Chapter 3 - eyes of the kingdom

CHAPTER 3 — Eyes of the Kingdom

The first rays of sunlight streamed through the towering windows of the Yeringham estate, illuminating polished marble floors and gilded walls. Rudra stood on his small legs, barely reaching his father's knee, yet his eyes carried the weight of someone far older. Though his body was that of a 3-year-old, his mind was sharp, deliberate, and calculating — a reincarnated adult in a child's fragile frame.

He observed the nursery with meticulous attention. Every swaying curtain, every decorative statue, every flicker of shadow carried meaning. He noticed the faint traces of residual mana in the corners of the room and even identified which of the household wards were older, weaker, and which were freshly reinforced.

Patterns… flows… intentions… everyone leaves a trace, no matter how subtle, he mused silently. And I will notice them all.

The estate was already alive. Servants moved carefully, carrying trays and whispered messages. Rudra's ears picked up conversations in the hallways, their hushed tones delivering more information than the words themselves.

"Did you hear?" one servant whispered, glancing around nervously. "House Lorien is sending a mage to observe the young master. They say… he is unusual, even dangerous."

The other clutched a tray with trembling hands. "Yes… and the royal mage council has taken notice. If he shows potential, they may send an evaluator. This child… he could change everything."

Rudra's lips curled into a subtle smirk. The world already notices me. Predictable. He cataloged every detail: fear in their voices, glances that flicked nervously over their shoulders, slight hesitations in movement — all patterns of intent and caution.

From the end of the hallway, a tall figure emerged. A deep-green robe flowed behind him as he approached silently, bowing ever so slightly. Rudra's adult mind registered every detail instantly:

Lorien Varas — mage of House Lorien

Age: early twenties, specialized in reconnaissance and observation

Aura: faint but sharp, cautious, highly controlled

Purpose: assess the Yeringham heir and report back to his house

Rudra's tiny hands flexed in amusement. He underestimates me.

Lorien whispered into a crystal pendant at his neck, and a soft pulse of light flickered. "Confirmed. The child is remarkable. Observation ongoing."

Rudra noted the faint aura signature emanating from the device — subtle, but revealing intent. Even hidden tools leave traces.

A second figure appeared from another corridor. Elderly, staff in hand, robes edged with silver, his every movement deliberate and precise. Rudra identified him immediately: Selian Trovic, observer from the royal mage council.

Selian's piercing gaze swept the nursery through the doorway, analyzing the child's aura, subtle magical output, and even the emotional energy around him. Rudra, however, stood with a small wooden toy in hand, perfectly calm, noticing every micro-expression, every subtle fluctuation of intent.

They are testing me. Let them. I am ready.

Thalan Miris, his tall, patient tutor, entered last. His robes shimmered faintly, and his warm smile hid a constantly analyzing mind. "Good morning, Rudra," he said. "Today we will observe the flow of magic around you. And… we have visitors."

Rudra's eyes sparkled. Finally, some real activity.

He watched as the servants whispered again.

"Did you see him? He moves with intent… even without speaking. The aura surrounding him is unusual for a child his age."

"Yes," replied the other, voice trembling. "Even the animals hesitate around him. I've never seen anything like it."

Rudra flexed his fingers. His S-rank protection subtly flared, a faint shield that expanded just enough to register the intruding magical presence without alarming the adults. He also tested his creation skill, forming a tiny, shimmering orb that floated above his palm, dissolving before anyone could notice — an instinctive rehearsal of his powers.

As the day progressed, the visitors observed the child, unaware of just how much he was taking in. Lorien Varas shifted his stance, sensing something unusual. "Something is… different," he muttered.

Selian Trovic's eyes narrowed. "Yes. Notify the council. Immediate evaluation is required."

Rudra's mind cataloged everything:

Lorien Varas — cautious, ambitious, potential rival

Selian Trovic — meticulous, evaluative, could be a future obstacle or ally

Thalan Miris — patient and observant, potentially invaluable as mentor and ally

The household staff — loyal, but unaware of the magnitude of his intellect

All patterns recorded. Allies and threats identified. The game has begun.

By mid-afternoon, Rudra's curiosity led him to wander the nursery's corners. Small constructs of creation magic formed momentarily — a tiny wooden bird, a floating orb — all dissolving before anyone could notice. He was observing mana flows, studying protective wards, and experimenting with subtle S-rank skill applications suitable for his small body.

Mark and Regina watched from a distance, awe and concern in equal measure. "He is… unlike any child," Mark whispered.

Rudra tilted his head. No. I am far from any ordinary child.

Later, as shadows stretched across the grand estate halls, Rudra noticed a minor anomaly: a faint ripple of mana near the west wing. Someone had come too close — a scout from a minor noble house, drawn by rumors of the Yeringham prodigy. The intruder's aura was weak but precise. Rudra's S-rank appraisal activated subtly, reading the scout's skill level and intentions, cataloging everything mentally.

Interesting. Early reconnaissance. They are cautious… but naive.

The scout hesitated, noticing a tiny shimmer in the air. "This child… something isn't right," he muttered. Before he could act further, Rudra's subtle protection skill pushed outward instinctively, enough to disrupt the scout's approach. He stumbled, aura recoiling. The estate remained safe, but the message was clear: even a child of three could not be trifled with.

Mark's hands shook slightly. "What… what is he?"

Regina embraced him tightly. "A miracle… and perhaps something more."

Night fell over Yeringham. The moon cast silver light across the estate, and shadows whispered secrets of rival houses, scouts, and observers. Rudra, small but deliberate, stood in the nursery's corner, analyzing patterns, alliances, and potential threats.

Let them watch. Let them plan. They are only beginning to understand…

By the time the estate settled into quiet, one fact was undeniable: the kingdom had begun to notice the Yeringham heir. And Rudra, even as a child, had already begun to see the board, the pieces, and the game he would dominate.

This is only the beginning.
