Chapter 8 - A Worthy Performance

'The werewolf?!' Rera panicked inside her head.

To her and many other residents of the slums, this name has been the recent nightmare terrorising people.

According to rumors, this fearsome monster has a human's body shape, but unlike the average human, its body was alike a beast's. Its body towered over people, and its claws and teeth thirsted for human blood.

And although the Werewolf was said to hold the light of intelligence within its eyes, its appearance was more fiendish than any animal; so fiendish that it could scare the living daylights out of anyone who dared to see its face.

From the talk going around, the people who saw this creature's face would be stunned to the afterlife.

Although this rumor has only started a few months ago, it has terrorized and claimed enough people's lives for the children to be scared senseless.

"The werewolf? It's just a myth! What happened exactly?!" Koeth took Irwiz by his shoulders and shook him.

Irwiz only kept shuddering.

"Where is the boss?" as Koeth asked the question once again, his powerful voice seemed to fix the chaos of the entire room.

The children stopped being so scared as they all once again concentrated on Irwiz's small body.

This time, Irwiz's gaze seemed to focus and his body stopped shuddering. Then, he turned his head straight to Koeth, his pupils staring directly at the boy.

"The boss, the boss stayed behind." his quiet but firm voice sounded.

"No way..." a grimace appeared on Koeth's face as his expression couldn't help but turn for the worse.

"He told me to run while he stayed behind with the werewolf" Irwiz continued recounting the fairy tale he had just made up.

Around the room, several voices of exasperation and fear rang out. All the children seemed to understand the situation.

Most likely, the werewolf had once reaped the life of yet another resident of the slums. And this time, it was their protector and benefactor whose life had been claimed.

Now that they had no one's shelter to stay under in this cruel world, what will happen to them?

"What do you mean?! Did you see what happened to the boss?!" Koeth's voice was loud. Although it projected determination that allowed no room for refuting, some of the children couldn't help but notice the slight shaky undertone that followed it.

"No, I was too afraid upon hearing about the werewolf. I shouted for the boss to run with me but he only shouted for me to Run run and go away and run!!" around the end, Irwiz's voice became louder and louder as if he was repeating the scene of the boss shouting.

This time, the whole room had become quiet from Irwiz's voice.

Fear and anxiety had spread to the whole room again as some of the children fell on their asses to the hard ceramic ground that only had a slight bit of ragtorn fabric covering it.

Koeth, too, had stopped holding Irwiz by the shoulder.

He stepped back slowly, as he imagined the grim consequences.

As for Irwiz, there was no one around him anymore.

However, this time, a girl asked a question.

"How- how did the were- werewolf look like?"

Irwiz turned to look at the girl - Rera, and then he answered.

"The werewolf! The werewolf was this huge... huge beast with brown fur covering all its appearance!"

"It looked like a person... but its head was a beast's!" Irwiz's voice slowly descended into fear once again. Not only that, his mouth opened slightly and his pupils dilated, showing the perfect image of a person struck with fear.

Then, he covered his ears and shut his eyes tightly before going back into the huddled posture.

"The werewolf... it's the werewolf..." some kids uttered, and chaos returned back.

No one uttered a word. No one made any sound.

This silence continued.

No one had the energy to talk. After all, they were just about to go to sleep, after the hearty meal they had, but now the situation contrasted a bit too much!

Everyone huddled together inside the room. No one wanted to go out and look for the boss. After all, the fearsome werewolf was still possibly there, waiting for them.

As for Irwiz, he still stood huddled at a corner.

Inside his mind however, his thoughts had returned to normal. There was no more need for acting right now. He had performed his performance already.

Thus, he only had to wait now. Wait for what the system brings out to him.

As for how he made up the story of the werewolf, it was simple. His first time had been when he was with Erta, when the boy scaredly talked about the creature.

Since then, he had heard about this monster before, from both talk on the streets, to the children's scared conversations.

Irwiz thought it was a really good cover up.

As for people finding the corpse of the boss and the children realizing it wasn't a werewolf?

The chances were close to impossible. Not only was the place he killed far from here, corpses appearing in the slums was no rare matter.

It would probably be taken care of the next day, or even before then, sooner or later.

Right now, he needed just to get out of his torpor. The exhaustion caused from sprinting the whole way here.
