Chapter 202 - Settling into a New Routine

The first thing Haruto noticed after beginning his new job was that time had changed its meaning.

Back in university, days felt measured by classes, assignments, and the occasional late-night conversation under the stars. There had always been a rhythm to life—something predictable, something familiar.

But the observatory was different.

Here, time moved with the quiet patience of the universe itself.

The sun rose and disappeared beyond the horizon. Stars appeared and faded. Research continued whether he felt ready or not.

Haruto stood inside the observatory's main research room, surrounded by glowing monitors and endless records of celestial observations. The room was quiet except for the soft hum of machines and the occasional footsteps of researchers moving between stations.

He looked at the screen in front of him, studying a set of data.

A year ago, he would have stared at this information with excitement mixed with uncertainty.

Now, he was part of the process.

Not a student looking toward the future.

But someone already walking through it.

"Still here?"

A voice came from behind him.

Haruto turned to see one of the senior researchers standing there with a cup of coffee in hand.

He glanced at the clock and realized how late it was.

"Oh," Haruto said. "I didn't notice the time."

The researcher smiled.

"That's how you know you're becoming an astronomer."

Haruto looked back at the screen.

"Is that a good thing?"

"It depends," the man replied. "If you forget the stars are beautiful, it's a problem. If you lose track of time because you're amazed by them, that's different."

Haruto thought about those words.

A long time ago, he had fallen in love with astronomy because of wonder.

He hoped he would never lose that feeling.

Outside the observatory, Tokyo continued moving.

The streets were filled with lights, trains carried people home, and restaurants remained open late into the night.

Haruto walked through the city with his hands in his coat pockets, feeling both exhausted and strangely peaceful.

His phone vibrated.

A message from Aiko.

"Did you eat dinner?"

Haruto smiled immediately.

He typed back.

"Not yet."

The reply came almost instantly.

"I knew it."

A small laugh escaped him.

Some things never changed.

When Haruto reached Aiko's studio, the lights were still on.

Through the window, he could see her sitting inside, surrounded by paintings and scattered art supplies. Her hair was tied loosely, and her expression was focused as she worked on a canvas.

He opened the door quietly.

The small bell above it rang.

Aiko looked up.

"Haruto."

Her tired expression immediately softened.

"You're late."

He raised an eyebrow.

"That sounds familiar."

She smiled.

"Because it's true."

He walked inside.

The studio had changed since the first day she opened it. More paintings covered the walls now. More visitors had come. More memories had been created.

But somehow, it still felt like the same place.

Warm.

Comforting.

A place where he could breathe.

Aiko placed her brush down.

"How was your day?"

Haruto sat on the nearby chair.

"Long."

She nodded.

"Good long or bad long?"

He thought about it.

"Good."

A small smile appeared on her face.

"I can tell."

"How?"

"You look tired," she said. "But happy."

Haruto looked down at his hands.

He hadn't realized it.

But she was right.

The exhaustion was there.

The pressure was there.

But underneath it all was satisfaction.

"I think I'm starting to understand," he said.

"Understand what?"

"That dreams don't become easier after you reach them."

Aiko listened quietly.

"They just become different."

Her expression softened.

"That's true."

For a moment, they simply sat together.

No dramatic words.

No promises.

Just two people sharing the quiet after a long day.

Their new routine formed slowly.

Not all at once.

Not perfectly.

But naturally.

Haruto woke early, often before sunrise. He prepared for work, reviewed research notes, and traveled to the observatory.

Aiko spent her mornings in her studio, painting, organizing exhibitions, and meeting visitors.

Their schedules rarely matched.

Sometimes they saw each other only for an hour.

Sometimes only through messages.

Sometimes they were too tired to talk.

But they learned.

They learned that love wasn't only found in grand moments.

It was also found in small ones.

A message asking if the other had eaten.

A cup of coffee left waiting.

A quiet walk home.

A simple "I'm proud of you."

One evening, Haruto returned home earlier than expected.

Aiko was surprised when she opened the door.

"You're early."

"I finished my work."

She smiled.

"Should I be worried?"

He laughed.

"No."

They decided to walk.

The city was calm that night. The streets were decorated with soft lights, and a cool breeze moved between buildings.

They walked without a destination.

Just like when they were younger.

After a while, Aiko spoke.

"Do you ever miss university?"

Haruto looked ahead.

"Sometimes."

"Me too."

She looked up at the sky.

"It was simpler back then."

"Yeah."

"But…"

She glanced at him.

"I think I like this too."

Haruto smiled.

"This?"

She nodded.

"Growing. Even when it's difficult."

The words stayed with him.

Because that was exactly what they were doing.

Growing.

Not always comfortably.

Not always easily.

But together.

Later that night, Haruto stood on the balcony of his apartment, looking at the stars.

Years ago, he had looked at the sky and wondered if he could ever reach them.

Now he worked among people who studied those same stars.

The dream had changed.

But the feeling remained.

Aiko stepped beside him.

"You're thinking again."

He smiled.

"Maybe."

She looked upward.

"About the universe?"

"No."

She turned to him.

"Then?"

Haruto looked at her.

"About how strange it is."

"What is?"

"That we spent so much time trying to reach our dreams…"

He paused.

"And now we're living inside them."

Aiko smiled gently.

The city lights flickered below them.

The stars shone above.

Between them was everything they had built.

The childhood promises.

The difficult years.

The distance they overcame.

The future they were still creating.

Life was no longer a story waiting to begin.

It was already happening.

And for the first time, Haruto wasn't wondering where the path would lead.

He was simply walking it.

With Aiko beside him.
