Chapter 43 - Book 3 Prologue

Aurelia sat up with a gasp, chest heaving, eyes wide. She'd been dreaming; another place, another time. Bodies and rot, decay… lifeless eyes swarming the streets in droves, breaking into homes and tearing people limb from limb…

"C-Calm down Aurelia," She whispered, standing up slowly, swinging her legs out of bed and gritting her teeth, tail thrashing anxiously. "You're not her. You're not. C-Come on." So why do we still have to be connected; does she see what I see, too? I'm not her.

"Lynx's friend is in danger, by the way," She whispered, then shuddered, wincing and gritting her teeth… but she was already headed for the door, grabbing her coat and gun.

-

Maybe half an hour later, she stepped up to a warehouse and stared upward, hands on her hips. No sooner than she'd squinted and tried to get a good grip on the situation than the sound of rending steel reached her via the biting wind that left snowflakes clinging to her hair, lashes. Her eyes, though, were drawn to the second floor, and she took off, jumping as high as she could and just barely clearing it.

Kill the mercenaries, her inner compass whispered, and she obeyed- there were in fact two soldiers in front of her, yet to notice her; so fixated, on whatever would soon come from the end of the hall, they hadn't noticed Aurelia's feather-light steps as she landed. The second turned, as she shot the first in the head, but it was too late, and the wall behind both was painted with spinal fluid, blood and gore.

Just a moment later, where there'd been nothing, there was a flash of color, and Aurelia found herself winded, gagging, air gone from her lungs; her entire world had spun as a woman with fox ears slammed her back against a wall. When Aurelia could manage, she gritted out.

"Friend! Aurelia! Killed… ambush!"

Silence, for a moment, save for her snarling and the same wintry breeze coming through windows shattered long ago… and then the fox-woman was gone, and Aurelia gagged, falling to her knees.

There. You did well. Lynx's friend is safe.

The voice in her head went silent, and Aurelia winced, climbing to her feet and rubbing her bruised throat. "Ugh… my powers are just, the very best, aren't they…"

They are, though.

True.
