Chapter 139 - A Successful Test

The hum of the reactor chamber was steady—reassuring, even. A low, constant rhythm that filled the lab with a sense of purpose. Gwen Stacy had come to know that sound well over the past few weeks. It was the sound of progress—the sound of their future.

Or so they hoped.

She adjusted her gloves and leaned over the control panel, tapping a few keys to double-check the containment readings. Vee Octavius was already suited up, her mechanical arms attached to her back, clicking softly as they shifted with her breathing. Each movement was smooth, almost too natural—like the arms weren't just assisting her anymore, but becoming part of her.

That was what bothered Gwen most.

"Everything's looking good on my end," Peter Parker said, peeking over his tablet, trying to sound confident but failing as usual.

Gwen smirked. "Don't spill coffee on the data again, Parker."

"Once. That happened once!"

Vee chuckled, though her eyes remained locked on the reactor. Her husband, Otto Octavius, stood beside her—his presence gentle, grounding. He was a stark contrast to Vee's ever-rising tension. Otto was warmth—the kind of person who could calm a storm with a smile.

"We've got this," Otto said, resting a hand on his wife's shoulder. "All those sleepless nights are finally paying off."

Vee sighed softly, leaning into his touch for just a second. "Let's hope so."

The doors to the observation area slid open with a faint hiss. Wanda Maximoff entered, her presence commanding as always, though there was a rare softness in her eyes today. This wasn't just a political visit—this was personal. Sokovia's future, her future, might rest on this success.

Trailing behind her, MJ Watson swept into the room like she was arriving at a red-carpet event, clutching Harry Osborn's arm.

"Ugh, it's as dusty as ever in here," MJ muttered, inspecting her nails. "Don't these people know I'm allergic to industrial lighting?"

Harry stifled a laugh, while Peter sighed in defeat.

Gwen grinned. "Hey, you chose to come, MJ."

"I came because my future husband's name is on the check that's funding this little science fair. And if this reactor thing is going to power my future penthouse, I need to see it work."

Otto chuckled, amused. He was one of the few who found MJ's attitude endearing rather than exhausting.

Vee, however, was tense. The arms shifted behind her, twitching slightly, and Wanda noticed.

"Let's do this," Vee said, her voice low.

Everyone took their positions. Vee stepped toward the reactor, the arms extending with precision, each limb moving independently as they calibrated the core's magnetic containment field. It was a ballet of science and steel, and for a moment, Gwen forgot her worries.

The core began to glow, faint at first, then brighter—a sun being born in the center of the room.

"Containment holding," Peter muttered, his voice tight.

"Magnetic field stable," Gwen confirmed.

Otto watched his wife with pride. "That's my girl."

Vee smiled—but it was brief. Her eyes were sharp, focused, but there was something else there—something Gwen couldn't place.

The arms tightened ever so slightly around her body. Not aggressively—almost protectively.

Fracture's voice slithered into Wanda's ear, emerging from her shoulder briefly in that familiar symbiotic mass.

**"Do you see it now? They are not just tools. They whisper to her. They feed on her mind."**

Wanda's jaw tightened. She said nothing, but she saw it too.

"Plasma injection steady," Vee said, her voice stronger. "We're stabilizing."

And then—it happened.

The fusion core stabilized. The energy was held perfectly, like a small star contained within the chamber. A miracle of science realized.

The room erupted into applause.

"Holy shit," Peter whispered.

Otto grinned, pulling Vee into a quick embrace. "You did it!"

MJ raised her glass of champagne—because of course, she brought champagne to a fusion test. "To progress… and penthouses powered by science."

Harry laughed, pulling her close. "You're unbelievable."

MJ smirked. "That's why you love me."

Gwen clapped, but her heart was heavy. She looked at Wanda, who had that same distant look.

The arms didn't relax.

Even though the test was over, they stayed tense, clutching Vee just a bit too tightly.

The team gathered afterward, celebrating with drinks and laughter. Vee was smiling more than Gwen had seen in weeks, but there was an edge to it.

Otto sat beside her, his hand over hers. "We made history today."

Vee leaned against him, for a moment just his wife—not a scientist, not a genius—just a woman with the man she loved.

MJ sat nearby, dramatically adjusting her dress.

"If this goes public, I want to make sure my name's mentioned—'Mary Jane Watson, Future Osborn, Witness to History.'"

Gwen laughed. "You're impossible."

MJ smirked. "And you love me."

"Yeah… you're my bitch."

Later, Wanda and Gwen stood near the observation window, looking down at the reactor core as it slowly powered down.

"She did it," Gwen said, though her voice was tight.

Wanda nodded. "But the arms… they're not letting go."

Gwen's eyes narrowed. "I noticed that too."

Fracture appeared again, briefly, like a shadow wrapping around Wanda's shoulder, voice low.

**"The victory blinds them. But you see the truth. The arms will take her. Soon."**

Wanda's eyes glowed faintly red. "Not if we reach her first."

Gwen exhaled slowly. "Then we stay close. We keep her grounded. We can't afford to have something happen to Vee with your plans for her."

Wanda nodded. "Because if she falls… she's going to hit hard. But don't worry, Gwen, we will be ready just like we always are."
