Chapter 7 - Chapter 7

Chapter 7: The Hollow's Whisper

The days blurred together as Kael and Lira made their way back to the city. The weight of the Nexus was pressing on him, growing heavier with each passing moment. The whispers in his mind were constant now, like a dark, insistent lullaby that played in the background of his thoughts. He could no longer ignore them, and with each day that passed, they grew harder to push aside.

Lira, ever watchful, didn't ask him about the incident with the Riftspawn. She saw the blood on his hands, the unnatural calmness in his eyes, but said nothing. They both understood that survival, in this world, came at a cost—whether that cost was the loss of one's humanity or something far worse.

As they approached the outskirts of the city, Kael felt the familiar pressure in his chest, a heavy knot of unease. The city of Sylith had always been a place of refuge, a temporary respite from the dangers of the Rift and the horrors of the Tower. But now, it felt like a cage—a place where he could no longer escape the truth of what he had become.

Lira stopped in her tracks, her gaze fixed on the tall spires in the distance. "We'll need to lay low for a while," she said, her voice low and cautious. "The Guild won't take kindly to our... unorthodox methods."

Kael didn't respond immediately. He could hear the sound of the city's distant hustle, the calls of street vendors, the low hum of machinery. It should have been comforting, the familiarity of it all. But there was no peace in the world anymore. Not for him. Not for anyone.

The Nexus pulsed inside him, demanding attention. Kael clenched his fists, trying to control the wave of power that threatened to overwhelm him. The hunger was growing. He could feel it in every fiber of his being.

"I don't care about the Guild," he said, his voice flat. "I'm done playing by their rules."

Lira raised an eyebrow, her lips curling into a faint smile. "That's dangerous talk, Kael."

"I've always been dangerous," he muttered.

---

They entered the city under the cover of night, blending into the shadows of the alleyways, avoiding the guards patrolling the streets. Sylith was a city built on secrets, its streets lined with hidden doors and concealed passageways. It was the perfect place for those who needed to disappear, and Kael had made a habit of vanishing when he needed to.

The city's skyline loomed above them, a jagged silhouette against the dark sky. In the distance, the Tower of Eternity could be seen, its dark spires cutting through the heavens, an ever-present reminder of the price of power. Kael's gaze lingered on it for a moment before he forced himself to look away.

"Where are we going?" Lira asked, her voice cutting through the silence.

"Somewhere safe," Kael replied, though the word felt hollow in his mouth. He didn't believe in safety anymore. Not after everything he'd seen. Not after what he'd done.

They reached a nondescript building on the edge of the city, its exterior worn and unremarkable. Lira knocked three times on the door, a coded sequence that only a few people in the city knew. After a moment, the door creaked open, revealing a shadowed figure standing in the doorway.

"Kael Valen," the man said, his voice cold. "You're a long way from the Rift."

"I needed a place to hide," Kael replied, stepping inside without waiting for an invitation.

The man, a former Guild contact, closed the door behind them, casting the room into darkness. "I can only keep you hidden for so long," he said, his eyes flicking to Lira. "The Guild's eyes are everywhere, and they won't forget your little... incident."

"Then I'll be ready for them," Kael said, his voice low and dangerous. "We've got bigger problems than the Guild."

The man studied him for a moment, then nodded. "I assume you're talking about the Tower?"

Kael's eyes hardened. "I'm talking about the Nexus."

The man's expression flickered, a mix of concern and understanding. "You've bonded with it fully, haven't you? You've let it consume you."

Kael said nothing. He didn't need to. The man could see it in his eyes.

"Then you're already halfway to becoming a Hollow," the man continued, his voice almost a whisper. "Once the Nexus has you, there's no going back. It will feast on your soul until there's nothing left."

Kael's gaze darkened. "I'll find a way to get rid of it."

"You're a fool," the man spat, stepping back. "You can't just get rid of the Nexus. It's part of you now. It's a parasite. And if you don't control it, it will control you."

Kael's hands clenched into fists. "Then I'll destroy it."

The man's eyes widened. "You can't destroy the Tower. It's beyond your control."

"Then I'll burn it down," Kael said coldly.

There was a long silence between them, the weight of Kael's words hanging in the air like a storm. Finally, the man sighed. "You'll need allies if you want to do that. And you'll need to learn how to use the Nexus before it consumes you completely."

Kael didn't respond. He didn't need to be told what was at stake. The Nexus had already taken so much from him, and he couldn't let it take more. Not now.

He turned to Lira, who had been silently observing the exchange. "Are you in?" he asked.

Lira hesitated, then nodded. "I don't trust the Nexus. But I trust you."

"Good," Kael said, his voice hardening. "We have work to do."

---

As the man led them to a hidden room beneath the building, Kael could feel the Nexus pressing against him again. It was growing impatient, hungry, eager for more. But Kael refused to give in. He couldn't afford to.

Not yet.

The world outside was a broken shell, a reflection of everything that had been shattered when the Tower first appeared. And Kael knew that as long as the Nexus was inside him, he would never be free. But there was one thing he could do.

He could make the Tower fall.

And he would do whatever it took to make it burn.
