Chapter 190 - Chapter 190: Young Isabella The Diplomat

Anton had grown tremendously over the years. He was the spitting image of his father when he was that age. His hair had remained short due to the uniform standards at the military academy, but it was wavy and lush nevertheless.

"You summoned me, Father?" Anton asked in a weary tone. He had not been informed as to why he was summoned. Before coming to them, he had been diligently studying some historical texts that Marshal Bessières had recommended.

Victor smiled almost evilly and replied, "I did indeed, son. I would like to introduce you to Sir Matteo, an envoy from the Green Viscontes, as well as the daughter of Prince Alphonse Visconte, Lady Isabella."

Anton gave a slight nod to Matteo and approached Isabella. He delicately took her hand and offered a small kiss on the back of it as he introduced himself. The language barrier was not a big issue for Anton. Many of the ancient texts of the Christian faith were in Zandarian, so he had learned a few basic phrases. If the conversation were to delve deeper, he would need a translator to assist him.

While the two young people were exchanging pleasantries, Victor could not help but smirk, muttering to himself. "That little charmer. I see Sebastian has taught him well."

Shortly after the two young people introduced themselves, Victor began to explain why Anton was summoned. "The reason you were summoned was due to Lady Isabella wanting to meet you. Given that this deal included the futures of you both, it makes sense for you to be present when hearing this."

Anton understood what Victor meant; he was referring to the fact that this young lady could potentially become his wife, and as such, his presence for this was important. The translator who was assisting Sir Matteo shifted next to Anton to help translate the conversation between his father and Isabella.

Isabella had everyone's attention as she began to propose terms for this alliance between the two realms. "As Matteo stated, my father has offered exclusive trade rights, a military and defensive pact, plus my hand in marriage. Although it is lacking in an offer, I believe I can sweeten the deal so that it is more suitable for you."

Victor raised an eyebrow; he could not tell if she was being overconfident or sincere in her words. It would take a decent amount to sway Victor to join their war. In spite of that, Victor signalled for Isabella to elaborate further on the deal.

"To make the deal more appealing to you, my Father will allow you into the family vault where you may select two treasures. Additionally, we will bestow the rank of Grand Duke upon you and grant a manor within the capital. Finally, I will remain in Hannover as your ward until it is time for mine and Anton's wedding. I will learn your language, customs and history."

These were far better conditions than their original offer. Matteo was sweating bucketloads as the princess offered such grand conditions. Two family treasures were a steep ask for the Viscontes; they held many valuable treasures, including holy relics, and some items were heirlooms that had been inherited for centuries.

Offering a manor in the capital was also a big ask; many nobles were clawing at the chance to have a residence in the capital. Residing in the capital meant being close to the Vatican City. A place that was similar to the one in Victor's previous world. Being near the headquarters of the Christian faith was beneficial.

What Matteo was most nervous about was Isabella becoming a ward of the Kingdom of Luxenberg. Her father was very protective of her since she was his only daughter. For her to move to another continent would drive the Prince mad.

Victor grinned and began to question Isabella. "That was mighty impressive, Lady Isabella. Those terms are far better than the previous ones offered. However, are you able to truly offer these? Once this is agreed upon, there is no going back. I respect your confidence, but be careful to offer things you can not give."

Isabella did not take a moment to think. Her eyes showed no sign of wavering as she confidently stated, "I swear upon my family's honour that these conditions will be fulfilled if your army supports us. Keeping me as a ward will be my father's assurance; if he refuses to meet these conditions, you may imprison me."

Bold words from Isabella had Victor beside himself. Every subtle challenge he threw at Isabella, she calmly dealt with. She was an impressive young lady. Victor was overjoyed to have such a lady as his future daughter-in-law. Even Anton could not hide his admiration; she was the most impressive peer he had ever seen.

"Very well, Lady Isabella. I shall send messages to my Generals. My army and fleet will muster here, and when we are fully assembled. We shall set sail for Zandar," Victor said in a cheery tone.

Matteo was glad a deal was struck, but it was hefty price. In saying that, if the war were finally won, then the price would be worth it.

With the deal agreed upon, Sir Matteo and Victor wrote up a contract so that there was proof of the agreement. Victor stamped his seal at the bottom of the contract, while Sir Matteo and Lady Isabella signed their names next to it.

The ink quickly dried, and now the deal was set in stone.

Victor summoned General Scharnhorst and began preparations for his army to muster. The plan was for them to be fully prepared to set sail from Hannover in three months. Field Marshal Wellesley would lead this army alongside Victor. He was determined to once again set off for war.

In Victor's previous world, a legendary warrior king named Leonidas was renowned for his prowess. He led from the front, even in the face of death. Victor may not have been a legendary fighter, but he would not shy away. He would be with his soldiers when they marched to war. Why should any of his soldiers travel the world to fight if their king can not do the same?

The only thing Victor truly feared was the wrath of his wife, and she was sure to be pissed when Victor told her about going on campaign again.
