Chapter 38 - Chapter 38: Shadows and Strikes, Part 2

Kaiden's heart pounded in his chest as he staggered back, blood dripping from the shallow cuts and bruises that covered his body. The wiry guard's daggers were like flashes of lightning in the dark, the gleam of their blades almost too fast for Kaiden to follow. The leader's halberd was a constant threat—heavy, brutal, and unforgiving.

They were closing in on him from both sides. Kaiden knew he was outclassed. He could feel it deep in his bones. His attacks, though quick, were insufficient against the fluid movements of the two elite guards. They had the experience, the flow, and most importantly, the strength and precision to match his every move. He wasn't using the Flow himself; not yet, not with full control. He had to rely on his instincts, his strategy, and his growing ability to adapt.

Still, he wasn't going to give up. Not yet.

Kaiden pushed off the ground and launched himself back into the fray, moving with quick, unpredictable strikes. His fist shot out like a whip, connecting with the wiry guard's side. The man staggered slightly but quickly recovered, flicking one of his daggers toward Kaiden's face. Kaiden barely dodged, but the blade grazed his cheek, drawing a thin line of blood.

"Nice try," Kaiden muttered under his breath, wiping the blood from his cheek. "But not enough."

The wiry man's lip curled, but before he could respond, Kaiden pressed the attack. He spun around, striking low to catch the man off guard. The wiry guard blocked it just in time, but the force of the strike pushed him back a step.

"You think you can stop me?" Kaiden spat, his eyes flashing with intensity. "You've been underestimating me from the start."

The wiry man's eyes narrowed. "You're quick, but you don't have the control to back it up. You're nothing without the Flow."

Kaiden grinned, his teeth bared. "Maybe. But then again, I don't need it."

Adapting to the Pressure

The leader's halberd came crashing down, its weight a reminder of the difference in their strength. Kaiden ducked, narrowly avoiding the deadly arc. But the force of the blow sent shockwaves through the ground, and Kaiden staggered, his footing momentarily thrown off.

Dammit, Kaiden thought, gritting his teeth. I can't keep up at this rate.

His mind raced, his thoughts scrambling for a way to break the stalemate. These men were too strong, too skilled. If he tried to fight them head-on, he'd only end up dead.

So, he didn't.

Instead, he changed tactics.

Kaiden feinted left, pulling back with a swift dodge. The wiry guard tried to anticipate his movements, but Kaiden used that hesitation to his advantage. He thrust his elbow into the guard's ribcage, forcing him to stumble back.

"Where is she?" Kaiden demanded, panting. "Where is Elira? Tell me now."

The wiry guard, gritting his teeth, swiped at Kaiden with a vicious arc of his dagger. "You think you can just ask for that? You'll never know."

Kaiden barely dodged in time, the blade slicing through the air just inches from his throat. But he was adapting—faster now, his mind working in overdrive as his body responded instinctively. His vision cleared, his movements sharper, more precise.

His foot swept low, tripping the wiry guard as he overextended. Kaiden didn't waste time, landing a quick jab to the man's gut before spinning to face the leader.

"Tell me where she is, or I'll make you regret it," Kaiden hissed.

Fighting Through the Pain

The leader's heavy footfalls were deafening as he closed in on Kaiden, his halberd raised high. Kaiden didn't flinch, though his muscles screamed in protest. He was starting to feel the fatigue setting in, his body groaning from the constant strain. The wiry man recovered and lunged again, his daggers a blur of motion.

Kaiden dodged the first swipe but took a blow to the side as he tried to counter. Pain flared, but Kaiden gritted his teeth and kept moving. He wasn't done yet.

He needed more—he needed to adapt.

Focus, Kaiden told himself. He was fighting two trained killers, each one more powerful than he could imagine. But he was learning. He wasn't the same kid who stumbled into the colosseum a few months ago. He had learned from every battle, from every struggle.

This is just another lesson.

Kaiden darted forward again, this time feinting right before slamming a quick punch into the wiry man's side. The guard stumbled, giving Kaiden just enough room to backflip out of range of the leader's overhead slash.

"Tell me where she is!" Kaiden shouted again, his voice low, his patience running thin.

The wiry man finally sneered, his breath heavy. "I told you… you won't find her. Not if I have anything to say about it."

Kaiden's eyes burned with determination, but his body was nearing its limits. He could see the cracks in his defense. His strength was fading, but the fire inside him still blazed.

The Shifting Tides

Kaiden's movements began to slow as the pain from his injuries set in, but his resolve never wavered. He'd forced them back a few steps, but it was only a matter of time before they adapted to his tricks. The wiry guard's daggers glittered in the moonlight, their strikes growing more accurate. The leader's halberd was relentless, each swing a deadly promise.

But Kaiden wasn't fighting with brute force. He was fighting with adaptation. His mind flicked through every movement, every step. The wiry man's overconfidence was his weakness, Kaiden realized. He had to use that.

Kaiden darted to the side, allowing the wiry man to take the lead. As the guard's blade came crashing down, Kaiden sidestepped and brought his knee up into the man's chest. The guard gasped, the air knocked from his lungs, and Kaiden took the opening to land a vicious blow to the side of his head.

But the leader wasn't far behind.

The halberd swung again, its edge slicing through the air with deadly speed. Kaiden barely managed to duck, the blade grazing his shoulder. He staggered back, his body protesting every movement.

"Where is she?" Kaiden repeated, more desperate now.

The wiry man grinned, his lips curling into a smirk. "You'll never get it out of me."

End of Part 2

Kaiden's relentless drive to find Elira has pushed him to the brink. But as the two elite guards grow more determined, Kaiden's fight becomes a battle of not just strength, but wit. He's learning, adapting to the pressure, but even his best efforts may not be enough against foes who are just as relentless. The fight continues, and Kaiden's will to survive is tested like never before.
