Chapter 10 - The Forgotten Gate

The shard's glow dimmed as Jax pressed forward, his pulse still thrumming from the battle. The labyrinth had grown silent, but not empty. It never was. The walls whispered—fragments of lost voices, echoes of forgotten choices. His grip tightened around the crystalline fragment, its energy humming against his palm like a heartbeat.

Two shards recovered. Unknown pieces of a puzzle that spanned beyond time.

Ahead, the path twisted, shifting as the labyrinth reconfigured itself. It was alive in its own way, a sentient enigma bound by rules older than the stars. Jax had learned that movement was never random. It tested, it guided, and sometimes—it warned.

A faint tremor rippled through the stone beneath his boots. A change.

Jax's gaze swept the corridor. The walls, once jagged and worn, now gleamed with unfamiliar markings—ancient script, pulsing faintly with indigo light. Not just symbols. Coordinates. A map buried within the labyrinth itself.

He exhaled sharply. "Finally, something useful."

Stepping closer, he traced a finger over the glyphs. They reacted, lines shifting, reconfiguring beneath his touch. His mind raced to decipher their meaning. The labyrinth was vast, but patterns always emerged. A seeker had to see beyond what was given.

Then—there.

A convergence point. A destination.

The Forgotten Gate.

The name surfaced from the depths of his memory, whispered in the Archivist's records. A place beyond the known corridors of the labyrinth. A threshold where lost paths converged. If there was a way to unravel the true nature of these shards, it would be there.

A low vibration resonated through the air. The markings flared once—then went dark.

Jax took a step back. "Well. Guess that means I'm on the right track."

He turned toward the shifting corridors. The labyrinth never made anything easy.

Time to move.

The path wound downward, spiraling into unseen depths. The air grew colder, tinged with a metallic scent. The silence pressed in, thick and waiting. Jax kept his rifle ready, senses honed for the inevitable.

The first sign of danger came as a flicker. A distortion at the edge of his vision.

Then—movement.

He barely had time to react before a figure emerged from the dark.

Not an enemy.

Not quite a friend.

But a guardian.

Clad in armor that shimmered like liquid obsidian, the being stood motionless, its hollow helm fixated on Jax. No eyes. No breath. Only presence. It carried no weapon, but the energy rippling from its form was unmistakable. A sentinel of the labyrinth.

Jax exhaled, steadying himself. "You blocking my way, or just standing there for dramatic effect?"

The guardian did not respond. Instead, it raised a hand. Not in aggression—but in challenge.

A test.

Jax had faced these trials before. Battles against constructs of forgotten civilizations, trials designed to judge those who sought the secrets buried here. This was no different.

The shard in his grip pulsed.

"Alright," he muttered. "Let's see what you've got."

The guardian moved.

Faster than humanly possible, closing the distance in a blink. Jax barely dodged, twisting as the air sang with kinetic force where the strike should have landed. He rolled, leveling his rifle and firing two quick shots. Energy seared through the corridor—only to distort and dissipate against the guardian's shifting form.

No effect.

Jax adjusted his grip. "Figures."

The guardian lunged again. Jax met the strike head-on, pivoting at the last second. His fist connected with the construct's side—not to damage, but to disrupt. He felt the shift. A resonance between the guardian and the shard.

It wasn't just an enemy.

It was part of the labyrinth.

A key to the gate.

Jax's mind worked fast. Weapons wouldn't break this fight. Understanding would.

He shifted tactics, dodging another strike while focusing on the shard's energy. The glow pulsed in time with the guardian's movements. A pattern, an echo—two pieces of the same design.

He had to synchronize.

Let the shard guide him.

Breathing deep, Jax closed his eyes for a fraction of a second. The labyrinth hummed around him. The guardian struck again—Jax moved with it, mirroring the motion, not resisting.

Light flared.

The impact never came.

Instead, the guardian halted, its form flickering, dissolving into streams of energy that coiled around the shard. A final pulse—then silence.

Jax opened his eyes.

The path ahead opened.

The Forgotten Gate awaited.

The chamber was unlike any other.

A vast expanse of obsidian and shifting light, the walls lined with crystalline spires that pulsed with unknown power. At its center—an archway, carved from a material older than the stars. Its surface shimmered, rippling with the echoes of unmade possibilities.

The Gate.

Jax approached slowly. The shards in his possession pulsed in unison, their glow feeding into the archway's silent hum. He had found the path.

But the real question was—

Where did it lead?

Jax placed a hand against the surface.

The labyrinth had tested him. The void had tried to unmake him.

Now, the gate would decide.

The moment his palm met the stone, the world fractured.

A surge of energy erupted, pulling him forward.

And reality shifted.
