(Kai's POV)
I woke to the soft press of lips against my temple.
Then my cheekbone.
Then the corner of my mouth.
Warmth seeped through me, slow and syrupy, it felt euphoric…but then my mind caught up.
My lashes fluttered open…and I froze. Not necessarily in that order.
Jack's face hovered inches from mine, his eyes still closed, his breath was steady.
He was steady…just still asleep.
His hand curled possessively around my hip, his fingers kneading the dip of my waist like he'd done it a thousand times before.
Before I could react, there was another kiss, this time to the pulse point beneath my jaw.
I closed my eyes…. allowing myself to feel as a hum escaped me, involuntary…traitorous.
My first good feeling in years.
Then his eyes snapped open.
We both froze. My chest rose and fell softly.
Morning light gilded the sweat-damp strands of his hair, his irises blown black, his lips parted.
