Hero Killer

Chapter 5: Into the Abyss

---

A Dangerous Lead

Jin-Woo sifted through the scattered files on his desk, each one containing a fragment of information about the Obsidian Order. It wasn't much, but it was enough to form a trail. Every clue pointed to an abandoned train station on the outskirts of Seoul—a place long forgotten, shrouded in rumors of Kore experiments and disappearances.

The Order was no longer a distant myth. It was real, and Jin-Woo was determined to find it. If he wanted to master his Kore and uncover the truth about the heroes and villains running the world, this was the only path forward.

The shadows coiled around him as he prepared to leave, their movements restless. They seemed to sense the danger ahead, but Jin-Woo had no intention of turning back.

"Let's see what you're hiding," he muttered, stepping into the night.

Arrival at the Station

The train station was a relic of the past, its metal framework rusted and overgrown with vines. The only light came from the flickering neon of a broken sign that barely illuminated the cracked concrete platform. Jin-Woo approached cautiously, his shadows swirling around his feet, ready to strike at the first sign of danger.

The air was heavy, thick with an unnatural presence. Jin-Woo's instincts screamed at him to turn back, but he pressed on. He stepped onto the platform, his footsteps echoing through the empty station.

"Welcome."

The voice came from nowhere, yet it seemed to come from everywhere at once. Jin-Woo spun around, his Kore flaring as shadows erupted from the ground.

A figure stepped out of the darkness, cloaked in an aura of shifting shadows that seemed to devour the faint light around them. Their face was obscured by a mask, but their presence was overwhelming.

"You've been looking for us," the figure said, their tone calm and measured.

Jin-Woo narrowed his eyes, his shadows bristling in response. "The Obsidian Order. Where are they?"

The figure chuckled. "You stand before them. Or, at least, what remains. Tell me, Jin-Woo, why do you seek us?"

Jin-Woo hesitated for a moment before replying. "To control my Kore. To grow stronger."

The figure tilted their head. "And what are you willing to sacrifice for that strength?"

Jin-Woo didn't flinch. "Whatever it takes."

The figure extended a hand, shadows swirling around their arm. "Then step into the abyss, and we'll see if you're worthy."

The First Trial

Without warning, the platform beneath Jin-Woo collapsed, and he fell into a cavernous void. The shadows swallowed him whole, leaving him disoriented as he landed in a dimly lit chamber. The walls were lined with ancient runes that pulsed with dark energy.

A voice echoed through the chamber, deep and resonant. "Your first trial begins now. Show us the strength of your Kore, or be consumed by it."

The ground trembled as shadowy figures emerged from the walls, their forms indistinct but menacing. They moved with unnatural speed, their claws slashing through the air as they lunged at Jin-Woo.

He reacted instinctively, his shadows surging forward to meet the attackers. The tendrils coiled around the nearest figure, crushing it with a sickening crunch, but two more took its place.

Jin-Woo gritted his teeth, his Kore flaring as he summoned a wave of darkness to sweep across the chamber. The shadows collided with the figures, tearing them apart, but the strain on his body was immense. He could feel the energy draining from him, the weight of his Kore pressing down on his mind.

"You're not strong enough," the voice taunted. "You'll never survive like this."

Jin-Woo growled, pushing himself harder. He forced the shadows to obey, shaping them into weapons—a blade, a shield, anything to keep the attackers at bay. But the figures kept coming, relentless and unyielding.

A Revelation

As Jin-Woo fought, something within him began to shift. The shadows around him pulsed, as if responding to a deeper part of his Kore.

"Let go," the voice urged. "Stop holding back."

Jin-Woo hesitated. He had always tried to control his Kore, to shape it into something manageable. But now, faced with overwhelming odds, he realized that control wasn't enough.

He closed his eyes, allowing the shadows to flow freely. They surged around him, no longer restrained, forming a swirling vortex of darkness that consumed everything in its path. The shadowy figures disintegrated, their forms dissolving into nothingness.

When the chaos subsided, Jin-Woo stood alone in the chamber, his breath ragged. The runes on the walls glowed brighter, and the voice spoke again, this time with a hint of approval.

"You have passed the first trial. But be warned, Jin-Woo—true power demands sacrifice. Are you prepared to pay the price?"

The Reunion

As Jin-Woo emerged from the chamber, his body felt heavier, his mind clouded. The power he had unleashed was intoxicating, but it came with a cost. He could feel the darkness within him growing stronger, whispering in the back of his mind.

Waiting for him outside the station was a familiar figure. Ara.

"What are you doing here?" Jin-Woo demanded, his voice harsher than he intended.

Ara's expression was a mixture of relief and anger. "I could ask you the same thing. Do you even realize what you've gotten yourself into?"

Jin-Woo glared at her, his shadows flaring. "Stay out of this, Ara. You don't understand."

"I understand more than you think," Ara shot back. "The Obsidian Order isn't going to help you. They'll use you, Jin-Woo. They'll turn you into a monster."

Jin-Woo's hands clenched into fists. "Maybe that's what I need to become."

Ara's eyes softened, her voice trembling. "You're wrong. You don't need to lose yourself to gain power. There's still a way back, Jin-Woo. You just have to trust me."

For a moment, Jin-Woo hesitated, the shadows around him flickering uncertainly. But then he shook his head, his resolve hardening.

"I don't have time for this," he said, turning away. "I have a mission, and I won't let anyone stop me—not even you."

As he disappeared into the night, Ara watched him go, her heart heavy with worry.

"Please, Jin-Woo," she whispered. "Don't let the darkness take you."
