluna materialized on the field, it locked eyes with Regice. A flash of irritation glinted in its gaze—it hated looking up at other Pokémon.

With a thunderous stomp, Ursaluna summoned a surge of mysterious power from deep within. A crystalline blue stone pillar erupted from the ground beneath Regice, launching it high into the air and sending it tumbling from its perch atop the cliff.

Before Regice could recover from its hard landing, Ursaluna—already empowered by Belly Drum and driven by sheer will—charged in with Headlong Rush, its massive frame barreling into the fallen titan with bone-crushing force.

Wild Pokémon often lacked advanced combat instincts, and that included the ancient guardians of the Tree of Beginning. Creatures like Regice, though powerful, hadn't engaged in a real battle for centuries—if not millennia.

So when Ursaluna lunged in, Regice unable to clearly assess the situation, instinctively countered with Hammer Arm, raising both icy arms in a clumsy attempt to strike back.

A moment later—

BANG!

BOOM!

Regice was sent flying. The full force of Ursaluna's attack embedded the Legendary Pokémon deep into the mountainside.

Yes, Regice was an Elite-tier Legendary. But against an Ursaluna whose Attack was maxed out and reinforced by its Guts-fueled rage? There was no comparison.

Before Regice could pry itself free from the stone, Ursaluna slammed into it again with High Horsepower, forcing it even deeper into the rock face.

Then came the Hammer Arm—a relentless flurry of brutal blows.

Even though Regice managed to crawl out eventually, the momentum of the battle had already slipped away. Before it could unleash its true power, it was crushed—caught in a storm of constant suppression.

Its HP dropped like a waterfall.

Meanwhile on the other side of the battlefield, the freshly deployed Samurott surged into the sky with Aqua Jet, chaining it fluidly into a Razor Shell and following up with Wave Blade as it slashed toward Registeel.

Its momentum was impressive—until the next second, when Registeel retaliated with a devastating Heavy Slam sending Samurott flying. Just like Regice before it, the spectral fish was hurled into the mountainside, partially embedded in the rock.

Fortunately, these Legendary Titans weren't exactly known for their intelligence. Once Samurott managed to free itself—

—it used its superior speed to kite Registeel, and after boosting its power with Swords Dance, it was able to fight evenly, even gradually gaining the upper hand.

But that was only the beginning.

Before Ursaluna could secure victory over Regice, a streak of yellow lightning shot across the distant sky. In a matter of seconds, it had crossed over a thousand meters, arriving with blinding speed.

When it finally stopped, the newcomer revealed its form—entirely yellow, as if its body were made of pure electric ions.

This Pokémon was unlike the three original Regi Titans. It lacked conventional limbs: both arms consisted of twelve yellow tendrils, forming elongated conical limbs buzzing with electrical energy. Its legs bent sharply in a zigzag pattern, resembling bolts of lightning.

Each of its shoulders was adorned with a blue ring, while three increasingly smaller rings were embedded down its abdomen. On its head were seven glowing magenta-orange dots arranged in a distinct pattern.

The Legendary Electric Titan—Regieleki!

Only moments after Regieleki's arrival, a beam of red light followed in its wake, revealing yet another Pokémon.

This one's body resembled a deep crimson orb. Seven blue dots were arranged atop its head, and jagged patterns like razor-sharp fangs—lined its torso.

Two stout legs supported its lower half, standing on dark saw-edged scales like armored boots.

Its arms extended outward like the fossilized skull of a massive dragon. On the right side was a black upper jaw and cranium, complete with horns, eye ridges, and jagged teeth—fierce and intimidating. On the left side, a matching lower jaw of equally sharp black fangs completed the skeletal dragon look.

The Legendary Dragon Titan—Regidrago!

It was now unmistakably clear: the Tree of Beginning in this world far surpassed the one depicted in the movie canon, both in scale and in the power of its guardians. Just the defending lineup alone said everything.

"Vireee~"

At first, Electivire was merely on high alert, its entire body tensed as it scanned the surroundings for threats. But the moment it laid eyes on Regieleki, a spark of exhilaration flashed across its face.

Perhaps it was the magnetic pull of shared Electric typing—both attraction and rivalry. Or maybe it was the overwhelming aura Regieleki radiated. It could even have been the lure of its uniquely charged electromagnetic energy.

Whatever the reason, Electivire felt a powerful urge: to take down this opponent with all its might... and drain every last volt from it.
