Chapter 63 - 63. Harran of the Sentinels

His name is Harran, a faithful knight of the Church of the God of Light, and one of the Sentinels, the most elite military group of the Holy Church, who do the most sacred work of their God, and he is one of the commanders of the force. He had just reached the outskirts of a town with the help of a spell to find out the whereabouts of the divine energy that had been felt by the Church, and as the Sentinels, it is their duty to find out where it had appeared from and seize it for the benefit of the Church.

While the hero families possess divine weapons of their own, there is no guarantee that they would side with the Church, or would work for the benefit of the God of Light. Even though the God of Light is the most worshipped deity of the Empire, the hero families are too varied to predict how they would react.

While they would take the side of humans, there isn't a guarantee that it would be to their benefit, and with their divine powers as the hero descendants and their possession of the Divine weapons that had been passed onto them by the heroes of the past, they were a force to be reckoned with, commanding the power of the highest authority in the empire.

Even the royal family is of a hero lineage as well, and are in possession of 4 different divine weapons, making them the strongest family in both power and political authority, and has allowed them to stay uncontested in their reign for centuries. Hero descendants are also not allowed to fight against each other as a matter of creed, as their continued existence is important for the protection of humanity.

All the other races have their own heroes as well, and so humanity can't lose their own heroes, and their only divine weapons. It would not only weaken them but make them inferior to the other races, and due to this the Church also makes sure that the relationship between the families stay cordial.

But even so, it wasn't like the Church had been staying idle all this time, in all these centuries they have been gathering power to ensure its stability. They increased their powers by creating it's own military, gathered the faithful and spread their teachings to the empire, brought in mages, alchemists, potionmasters, blacksmiths, especially those who were faithful to raise their might and make them stronger.

They also had the fortune of gaining divine artifacts that they discovered over the centuries, adding it to their arsenals and growing in strength. And with time the Church had become a competent and powerful force in the Empire, enough to endure against the powers of the hero clans.

And now they had managed to find another source of divine energy, one not in the hands of the hero clans, and they wanted to get their hands on it so that they will be able to use it to increase the power of the Church, and since they had seen the reappearance of the demons not too long ago, the Church has been in full alert to ensure that they are not taken by surprise.

And as one of the commanders, he will ensure that he fulfills the mission that has been given to him by the high priestess and find the source of divinity and bring it back to the Church. The group consists of 20 Sentinels, excluding him, more than enough to handle any kind of complications that should arise, armed with the highest grade of knightly armaments of the Church, white shining colour with gold and the symbol of the Church was shown all over the armor. They were also wielding halberds and longswords, which are made by the greatest blacksmiths of the Church.

Such high quality armaments are hard to come by, and none would be foolish enough to oppose them, lest they wish to die and go to the afterlife early. He looked at his troops and made sure that they were all there as he nodded to himself. He looked at the town in the vicinity as he knew that he can get the information he needs from there.

"Let's go. For the God of Light." Harran said with conviction as his soldiers grunted in affirmation.

"For the God of Light!" The Sentinels all chanted as Harran felt invigorated.

'We the Sentinels will fulfill this task.' Harran thought to himself as they marched.

By this time, Armaros and Fanah had managed to put distance between them and the town, making sure to keep away from the direction of the temple as well, as he didn't want to take any chances. He wasn't about to deal with any complications on his day off, and would like to have some peace for a time.

"Master, what do we eat?" Fanah asked him as she had realised that she didn't know what they would do.

"I have brought food for us, don't worry. I meant it when I said I wanted to take a break, that includes not hunting for food." Armaros said to her as she felt grateful for that.

"Are you certain that ignoring that is wise?" Fanah asked him as she was worried about it.

"I am not about to risk anything by going in that direction. I don't even know how to remove the spear from me, and I think it might be the Church considering how publically the spell was used." Armaros said as she found logic in that.

"Do you think they are here for the divine spear?" Fanah asked him as he snorted.

"You are a former knight. What else do you think they would be here for?" Armaros asked rhetorically as he was amused at the question.

Fanah stayed silent at his words as it made sense to her, as a divine weapon is a highly coveted thing, especially if it's not been claimed by a God. Unclaimed divine weapons are things that garner the greed of the various races. It will make you a legend, just for owning the weapon, and might also make you a very powerful fighter in accordance to the type of divine weapon it is.

"And if the Church were to find us?" Fanah asked him as she looked at him.

"Then we flee, but if we can't then we will fight." Armaros said to her in a flat tone.

"The knights of the Church are powerful warriors, and will have greater numbers as well, they would most likely win. They might kill us to get the weapon." Fanah said to him.

"You believe that the knights would kill someone for a weapon?" Armaros asked her as he looked at her.

"For a divine weapon, the lives of two humans won't be much of a price. Besides, they would be doing this for the Church and their God." Fanah said to him seriously.

"Hmm, well, at the very least, I know that I can count on you to fight with me." Armaros said as he turned to look at her.

Fanah blinked when she heard that, not having expected to hear something like that from the young man, though a part of her felt glad at the confidence with which he had said it. Though another part of her reminded her of the fact that she is his slave and she would serve him in spite of her feelings.

"I suppose I can act as a sacrifice." Fanah said as she knew that she couldn't exactly defeat a regiment of Church knights, not in her current state.

Armaros didn't say anything in response to that which confused her as she had expected him to agree with her words, but after a few seconds she decided that his silence was him agreeing to her, which she should've expected.

'I am a slave after all, so that should be expected.' Fanah thought to herself as she walked with him.

'A sacrifice huh.' Armaros thought to himself as he just walked towards their destination.

Inside him, the demonic scabbard beat once, very faintly, which only caused him to feel a slight discomfort as the spear was there, counteracting the energy of the scabbard, cancelling each other out.

'I just hope the spear and scabbard can just stay inside of me without fighting.' Armaros thought to himself as he felt a bit worried.
