"I still can't believe you convinced me to travel to the North Pole," said Suki, who wasn't wearing white and red makeup or the clothes of the Kyoshi warriors, but rather casual clothes.
"What can I say? The Sokka charm is irresistible to babes!" boasted Sokka, flexing her arms to show off her muscles.
Unlike his "canon" counterpart, the warrior had a toned physique, so his gesture highlighted his arm muscles. If he could, he would strike poses, but flying on Appa's back prevented him from doing so.
He could stand and jump, but he was wary of how high the flying bison could reach, so he was reluctant to move around much while traveling above it.
Suki looked at Sokka, swallowing saliva as her mind filled with impure thoughts. However, she had been trained to keep a neutral expression, so she simply averted her gaze to Katara, who was making smooth movements with her hands.
The waterbender's actions affected the surrounding clouds, drawing them to her. Meanwhile, Aang, the Avatar, had been meditating on Appa's head for several hours, worrying about Suki, the newest member of the group.
"Are you all right? It's the first time it's taken this long," Suki asked Katara in a low voice. Katara stopped her movements, interrupting her attraction to the clouds. Instead of getting upset, she simply replied,
"He hadn't immersed himself so deeply in meditation because he wanted to interact with you. From what he told me, when he meditates, he can travel around the world spiritually. Who knows where he is now? He seems to use that ability a lot to interact with Sage Shisui," Katara replied before pulling a manuscript out of a nearby bag.
These were notes that Shisui had left for her. She had been studying them since the day she received them. Aang had also been learning with her and advancing quickly in waterbending. However, Katara did not feel jealous of this.
Shisui had warned her not to compare herself to the Avatar because, essentially, he was merely retrieving knowledge he already had. Thus, with each generation, learning the elements became easier.
This was Shisui's hypothesis, especially since the Avatar had many past lives to serve as guides in times of need, saving one from taking many detours on different subjects.
Shisui also made Aang realize that everyone has a proper "rhythm" and that, as a Waterbender, he should find his rhythm or "flow." He should not concentrate on complex hand movements and incredible skills, but rather find his flow and attune himself to the element.
The sage told Katara that the best she could do was step outside the rigid framework imposed by the kata and learn from everything. She should be useful and discard the frills.
Katara then embarked on a path that exploited all her barely used talents. Although there were waterbenders at the South Pole, war and the North Pole's custom of isolating women from useful waterbending knowledge, except for healing, had greatly limited them.
Shisui knew that if he had not been born, Katara would have become the best Waterbender of her generation. However, "canon" history made her too prudish. The Sage determined this was due to a certain sleepy spirit's inability to devise realistic plots.
"Sometimes I get jealous. Aang can go anywhere, and only a few people notice him.... Imagine the possibilities! He can scout a lot of enemy intelligence!" Sokka ignored the fact that the girls had initially misunderstood him and were ready to teach him a lesson until he finished speaking.
"The benders have a lot of good things in their hands," Suki commented enviously. However, she was content with her power and ability because, despite lacking an element, she could defeat many who did wield this power.
"You shouldn't feel bad. Shisui says that anyone can do amazing things if they put their mind to it. Like Sokka! Look how he defeated Unagi." Aang awoke from his meditation and responded to Suki's words as a gust of wind lifted him and carried him toward Katara. He sat down next to her.
"Like that so-called energy giant you mentioned?" Katara asked, interested in this aspect. Meanwhile, Sokka's mind went to another matter.
"Or can you impregnate someone with your energy? Would it feel good to do that?" the warrior wondered, touching his chin as he immersed herself in his thoughts. He instinctively shook his head, avoiding a stream of water thrown by his younger sister.
"This... yes, Sokka, yes." Aang didn't know how to respond, so he just agreed with his friend before looking at Suki.
"I talked to my past lives about those ideas. Some of them thought they were viable, while others didn't. Kyoshi seemed sad that she didn't know she could have had children." When the Avatar mentioned that last part, he scratched the back of his bald neck while his companions burst out laughing.
"So, did you see anything interesting?" Katara asked, causing Sokka and Suki to turn their attention to the Airbender.
Ever since Aang told them about Shisui's fight against the legendary Kraken, they had become even more interested in the Avatar's spiritual journeys. Whether it was riding the dragon Roku or meeting a strange owl, he would narrate everything he experienced on his journeys when he returned.
"I saw how Shisui got to the North Pole. It was eye-opening." At this point, Aang became serious, beginning to explain what he saw and focusing on three important things.
First, a person controlled a man to chat with Shisui. This ended with the Sage purifying and saving the victim's life with Azula, Petra, and a white-haired woman's help. Katara had told Aang about this woman, whom he recognized as Yue.
He told them about the water dragon and the weather changes the Sage had caused. Katara's blue eyes sparkled with interest as she listened, wishing she could reach that level of skill one day.
But what impressed Aang the most was that Shisui repeated his actions at the South Pole, filling the North Pole with flowers. After narrating everything he had observed, the group fell silent.
"That guy is going to be a father? Can you imagine his daughter being a mini Shisui?" Sokka asked jokingly, but he instinctively squeezed the spear made from Unagi's bones tightly.
"Looks like I need to keep practicing. I don't expect to achieve sudden enlightenment or anything, but bringing flowers to the village should be something I can do, right?" Katara declared before looking harder at the manuscript Shisui had given her.
She had felt this urge before, but the fact that she could bring greenery to the South Pole encouraged her the most. Suki noticed both brothers' reactions and just shook her head before leaning back and looking up, relaxed.
"You should get some rest. We'll be arriving at the North Pole soon." One of the things we learned on Kyoshi Island is how to balance training and rest.
If you work hard, study well, and eat and sleep a lot, stress won't overwhelm you. I've noticed that you've been tense. Wouldn't it be better to pause, look at the sky, and calm your mind? You won't accomplish much in that state," Suki said, making Katara, who was about to train, and Sokka, who planned to get very little sleep that night, watch her.
"We have a legacy of hundreds of years. Strong people have emerged among us. That is the thought of one of those Kyoshi warriors. Her name was Uranai. Seeing the siblings' confusion, the Kyoshi warrior explained the origin of her previous sentence.
"That's a good thought. I remember when I was feeling confused, my master, Gyatso, would make me rest. We would even make desserts or joke around. Sometimes, we would do both." Aang recounted with some melancholy, but instead of looking sad, he smiled.
"So, how about we play Pai Sho? My mom taught me, and I have a board lying around. My mom wouldn't let me take her special White Lotus token, but I don't know why," Katara suggested, putting the manuscript away. She was ready to relax for a while.
Thus, they spent the rest of the afternoon and part of the evening having fun together.
...
The next day, the group traveling on Appa's back picked up the surges of spiritual power created by Yue. Considering that they were only a few hours away from reaching the North Pole, Aang decided to ask Shisui what had happened. He went back to meditate.
Aang's spirit easily detached from his body, as he had gained control of this Airbender ability. The Avatar quickly traveled toward Agna Qel'a, which was surrounded by the power of Tui and La. However, these beings did not stop such a transcendent figure.
Sensing Yue's energy, Aang approached the palace and arrived at the throne room. There, he encountered the scene of the princess, nay, the new leader of the Northern Water Tribe, unleashing her power as she watched the rest.
"Oh? Looks like the Avatar is coming to celebrate my promotion, too!" said Yue, causing the councilors to look at each other dubiously. They were unable to see Aang and thought their new tribal chieftain was confused. Except for Pakku, who looked in the direction the Avatar was standing. He sensed that something was off about the place.
When Shisui waved to the air, the people, unaware of Aang's presence, felt uncomfortable. Was the Avatar present? Interestingly, Azula felt Aang's presence. When the fire ignited in her hair, she could see the vague outline of the young airbender.
"So that's what you look like when you use that ability!" Azula exclaimed, interested in Aang's spirit-like appearance.
"Those flames are quite special, Azula." He didn't know why, but he always felt uneasy around Azula. Now, seeing her covered in that strange fire, he felt a hint of fear.
He knew she couldn't hurt him in this state, so he knew it wasn't his spirit that was afraid. However, the princess's appearance was frightening, with flames covering her body.
Azula was terrifying! Then, Aang floated toward Shisui. The elder Yagoda seemed to sense something and looked in her direction. She wasn't as sensitive as old Pakku, but the Avatar's proximity allowed her to sense him.
"It seems that there is someone here," said Pakku. Seeing Ymysteriousagoda's reaction, he understood that it was neither an illusion nor a mysterious joke by the youth. The Avatar had made his presence known mysteriously.
"Hey, what were you going to do tonight? What brings you here?" Shisui's question caused those present to sharpen their hearing. However, it was a useless gesture for most of them; only those who could see Aang could also hear him.
The Airbender could have made himself visible to the naked eye, but it would have been an unnecessary waste of energy. Even though he was the Avatar, he was still human and could get tired if he overdid it.
"I felt spiritual waves coming from here several times. I thought something bad had happened," Aang replied. This caused Yue to blush slightly as she stopped using the power of the moon. It seems her outbursts had attracted the Avatar.
"It's okay, but when you arrive, remember to meet me," said Shisui, causing Aang to nod and return to his body.
"Phew, I'm back," Aang sighed, stretching like a cat.
Now it was time to wait a few hours. Avatar Aang was about to arrive at the North Pole. However, he had to take care of something closer to him.
"The best Avatar is Kyoshi. I mean, she created the island I live on," Suki said, staring into Sokka's eyes. He shrugged nonchalantly.
"Kuruk was amazing. People think he was a bad Avatar, but Aang told me his story. A lone warrior like him will always be cool, no matter what. I don't tell just anyone that," Sokka replied, making Katara roll her eyes.
"You're always like that! You hear about an awesome character, and you think he's cool. You always say someone is cool." Katara said to her older brother, who, instead of being annoyed, smiled.
"As the ancient Avatar Kal-Ken, who was born among the Sun Warriors, said, 'It is because of hope that we must go forward,'" Sokka said, though he didn't provide any context. Aang, who was about to mediate the discussion between his companions, paused before nodding to his friend.
"It is because of hope that we must go forward."
