Chapter 7 - Little Time

2 Weeks Later

Outside of Berrington, the forest, James and Rachel are walking up the hill out scouting for infected or the raiders.

James: I don't know....maybe I should've just gotten her a gift back then and be done with it. My gift to her was the apology.

Shawn looks over to see Rachel staring at the ground, lost in thought.

James: Rachel?

Rachel doesn't acknowledge James.

James: Rachel!

Rachel looks up.

Rachel: Huh?

James: You with me?

Rachel: Yes, yeah. I'm good.

Rachel nods at James.

James: Anyway, she gives me the silent treatment. Fuck. I mean there are times in this world I forget my own goddamned birthday. In a world like this, it's common to be reminded due to weather.

Rachel: What'd you do? Did you try apologizing to her?

James: I just said she....

James stops and shakes his head.

James: Okay. What's up with you?

Rachel: Nothing.

James: You sure?

Rachel: Yeah. Why?

James: You've been around me for a year now. I can tell when your minds on something.....is it...Moses?

Rachel: No, James. I'm fine. Really.

James: Well, you know, whatever it is, you can talk to me about it.

Rachel: Okay.....

Meanwhile, Kyle and Sarah are also on lookout and patrol, settling inside a cabin where Sarah is cooking dinner.

Sarah: You feel like Rachel will get to a point where she won't want to talk to us anymore?

Kyle: What do you mean?

Sarah: I don't know. Feel like the last two weeks, we haven't really talked with her, you know?

Kyle: We've been preparing for the raiders....and patrolling....plus, she's fifteen. Fifteen-year-old girls don't really want to be around old people anymore. She wants to hang out with friends like Abigail.

Sarah: She doesn't really talk about Moses.

Kyle: Yeah....it's hard...

Sarah: She hasn't talked about Laura, either.....you and I never got a chance to talk about that.....Kyle, do you feel it was right she did?

Kyle sighs, folding his lips.

Kyle: I wish she didn't....but Laura was going to kill you.....I almost killed her....but then she surrendered...I was gonna keep Laura alive to see that she didn't need to give people away to assholes like Wes....they're not gonna make it, Sarah. The people of Berrington....They're not gonna make it....they can't survive with or without us; they'll slow us down....and then; they'll die one by one.

Sarah: You really believe that?

The two then hear some gunshots off in the distance and both look out the window, towards the mountain.

Kyle: Sounds like they've found some infected nearby.

Sarah lowers the heat on the small portable stove and lets the stew simmer. Sarah looks Kyle over, then goes over to him and places an arm over his shoulder.

Sarah: Hey....it took me a while to become who I am now.

Kyle: It took both of us.

Sarah leans in and kisses Kyle on the lips, he places his right hand on her neck then slides it to the back of her head, deepening the kiss.

Kyle: I love you. You know that, right?

Sarah: Of course you do. I love you, too.

Sarah stands up and Kyle removes his hand off of her and she makes her way back over to the food.

Sarah: Who else is gonna deal with your grumpy angry ass?

Kyle chuckles.

On the hill, James is firing two shots with a sniper rifle, before he lowers it.

James: How the fuck does Margaret handle this thing?

Rachel: She says it's a basic concept.

James: Yeah, for her.

Rachel: Well, she is ex A.O.W. so....that makes sense....

James: Yeah...when we were at this beach settlement during the Krens wars, I remember her and Marcus would always have these competitions of who could shoot the infected or the Krens in the waters to pass the time.

James looks over at Rachel.

James: You want to give it a spin?

Rachel: You sure?

James: Why not?

Rachel laughs, steps up and switches guns with James, then she raises the gun and looks through the scope.

James: You ever use one of these before?

Rachel: Yeah...without the scope, actually. Two years ago, back in New Chicago.....Kyle and Sarah had me cover them with a rifle against these bandit assholes. First time, Kyle let me hold a gun.

James: He didn't let you hold a gun from the start when he met you?

Rachel: No, it took me putting a bullet in some asshole's face to get him to finally fucking trust me! Was actually my first time killing someone.....

Rachel shoots an infected, before James sighs, thinking about the first time he had to kill someone.

James: You shouldn't have had to do that....someone at your age.....

Rachel: He was gonna kill Kyle.

James: I know. I'm not saying it's not right what you did, but....to kill someone at your age....it's....it's just rough.

Rachel fires and sees a few infected running out and she starts to fire and takes them out.

James: I think that's all of them. There might be some more this way.

The two start to head off in another direction.

Rachel: Where the hell are they coming from?

James: Infected hordes like to move through a certain area in the winter. They leave behind a few stragglers in the process.

Rachel: The same every year?

James: Yeah....think of it like hibernation.

Rachel: What's hibernation?

James: Well, animals like squirrels and bears sometimes gather food for the winter, so they can take a long rest.

Rachel: Bears sleep through the winter.

James: For the most part....

Rachel: Okay, then why do infected migrate so much?

James: Well, when a biometric temperature reaches a certain...shit, I don't fucking know, man.

Rachel: What? I thought you were the smart one.

James: I am. Just don't tell Shawn.

James and Rachel laugh. Rachel raises up the rifle and looks through the scope.

James: There's some by the shed. Looks like they're moving downhill.

Rachel: Why?

James hums as he looks through his binoculars.

James: Ah! There it is! Dead animal! Over by that overturned truck, they're feeding on a dead deer.

Rachel moves the gun over and sees what James was talking about through the scope, then she fires at the infected, which causes more to come out, but she was able to shoot them down.

James: Looks clear. Let's look over this way.

Rachel lowers the gun and she follows James.

James: Here. By those ski lifts. Okay, by that tower, under those gondolas.

Rachel: The what?

James: The ski lift.

Rachel: Oh, why didn't you just say lifts?

James: I didn't name the fucking thing, damn it.

Rache begins to fire at the infected.

James: Shame Shawn missing out on this. Hope Kyle and Sarah are cooking that stew. Knowing him, he probably asked Sarah to make it. He would've burnt the hell out of that goddamn stew. How is it he can kill, but he can't cook and a simple concept as soup.

Rachel chuckles a bit.

Rachel: You want me to go down to the lodge and check? Cassandra's showed me how to cook and all.

James: I don't mind.

Rachel nods and heads off down towards the lodge where they're holding up. James and Rachel walk in.

Kyle: Was that you two out there shooting?

James: Oh, just some stragglers. Rachel tried out Shawn's rifle.

James and Rachel go to sit down at a table near Kyle and Sarah.

Sarah: Really? How'd it feel?

Rachel: Yeah. Feels good. Similar to that rifle you guys had me shoot to save your asses in Chicago.

Sarah laughs.

Rachel: So....we good?

James: Well, we still got that music store. I bet there's some stragglers in there. I think John said area is long overdue for a sweep. I can keep watch.

Sarah: By yourself?

James: Yeah....

Kyle looks over at Rachel.

Kyle: You up for it?

Rachel: Sure.

Kyle and Sarah walk out, before Rachel walks up to James.

Rachel: You sure you're gonna be okay?

James: Yeah, kid. I'll be good. Now go on. They're waiting on you.

Kyle and Sarah go to one horse while Rachel follows them.

Rachel: Alright. Let's go.

Sarah: Okay. Follow us, kid.

Kyle gets on his horse and helps Sarah up as she sits down behind him and Rachel mounts her horse, then they begin to gallop away.

Sarah: So you and James come across anything when you were out?

Rachel: Just a few infected along the ridge.

Kyle: No raiders?

Rachel: No. You?

Kyle: Two infected. Nothing we can't handle, though.

Sarah: Shawn tells us you're handling your own quite well on the patrol groups. He's even recommended you for paired patrols.

Kyle: I think you're a bit young for it, though.

Rachel: I'm better shot than almost all of those other kids. Especially Morgan. And Abigail and I have had more experience more than the adults in Berrington than....

Kyle: Look....if you think you are ready, I trust you....and Abigail.

Rachel: Thanks.

The trio keep on trotting on.

Rachel: Hey, I have a question.

Kyle: I might have an answer.

Rachel: How much of a movie buff are you?

Kyle: Me; definitely. Sarah; not so much.

Sarah: Hey, not everyone that survived the apocalypse had access to old movies like you did, Kyle.

Kyle laughs.

Kyle: Anyway, why do you ask?

Sarah: Last week, Abigail, Cassandra, James and I came across this old VHS and DVD store called "Blockbuster". It looked interesting, so I went inside and picked up a few movies. No infected by the way. Kyle, since you're a movie buff, what is the movie "A Bug's Life" about?

Kyle: Aw, that was a classic kid! That was before I was born actually! Came out in 1998.

Rachel: Wait, this movie is fourty years old?!

Kyle: Yep. Anyway, in the movie, these ants that live on a hill are being terrorized and forced to give half their food to this grasshopper gang. One ant, Flik, decides to gather up these warrior bugs who turn out to be circus clowns or circus bugs as it's pronounced in the movie to come fight these grasshoppers.

Rachel: Wait, back up, does the main ant get warrior bugs or circus bugs to fight the grasshopper gang?

Kyle: Circus bugs, who the main ant thought was warrior bugs.

Sarah laughs.

Kyle: What are you laughing about?

Sarah: This movie you're talking about sounds like our entire life.

Kyle: How so?

Sarah: You're the ant that gathered a bunch of warrior bugs to fight off grasshoppers. You; the ant. The warrior bugs; the raiders and bloodhogs. The grasshoppers; Kronos.

A long pause.

Kyle: Huh. I never thought of it like that.

Rachel: Surprisingly, I'm more interested in this than I thought. When can we watch this movie?

Sarah: How about tonight? After our planning?

Rachel: Really?

Sarah: Yeah...we'll have a family movie night.

Rachel: Sweet. I'd like that!

The three make up to a fence and the old motel building.

Kyle: Music store's up that way...we're gonna have to leave the horses here.

Rachel: Okay....

The three stop then get off their horses before they jump the fence.

Kyle: There it is.

Sarah points to the tall sign a few miles up ahead. The three walk to two large vehicles blocking the road before Kyle turns to Rachel.

Sarah: Need a boost?

Rachel: I got it.

Rachel climbs up the old moving truck and gets on top of it then gets on the other side.

Rachel: Hey, guys. I don't think we can go this way.

Sarah: What? Why?

Sarah and Kyle climb up on top of the truck and see that the area was dried out and the road was sunken in.

Kyle: Ah, that's why.

Rachel: Now what?

Sarah looked at the motel building next to them.

Sarah: Well, if you're up for it, we can try cutting through that hotel.

Rachel: I'm up for it.

Rachel climbs back up on the truck then they head over to the hotel building. The three make it to the front door and Rachel tries to open it but it doesn't budge. Sarah sighs.

Rachel: Of course.

Kyle: Oh, that might be something.

Sarah and Rachel turn to see Kyle staring at a crawlspace under what looks like a collapsed roof.

Kyle: Think you two can fit in there?

Sarah kneels down to look at it.

Sarah: Hmm...maybe. Worth a shot. I'll go first and then Rachel can follow me.

Kyle nods then picks up the part of the collapsed rubble and Sarah crawls through into a room then looked around.

Rachel: I'm through. Come on, Rachel.

Sarah hears Rachel crawling through before she turns and holds out her hand to her to help her up. Racel takes Sarah's hand and she helps her stand up.

Rachel: Made it!

Sarah: Hold up, big boy. We'll let you in.

Sarah and Rachel walk out of the room and look around to make sure no threats were nearby then she sees the front door.

Sarah: Rachel, keep an eye out. I'll go let the old man in.

Kyle: I heard that! I'm not old!

Sarah heads to the door and begins to unlock it, then she opens the door to see Kyle standing there, leaning to the side as his right hand is braced against the door framed. Sarah gives a lustful grin.

Kyle: What?

Sarah: You look incredibly sexy right now. You standing on the door frame like that. I want to bite you right now.

Kyle raises an eyebrow.

Kyle: What?

Sarah: I'm sorry. I am just radiating a lot of horniness.

Rachel: Motherfucker, I wish I was deaf like Savannah right now.

Hearing Rachel's voice, Sarah turns to see Rachel as both her and Kyle give embarrassed looks.

Kyle: How long have you been standing there?

Rachel: Long enough....Anyway, I found a way through.

Kyle: Right...right...uh....let's cut on through, then.

Kyle walks up ahead, before Sarah joins Rachel.

Rachel: "Radiating horniness?"

Sarah: What?

Rachel stands in front of a snack machine, that was covering a giant hole as Kyle pushes the machine aside. Kyle goes through the hole in the wall, then Sarah and finally Rachel. The three continue on.

Rachel: You guys haven't came here before, right?

The three climb through a hole then land into another room.

Sarah: No, we've just patrolled the streets last two weeks.

Kyle: Feels a bit of an oversight now.

Sarah: Maybe...

The three see a dead Stitcher that's stuck to the wall.

Kyle: Well, that's something.

Kyle looks the Stitcher over.

Rachel: When did Laura send the last patrol here?

Sarah shrugs.

Sarah: Don't know.

Rachel: Is the infected one of ours?

Sarah: No, can't be...this one's old. Probably just roamed in.

Kyle stands up and they continued through until they come up to these large double doors. Kyle opens the door, slowly and they could hear some infected and Stitchers inside.

Rachel: We're patrolling, aren't we?

Sarah and Kyle share a look, before Kyle nods.

Kyle: Alright. Let's take these fuckers out.

The three head on what is the lobby area, and quietly, take out the few infected and Stitchers inside.

Rachel: Guys, I think we did it.

A moment of silence.

Sarah: Yeah, I think so, too.

Kyle nods.

Kyle: Good job, kid.

Rachel: You too. So, what do you say we give up on the music store for today and that we're clear?

Kyle: Yeah. Let's do that.

Sarah looks around the room.

Sarah: I think the only way is forward now.

The three go through another set of doors then through some more rooms.

Kyle: Now that looks like something.

Kyle comes up to a crawl space in the walls.

Rachel: Following you two.

Kyle squeezes through then Sarah and Rachel. Kyle and Sarah duck under this pipe and keep going until they hear something break. The two look over and see that the pipe broke and Rachel stared at it for a moment and they stop moving, looking towards the wall. They could hear a noise and then a roar, before there was a crash and a Bulker bursts through the wall and grabs Rachel.

Kyle: Rachel!

Sarah: Rachel!

Kyle and Sarah get out of the crawl space just as the Bulker tosses Rachel on the floor. Kyle and Sarah pull out their shotguns and fired at the monster.

Sarah: Leave her the fuck alone, asshole!

The Bulker starts coming at the two but they back away. Rachel throws a Molotov at it and it roars in pain then turns to her. The flames die down in it and more infected start coming at three. Sarah goes and shoots at them while Kyle shoots at the Bulker as it grabs Rachel, trying to grab her face until Kyle pulls out his Zeus Corps machete and slices at its arm, making it let Rachel go, then stabs it repeatedly, then in the head until it dies. Sarah runs over to Rachel and helps her up to her feet.

Rachel: Jesus Christ.

Sarah: You okay?

Rachel nods.

Kyle: That was too fucking close.

Rachel: Yeah...but we fucking kicked ass as always.

Kyle and Sarah chuckle a bit.

Sarah: We sure as hell did.

The three start to continue on.

Rachel: You guys okay?

Kyle: Yeah....that fight really twisted my back, though.

Rachel: Oh, don't worry, grandpa. Do you want your IB profin for your back?

Kyle: Ha-ha-ha.

Sarah laughs.

Kyle: Yeah, laugh it up, Grandma.

Sarah: Hey...you're the one with the back problems, apparently.

Rachel: Hey, wait. What if there's like two Bulkers on the other side?

Kyle: It'll be fine.

Kyle and Sarah move the couch out of the way then they open the door, their guns drawn and they look around to see nothing. The three continued on and they make it to another set of doors, before Kyle and Sarah move the couch that was barricading the door.

Kyle: All clear.

Rachel shuts the door behind them.

Rachel: Helluva fight back there, huh?

The three walk down the hallway.

Kyle: Guess it's not often for these people to get a Bulker around these parts.

Rachel: Abigail is going to lose her fucking mind when I tell her about this.

Kyle: She adjusting to Berrington well?

Abigail: Well, yeah, she's just waking up from almost a week coma.

The three walk through the kitchen area.

Kyle: That Dennis boy? He got a crush on her or something?

Rachel: Dennis? The one who patched her up? Or at least watched her? He's got a crush on Abigail?

Kyle: Uh...yeah. I've got a keen eye for these sort of things.

Sarah rolls her eyes.

Sarah: So he says.

Kyle: Yet it took us months in Midtown Manhattan to get together. I wanted to ask you out, but I thought there was thing between you and Blake.

Rachel: Who's Blake?

Sarah: Blake was Cassandra's older brother. He kinda had a crush on me....anyway, he got bit and uh....well, let's just say he didn't want to turn.

Rachel: Oh....

The three head up to this door and Kyle goes to open it but it only opens a few inches.

Kyle: Think you can squeeze through?

Rachel nods and goes through the door.

Sarah: See what it is? Rachel?

Rachel: Yeah.

Sarah hears something moving.

Rachel: Okay. Come on in.

Kyle and Sarah walk into the middle of the room and sees a dead body. Sarah hears a noise then looks over to see a Stitcher crawling towards Rachel.

Sarah: Rachel!

Sarah runs over to the Stitcher, puts her foot on its back and shoots it in the head.

Rachel: Thanks.

Sarah nods at her as Kyle comes up to Rachel.

Kyle: You okay?

Rachel: Yeah....

Rachel closely looks at the backpack of the dead body, recognizing it as Mikayla's backpack, along with the short hair. After recognizing a pair of broken glasses, she then looks over at the Stitcher and lifts its head up, revealing to be Andrew.

Rachel: Hey, guys....it's Andrew and Mikayla.

Kyle and Sarah kneel down to the body and look it over.

Kyle: Shit....I think you're right.

Sarah: Guess leaving Berrington wasn't a good idea for them.

Rachel sees a note at the table then she picks it up.

Rachel: "Berrington was a beautiful place...but after Laura died, and letting the people who...who murdered her back in, no one seemed to know what they're doing..."

Kyle and Sarah look up to see Rachel her holding a note.

Rachel: "We didn't want to be a part of what Kyle is going to do, so we thought it would be better if we tried on our own. We realized how dead wrong we were when we ran into a horde. Now we're both bitten. We've decided we're going to end our lives instead of turning. Please tell our family and friends back home that we're sorry. Tell Kyle he was wrong for telling us to leave. Love Andrew and Mikayla."

Sarah lowers her head and looks at Kyle, who sighs, before Sarah closes her eyes and shakes her head at this. Kyle and Sarah stand up and look back at Rachel as she flips the note to the back and reads some more.

Rachel: "I stabbed her in the head. Made it quick, but I can't take my own life. I'm so fucking scared. I deserve to fucking turn. Andrew."

Sarah places her hand over her mouth.

Kyle: Jesus.

Rachel: They'd only stayed if we hadn't, right?

Rachel sets the note down and looks at the bodies of Andrew and Mikayla.

Kyle: Well, let's...let's go get James and we can take these bodies back to Berrington.

Kyle pats Sarah's arm and they start to walk towards the front door.

Rachel: After I killed Laura, I thought Berrington would be in better hands with us....but after this...do you really believe these people will survive if we don't help them against the raiders?

Kyle and Sarah stop in their tracks.

Kyle: Yeah, I do. These people are not like us, Rachel. They've been living behind these safe walls for too long. They haven't seen what we've seen; lost what we've lost.

Rachel: Yeah, I know....

Kyle and Sarah share a quick look before Sarah turns to Rachel.

Sarah: What?

Rachel: Just thinking....back in Vegas, this past summer, Marcus wanted to help the people who were enslaved by the twins. We almost left Kayla and Savannah behind with that cult. Is this any different? Should they have kicked us out?

Sarah raises an eyebrow at this.

Kyle: Is now really a good time for this?

Rachel: We travelled across the entire country to bring me to Taker City, then after we travelled the country again to find a home....I thought after Moses, I wanted to leave these people to their fate; let them die or get captured, but after this...do you think we deserve to be here? With these people?

Kyle: Rachel.

Kyle walks over to Rachel and stands in front of her while Sarah was standing behind him.

Kyle: We all did what we've done. What we've had to do. There's nothing that could've helped these people or anyone else. I know you want things to be different, so do I, but there are some things you just can't change.

Kyle and Sarah stare at each other, before Rachel looks away then down.

Sarah: Look, we need to get these kids back home so we can bury them.

They look over at the bodies then start to head out. In Berrington, that night, Kyle, Shawn, James, Sarah, Cassandra and Caleb look over the map of all the traps they have build. Shortly after the meeting, later that night, James and Cassandra are sitting at the table.

James: There's just not a lot of time left.

Cassandra: I know. Everyone's on edge. Everyone is scared.

James: It's been two weeks, Cassandra. Do we even have an idea what we're up against?

Cassandra: No....we don't...but we always win.

James: Yeah, but at what cost?

Cassandra: James...we're going to come out okay with this.

James: Whatever we have to do to keep this place safe.

Meanwhile, in the Desipich house, Kyle and Sarah preparing the living room for a movie night.

Kyle: It took me a might long effort to find this.

Sarah: How long ago was this movie?

Kyle: Uh...well, it's 2042, so about forty-four years old.

Sarah: Damn....

Kyle: Anyway, you wanna go get Rachel?

Sarah: Yeah...

Sarah walks over to the little shed behind Kyle and Sarah's house and knocks on the door. Rachel opens the door.

Sarah: Hey....

Rachel: Hey, Sarah. What's up?

Sarah: We're about to watch that movie we were talking about earlier back at the hotel...you know if you still want to.

Rachel: Really?

Sarah: Yeah.....

Rachel looks down at the ground.

Sarah: You know; I know you feel guilty about Laura and those kids....but you need to remember; you did save my life.

Rachel looks up then smiles.

Rachel: I know....it's just....

Sarah: Things are shitty right now....but things will definitely get better for us, Rachel....but for right now; why don't we watch a movie and get your mind off of everything?

Rachel: Yeah...I think I'd like that.

Sarah turns, but then Rachel speaks again.

Rachel: Wait, Sarah...if I tell you something....If I do, you cannot tell Kyle or anyone else, okay?

Sarah: Rachel, I can't keep something from Kyle. He's my husband.

Rachel: Sarah, please. Promise me.

Sarah gives a compassionate look, then nods.

Rachel: Okay.

Sarah: I met someone. A boy.

Rachel: Okay....you met a boy. Is this a good thing? You know after Moses?

Sarah: Kind of.

Rachel: What's "kind of" mean?

Sarah: This boy is a part of the group of raiders.

Sarah folds her lips.

Sarah: The same raiders that attacked you and Kyle in the woods?

Rachel: Uh...yeah...

Sarah: Rachel, I'm not trying to tell you what to do, but you should stay away from him.

Rachel: What? Why?

Sarah: Because he's an enemy. He could be a threat.

Rachel: I know, but—

Sarah: Rachel, you should've killed him.

Rachel: What? No, that's stupid.

Sarah: Rachel....

Rachel: It is. He didn't want to hurt me. He just wanted to hang out and talk feel like a teenager. His name is Hunter and his father is the leader of the raiders.

Sarah: Wes? Rachel, what are you thinking? If he's the son of Wes, that makes him more dangerous. He—he could've fed information to Wes.

Rachel: He won't. He doesn't want to fight. I don't believe that he does.

Sarah: Why do you care about his safety so much?

Rachel: Because he's being abused....by his father....and I know what that's like. Look, one year ago; you helped me. Now, I'm asking you to please help him.

Sarah sighs.

Sarah: Rachel, this is different. You weren't behind enemy lines. You were out there in the wasteland with us.

Rachel: Yeah, and you remember how Kyle almost killed me. Abigail was a part of the Reapers. Moses was a part of the Ravagers....and....Kyle was a Zeus Corps Soldier....Sarah, please....

Sarah: Rachel, don't let your feelings cloud your judgement, okay? It could get you killed.

Sarah walks away as Rachel looks down, before she follows Sarah to their house just as Kyle finishes setting up everything. Shortly afterwards, Kyle, Sarah and Rachel sit on the couch, before Kyle starts the movie.

Rachel: What is that? An animated castle?

Kyle: Uh...it's the company who distributes the movie.

Rachel: Distributes?

Kyle: It's a fancy word for releases.

Rachel: Ah....

A few minutes later, the movie goes by as Rachel sits up, obviously invested and interested.

Rachel: Okay, what's with the crazy grasshopper? The one that acts like a rabid dog?

Kyle: Uh...it's like a scare tactic to intimidate the ants.

Rachel: It is a scary fucking tactic!

Afew minutes into the movie, Rachel has fallen asleep, resting her head onKyle's shoulder. Kyle laughs, before Kyle carries Rachel up to the extra guestroom and places her into bed.

Kyle: Good night, baby girl.

Kyle gets a brief flashback of when he put Roseto bed, before snapping himself out of the memory. In the streets of Berrington, Shawn is on the porch smoking, when Kayla comes out behind him.

Kayla: You know, if bullets won't kill you, cancer will.

Shawn scoffs.

Shawn: Want one?

Kayla: Eh....why not?

Kayla sits next to Shawn as he offers his cigarette. Kayla takes the cigarette and smokes it.

Kayla: I don't like Savannah seeing me smoke. Trying to be the best influence of a big sister, you know?

Shawn: I hear that....

A brief moment as the two look out into the night, before Kayla finally speaks.

Kayla: Worried about this fight we're in.

Shawn: Think we'll loose?

Kayla: No. This is more of your thing, Shawn. You can do things that—that just scare the shit out of me.

Shawn: How do I do that? How do you think I do these things?

Kayla: You're a brother, Shawn. It's—it's not you looking out for James, but all of us. It's—it's the hard shit. The scary shit. It's how you do it. It's strength. You're a big brother to a lot of people here.

Shawn: To you, too?

Kayla smacks her lips, before looking at Shawn.

Kayla: No. You're something else to me, Shawn. You have been for a while.

After looking into each other's eyes, Shawn and Kayla share a long passionate kiss. After the kiss, the two lean into each other's forehead.

Kayla: I've wanted to do that for a while.

Shawn: Yeah....

Kayla: Yeah...

Shawn and Kayla kiss again, before Shawn suddenly, thinking of Jenny, looks down and nods.

Shawn: I'm sorry. It's just....

Kayla: I'm not trying to replace Jenny.

Shawn: I know you're not....but this will help us both.

Kaylasmiles as the two share a kiss again. Later, Kyle is on the couch resting, just as Sarah walks up and kicks him awake.

Sarah: Get up and scoot over.

Kyle grunts, before sitting up and scooting over, allowing Sarah to sit with him.

Sarah: We haven't had a chance to really relax since we got here.

Kyle: Yeah...

Kyle takes his boots off and kicks his feet up.

Kyle: Fuck. It's good to have a house.

Sarah: Yeah, you're telling me.

Kyle and Sarah lean back on the couch pillows.

Sarah: Tired?

Kyle: Yeah...especially after fighting a goddamned Bulker.

Kyle sighs.

Kyle: Last two weeks, everyone is on edge. I'm just waiting for the inevitable attack.

Sarah: Are you on edge?

Kyle: Honestly....yeah....and I'm not normally....I haven't been this overprotective over a place since....well, since the beach settlement.

Sarah: You want to talk about it?

Kyle: Not right now. You want to tell me about your day?

Sarah: No. Same shit.

The two relax for a minute.

Sarah: You know there is a little something that could get our minds off.

Kyle: And that is....

Sarah: Hmm....

Sarah sits up and bites her lip, then leans in and kisses Kyle, becoming more intimate with each kiss.

Kyle: Sarah....

Sarah smiles.

Sarah: What?

Kyle: What are you doing?

Sarah: Well, it's just....you and I have been back together for a year and a half and we...uh...haven't had any downtime.....You know; we've slept under a metro, on a train bed....but now that we have a real bed....and plus, I meant what I said when you looked sexy earlier...and I was radiating a lot of horniness.

Sarah raises an eyebrow.

Sarah: Just saying; you know?

Kyle chuckles.

Kyle: Feeling horny all of a sudden?

Sarah: No, I'm just saying; you never when this fight is coming and people need to see you not on edge...

Sarah whispers.

Sarah: And if fucking you takes you off edge, then I'm willing to try it.

Kyle sighs.

Kyle: You're very persuasive, you know that?

Kyle then kisses Sarah over and over again as the two then begin making out. Later on, after having sex, Kyle and Sarah lie naked in bed.

Kyle: Fuck.....

Sarah: Yeah....my words exactly...

Sarah laughs, before lifting her head up and staring at Kyle.

Sarah: So...how do you feel now?

Kyle: Despite the sex, thank you by the way....still worried...I got like this before Kronos, but Sarah, I'm hoping I'm right about these people...about this community....I'm hoping we can lead them.

Sarah: We will....You will.

Meanwhile, while the next guest room next to Kyle and Sarah's room, Rachel is wide awake.

Rachel: I am never fucking sleeping over here again!
