A tense silence hung between them. Lu Jinchen tightened his hold. "How long will this continue?"
She leaned against him and sighed. "I don't know."
He exhaled slowly, but his grip on her waist didn't loosen. He failed to understand. She has already left that world, and now she was living her life with him, so why were these people not ready to let her go.
"Why do they want to kill you?"
Her lips curved into a sneer, her tone cold. "Because they think I monopolized the emperor's heart. To them, I was the reason they lived in his shadow. Now that I've slipped into this world, they refuse to let me live in peace."
"But they are stupid," she mocked. "The emperor's heart never belonged to me. He never loved me. If he did, he wouldn't have touched those women while professing his love for me. The only person he loves is himself. Then can I monopolize him?"
Lu Jinchen heard the resentment in her tone and couldn't help but ask. "Do you resent him for monopolizing you?"
