"Mum, I'm home!" Grey called out.
He pushed the door open and walked into the house with a beaming, triumphant smile on his face.
"Grey?" Clara called back from the kitchen.
He heard the sound of light, hurried footsteps, and suddenly a small girl appeared in front of him, her face lit up with a hopeful grin.
"Bro… Grey," Jesse called out, catching herself quickly after almost addressing him as her brother.
"What do you want?" Grey asked, a sharp edge of annoyance cutting through his tone.
Jesse's face fell instantly, her expression flattening into sadness.
She looked as though she might begin sobbing, but she quickly fought back the urge and regained her composure.
"I don't want anything, Grey. I just came out to greet you," Jesse whispered.
Grey ignored her, walking past her nonchalantly toward the kitchen, leaving Jesse standing there, choked up.
