Chapter 20 - Chapter 20: Morning Assembly and Familiar Eyes

The grand assembly hall of the Royal Magic Academy was alive with chatter and nervous energy. Hundreds of first-year students in crisp white-and-gold uniforms filled the space, standing in neat rows according to their assigned positions. Towering pillars and enchanted banners depicting the kingdom's legendary mages adorned the walls, while morning light poured in through massive stained-glass windows.

Mei Lin stood toward the middle-back, her posture straight but her mind racing. In this new life, she was the young miss of the once-glorious but now weakest noble family on the continent — the Lin family. She had reincarnated into this world with memories of her previous life intact, and her goal was clear: restore her family's former glory no matter what it took.

The headmaster, an elderly man with a long silver beard and flowing robes, stood on the elevated platform. "Welcome, new students, to the Royal Magic Academy. Here, talent and hard work matter more than bloodline… though never forget that bloodline still carries weight in our kingdom."

Mei's sharp eyes scanned the crowd. High-ranking nobles clustered at the front, surrounded by attendants. Among them was Princess Elara, who had shown interest in her during arrival. Then her gaze landed on a boy standing slightly apart from the main groups.

Luo Chaos.

He had sharp features, jet-black hair, and calm, calculating eyes. The heir of the Chaos Family — another fallen noble house. But something about him felt wrong. Or rather… too right. The way he observed everything with quiet detachment, the subtle way his fingers tapped in a rhythm that reminded her of Earth music. Her heart skipped a beat.

Is he… also a reincarnator? From the same world?

Before she could think further, a loud, arrogant voice rang out.

"Look at that. The Lin family actually sent someone to the academy. How desperate."

Cedric Harrington, the eldest son of Duke Harrington, stepped forward with a sneer. His group of high noble followers laughed behind him. "Your family is the weakest on the continent. Did you have to beg for scholarships, or did you sell what little honor you had left?"

Whispers spread through the hall like wildfire. Many students turned to stare at Mei with mockery or pity.

Mei lifted her chin, her red eyes flashing with cold confidence for a brief second. In her past life, she had dealt with worse corporate bullies. This was nothing.

"The Lin family may be at a low point," she replied clearly, her voice steady and carrying across the hall, "but we rise through strength, not empty words. Unlike some who only know how to hide behind their father's title."

Cedric's face twisted in anger. "You—"

The headmaster slammed his staff down, sending a wave of calming mana through the hall. "Enough! Save your rivalries for the training grounds. Now, proceed to your first classes. Remember: the academy will judge you by results."

As students began moving, Mei felt a gaze burning into her. She turned and locked eyes with Luo Chaos.

For a moment, time seemed to freeze. His eyes widened slightly in recognition — the same spark she felt. A faint, knowing smile touched his lips before he looked away and joined the flow of students.

Mei's pulse quickened. He knows. He definitely knows.

First Period – Magic Theory Classroom

Professor Alden's lecture hall was packed. Mei chose a seat in the middle row, away from Cedric's front-row dominance but visible enough to participate.

The professor projected a complex rune diagram. "Who can explain the flaw in combining Wind Burst and Flame Ignition without proper control?"

Cedric answered smugly and correctly, earning praise.

Mei waited. When the professor asked for advanced applications, she raised her hand.

"Miss Lin?"

"Instead of forcing the elements together, use the wind as a carrier to disperse the flame particles in a controlled vortex. With a Harmonic Pulse stabilizer, you turn potential backlash into wider area coverage and higher efficiency."

The class fell silent. Professor Alden looked genuinely impressed. "An excellent and innovative suggestion. Not from standard texts. Well done, Miss Lin."

Murmurs erupted. Cedric glared hatefully.

As class ended, Mei gathered her notes. A shadow fell over her desk.

Luo Chaos stood there, voice low so only she could hear.

"Your idea… it carried the scent of modern thinking. Fluid dynamics. Optimization. Things not common in this world's knowledge."

Mei met his eyes steadily. "And your posture during assembly suggested someone who remembers a world with tall buildings and machines."

They shared a silent understanding.

Luo smiled faintly. "We should talk properly soon, Mei Lin. Carefully. This academy is full of ears and knives."

He walked away, but the connection had been made.

Outside the classroom, Cedric's mocking voice echoed again, but Mei ignored it. Her mind was on two things: restoring the Lin family… and the mysterious Luo Chaos who might share her greatest secret.
