Max could hear the whispers moving through the crowd, but he didn't pay them much attention. Instead, his eyes returned to the bronze mark on his wrist. Between the marks he had collected outside Bloodstone City and the three hundred Bronze Marks he had just won from Greyjin, his total had climbed to roughly six hundred.
That meant he still needed about four hundred more.
As soon as this thought crossed his mind, Max slowly turned to look at Anna.
Anna noticed his gaze almost at once. She stared back at him in silence for a moment, and then her expression became extremely helpless, as though she already knew exactly what he was thinking.
"Don't look at me like that," Anna said. "I haven't forgotten our bet."
Max gave her a faint smile. "I didn't say anything."
"You didn't have to," Anna replied as she narrowed her eyes at him. "Your face is saying plenty."
