Chapter 660 - Chapter 660: Sisters

[Gamora sat alone on the alien grassland, the ethereal landscape of Ego's world stretching endlessly around her in impossible perfection. Beside her, two plant structures that resembled wheat ears swayed rhythmically side by side in the artificial breeze, their movements creating a persistent friction sound that seemed to echo the irritation building in her chest.]

[Gamora was already deeply upset by her argument with Star-Lord, and the repetitive, scraping noise from the plants only served to amplify her growing impatience. She tried to ignore the sound, focusing instead on the communication device in her hands and the troubling silence from Rocket's end. After enduring the grating noise for what felt like an eternity, she finally reached her breaking point.]

[With a sharp, angry motion, she drew her sword and swung it violently through the air, cleanly severing both plants at their base. The annoying friction sound finally ceased, leaving only the artificial wind and the distant hum of Ego's planetary machinery.]

[Gamora released a heavy sigh that seemed to carry the weight of all her frustrations. She hadn't expected that after arriving on this world, Star-Lord's entire personality would undergo such a dramatic transformation. The irony wasn't lost on her – initially, he had been the skeptical one who didn't trust Ego, and it had been Gamora herself who had persuaded him to come here. Now their positions had completely reversed, and she found herself in the uncomfortable role of the voice of caution.]

[She whispered to herself, her voice barely audible above the alien wind, "This is absolutely terrible!" The situation was spiraling beyond her ability to control, and she could feel the foundations of their relationship shifting in ways that frightened her.]

[At that moment, her enhanced hearing caught something that made her narrow her eyes with suspicion. She turned around slowly, scanning the perfect horizon until she spotted a spacecraft approaching her location. The vessel was flying low and fast, its trajectory suggesting purpose rather than casual exploration.]

[Looking at the familiar design – identical to their beloved Milano – her first thought was that Rocket had somehow managed to repair their damaged ship and had come to find them. Relief began to flood through her as she imagined reuniting with the rest of their makeshift family.]

[However, as the spacecraft drew closer, Gamora's relief quickly transformed into alarm. The ship wasn't slowing down at all; instead, it was accelerating directly toward her position with obvious hostile intent. Her combat instincts, honed by years of training under Thanos, immediately kicked into high gear.]

[Gamora's eyes widened in shock as her exceptional eyesight allowed her to see through the cockpit transparisteel. There, gripping the controls with unmistakable fury, was Nebula. The sight of her adopted sister's rage-twisted features made Gamora suck in a sharp breath of recognition and fear. "Oh no!" she whispered.]

[Without hesitation, Gamora turned and began running as fast as her enhanced physiology would allow. Behind her, Nebula's finger found the trigger without a moment's pause, and the ship's weapons systems erupted in a deadly light show. Dense streams of energy bolts and projectiles rained down around Gamora's fleeing form, forcing her to dodge and weave as debris exploded around her feet.]

["Ahhhhhhh!" Nebula's roar of fury echoed from the ship's speakers, the sound carrying years of accumulated resentment, jealousy, and pain. It was the cry of someone who had finally reached the breaking point and no longer cared about consequences or collateral damage.]

[Gamora sprinted toward the edge of a nearby cliff, her mind calculating angles and distances with the precision of a trained assassin. Without slowing down, she launched herself over the precipice just as Nebula's barrage intensified. The very second after Gamora disappeared over the edge, Nebula drove her stolen spacecraft directly into the spot where her sister had been standing, sending chunks of alien rock and soil flying in all directions.]

[From her position on a narrow ledge below, Gamora looked up at the spacecraft hovering in the sky above and couldn't help but curse under her breath: "Completely insane!" But even as the words left her mouth, she saw the ship banking into a graceful arc, its nose beginning to point back in her direction for another attack run.]

[Nebula opened fire again, her weapons systems painting the cliff face with deadly energy as she tried to eliminate any possible hiding spots. The shadow cast by the overhanging rocks provided Gamora with temporary concealment, but she knew it wouldn't last long.]

[Spotting a cave opening in the cliff face, Gamora pushed her legs to their limit and dove through the entrance just as the barrage reached lethal intensity. The energy bolts scorched the air where she had been standing mere moments before, leaving glowing marks on the stone.]

[She had barely managed to catch her breath, bent over with her hands on her knees in the relative safety of the cave, when she heard the unmistakable sound of Nebula's engines growing louder. Looking back toward the entrance, her heart sank as she saw her sister steering the spacecraft directly toward the cave opening.]

[Gamora didn't hesitate for even a second. She turned and ran deeper into the cave system as fast as her legs could carry her, the sound of energy bolts continuously striking the ground behind her. Each impact sent up clouds of pulverized stone and dust that made breathing difficult and visibility nearly impossible.]

[Nebula, driven beyond rational thought by her overwhelming emotions, actually piloted her stolen ship directly into the cave opening. She held down the firing controls without releasing them, not caring that the ship's hull was scraping against the cave walls or that the structural integrity of her vessel was being compromised with every passing second.]

["Ahhhhhhhh!" Nebula's continued screaming filled the cave system, echoing off the walls and mixing with the sounds of destruction. She no longer cared whether the spacecraft would be damaged beyond repair – her only focus was giving physical form to the rage that had been consuming her for so long.]

[The overwhelming barrage of energy fire put Gamora's life in immediate jeopardy. Each step could have been her last as the cave around her was systematically destroyed by her sister's fury. Fortunately, the cave system opened up ahead of her, revealing another cliff that dropped into darkness. Without hesitation, she leaped into the unknown.]

[After her heart-stopping fall, she managed to find purchase on another ledge and turned to look upward. Nebula's spacecraft roared overhead, passing through the space where Gamora had been standing just moments before. Large chunks of stone and debris rained down from the damaged cave ceiling, but by some miracle, none of the falling rocks struck her.]

[The spacecraft, now badly damaged from its reckless passage through the cave system, crash-landed heavily on the cave floor below. It spun wildly toward the deepest part of the cavern before finally coming to rest against the far wall with a thunderous impact. Almost immediately, flames began to lick at the damaged hull as fuel systems ruptured and electrical components sparked.]

[Looking down at the burning wreckage, Gamora spotted a heavy weapons system that had been thrown clear of the crash. The massive gun lay among the debris like a gift from the cosmos, offering her a chance to end this confrontation on her own terms.]

[Inside the crumpled cockpit, Nebula was struggling frantically against her restraints, but the nose of the spacecraft had been severely deformed in the crash. The twisted metal was pressing down on one of her cybernetic legs, pinning her in place and making escape impossible. Her enhanced strength was useless against the leverage of the damaged hull.]

[When Nebula saw Gamora approaching the heavy machine gun – a weapon that was nearly as large as Gamora herself – her fury reached new heights. The sight of her sister gaining the upper hand made her thrash even more violently against her mechanical prison, but the damaged spacecraft held her fast.]

[Gamora struggled to lift and position the massive weapon, her enhanced strength allowing her to manage what would have been impossible for most humanoids. With practiced efficiency, she connected the power cables with her hands, and the weapon came to life with a deep, threatening hum as the multi-barrel assembly began to rotate.]

[Almost immediately, the heavy gun erupted in a stream of high-velocity projectiles. Gamora couldn't help but yell with a mixture of exertion and emotional release as she fought to control the weapon's massive recoil. The sound of the gun was deafening in the enclosed space of the cave.]

[The concentrated fire hammered against the nose of the spacecraft with relentless intensity. Fortunately for Nebula, the Milano-class ships were built to withstand significant punishment, and the transparisteel viewing ports were reinforced with advanced materials. The projectiles managed to create only small spider-web cracks in the cockpit's protective barrier, though they wouldn't hold forever under such sustained assault.]

[However, this protection was clearly temporary. If the barrage continued at its current intensity, it was only a matter of time before even the reinforced transparisteel would fail catastrophically, and Nebula would be exposed to the full fury of the heavy weapon.]

[Under the continued strafing from the machine gun, the already damaged spacecraft could no longer maintain its structural integrity. With a groaning sound of tortured metal, the entire vessel shifted and began to collapse further, sliding deeper into the cave system while emitting even larger showers of sparks and flames.]

"You two sisters certainly have a deep hatred for each other, don't you?" Natasha observed, looking at Gamora with the understanding of someone who had her own complicated family relationships. Her comment made her think immediately of her own sister, Yelena Belova, and the complex web of emotions that connected them.

Yelena, who was watching the mysterious screen from her own location, also found her thoughts turning to Natasha. She had harbored intense resentment toward her adopted sister for years, believing that Natasha had abandoned her and left her to continue suffering alone in the brutal environment of the Red Room. The pain of that perceived betrayal had never fully healed.

After Natasha's activities had been exposed through the screen's revelations, Yelena's feelings had become even more complex. She found herself torn between envy and understanding, wondering why Natasha had been able to escape the Red Room's control while she had remained trapped. The rational part of her mind knew that escape opportunities were rare and dangerous, but her heart still ached with the feeling of abandonment.

Deep down, Yelena didn't hate Natasha for escaping the Red Room – she hated that Natasha hadn't found a way to take her along. The pursuit of freedom was something any Red Room graduate could understand, but the loneliness of being left behind was a wound that had never properly healed.

Natasha lowered her head, deliberately pushing thoughts of Yelena aside for the moment. She turned to address the assembled group, her voice carrying the authority of someone delivering critical intelligence. "Thor has confirmed that Thanos has already attacked Nidavellir. Only the Dwarf King Eitri survived the assault. Thor needs assistance restarting the stellar forge, and then he'll come help us deal with the Ego situation."

Drax stood up immediately, his literal mind latching onto the practical aspects of the mission. "I'll go investigate this situation! I've never actually seen any dwarves before – this could be educational! Does anyone else want to accompany me?" His enthusiasm for new experiences was evident despite the serious nature of the mission.

The assembled heroes looked around at each other, most shaking their heads as they considered their various responsibilities and capabilities. Only Captain Marvel showed any interest, her expression thoughtful. "I'll come with you. My energy projection abilities might be useful for restarting a stellar forge."

Drax nodded with approval, and within minutes, Heimdall had activated the Bifrost to transport them across the vast distances of space to the realm of the dwarven weapon-smiths.

Star-Lord and Gamora had decided to remain on Earth, partly because Star-Lord had received a communication from Yondu indicating that the Ravager captain was already en route to their location. The plan was for the Guardians to reunite and then venture back into space to take the fight directly to Ego rather than waiting for the cosmic entity to bring his destructive plans to Earth.

Taking the initiative was always preferable to sitting defensively and waiting for an enemy to make the first move. Besides, Heimdall's all-seeing abilities meant that they would receive immediate warning if Ego attempted to approach any of the Nine Realms directly.

[Back in the cave, Gamora approached the edge of the pit where Nebula's ship had finally come to rest and peered down into the smoky darkness below. Suddenly, she heard her sister's voice calling up from the wreckage – not filled with rage this time, but with something that sounded almost like panic.]

[Nebula was well and truly trapped in the pilot's seat, unable to extract herself from the twisted metal that held her fast. Worse, the damage to the ship's systems meant that a catastrophic explosion was becoming increasingly likely with each passing moment.]

[Just as Nebula was beginning to face the very real possibility that her quest for revenge might end with her own death, she heard the distinctive sound of metal being forcibly bent and twisted. Turning her head with difficulty, she was shocked to see Gamora using her enhanced strength to lift and move the heavy metal plates that were blocking access to the cockpit.]

[The truth was that despite all their conflicts and resentments, Gamora had never stopped loving her adopted sister. Their relationship was complicated by years of competition, jealousy, and manipulation at Thanos's hands, but underneath all the anger and hurt, genuine affection remained. Gamora had known from the beginning that the heavy machine gun couldn't penetrate the reinforced transparisteel quickly enough to actually kill Nebula – her violent display had been more about emotional release than genuine murder attempt.]
