Chapter 75 - [H:F.S.T.T.S] [074]

[Chapter 74: A Monarch Still Hidden In The Shadows.]

[Alternative Titles: A Song of Shadow & Fire.]

Last Time on Chapter 073 of From Shadows To The Spotlight —

"It means," he began slowly after coming out of the past and finding his words, "that before anyone in Hollywood gave a crap about who I was—even with Dad's name—I was just another guy doing stunt work and holding boom mics to stay afloat."

"After my first Hong Kong film, Legacy of Rage, I thought that was my big break. That I would become an overnight sensation in Hollywood action films like dad."

"But over here? All I ever got were rejections and dismissals from every major studio, audition after audition... nothing."

Now Continuing —

Shannon blinked, remembering the saddened voice of his brother on the phone, telling her how he had been sidelined and sometimes even discriminated against based on his race. "I remember that. You were pretty beat up about it."

"Yeah," Brandon said quietly. "I was barely scraping by with stunt work and getting roles as extras, I was this close to going back to china when I ran into Alex at The Midnight Draft."

Seeing her questioning look, he graciously explained, "it's a bar that his mentor owns and runs. Back then, he was still climbing too—doing second unit work, fixing scripts, special effects and all kinds of behind-the-scenes stuff."

"I don't know how, but we instantly clicked. Maybe it was our shared interests."

"Martial arts, film philosophy, action and stunt choreography—you should've been there, we'd talk for hours. When he found out I'd been sleeping in my car some nights, he didn't pity me. He just invited me to crash at his place, handed me a warm home cooked meal, and said, 'We'll figure it out.'"

Shannon looked sideways at her brother, her hard edge softening just a little.

"And then, a few months later," Brandon continued, a grin now spreading across his face, "he calls up the director of this action flick he's written and got approved for filming"

"Wait, wasn't your first movie in Hollywood Predator?" She asked stunned as she hadn't known about it.

"Yup, Alex called up the director and told him, 'Hey, I've got a guy. Will you let him read?'"

"Shannon, I'm not kidding when I say this, there wasn't even an Asian character in the script originally. Alex rewrote the script just to fit me in, creating a character based on my personality and quirks. And that's how I got the role of Steven which was my first proper Hollywood gig."

"Wait. Hold on." Shannon frowned. "He rewrote the script and created a role just for you??"

Brandon laughed, nodding. "Damn right he did. Said something like, Hollywood's full of cool guys with guns. Let's put one in there who actually knows how to throw a punch without making weird noises.'"

Shannon's lips parted in surprise, then slowly pressed together in a more thoughtful line. But she didn't stay quiet long.

"Still... maybe he did all that because you're Bruce Lee's son. Don't forget that name still means something—especially in China. Maybe he figured you'd help him tap into that market."

Brandon had a full belly laugh, the kind that came from deep in the chest and stomach, like a punch breaking through tension. His grip on the steering wheel loosened as he tilted his head back slightly, his amusement at her sister's word's rolling through him.

The idea that Alex needed him—for anything beyond friendship and loyalty—was so absurd it bordered on comedy.

"No, dear sis," he said under his breath, still chuckling. "Alex doesn't need me. He never did.."

Brandon didn't say anymore, his eyes remained fixed on the road ahead, but his mind drifted across continents—to back alleys in Hong Kong, secretive investment meetings in Shanghai, to private dinners hosted by government officials where Alex had been treated less like a guest and more like royalty.

There, Alex didn't walk in as an American director or martial artist. He stepped in like a sovereign—veiled in shadows, but no less powerful for it. He had been moving behind the scenes like a phantom, weaving influence into the very arteries of industries: media, tech, manufacturing, logistics, even defense.

He had been there when Alex shook hands with a steel magnate whose reach spanned six provinces, watched as officials and industrialists alike paused mid-conversation to listen when Alex so much as uttered a word.

His good friend had no official title, no corporate logos behind his name—just power.

A monarch hidden in the shadows.

Brandon exhaled slowly, the weight of the secret like a coin flipping endlessly in his pocket. He couldn't put into words, just how badly he wanted to tell Shannon all of it–every jaw dropping detail and then gleefully watch her turn red and shrivel up in embarrassment.

He could have told her how Alex's name opened doors in Beijing that even Hollywood couldn't dream of. How his influence in the southeast asian countries dwarfed even the whispers of power that very few people knew he held in America.

But that wasn't his truth to share. That part of his friend's life, that face of Alex Masters and the empire he had painstakingly built in the shadows—was locked behind a wall of loyalty and trust. And unless Alex chose to reveal it to her himself, it would remain sealed.

His gaze shifted to Shannon beside him—still ranting about Alex's sudden rise in Hollywood, about the way MONARCH seemed to appear out of nowhere and just climb the ranks with their gripping horror films, critically acclaimed art films, and collaborations with other major studios to create films like Jurassic Park, Star Wars and Titanic.

He really wanted to tell her that the Titanic wasn't any longer a collaboration between Monarch and 20th Century Studios as they had pulled out their investment and Alex had matched their capital to save the movie from production health and gained complete control over the movie.

But he restrained himself as that news was supposed to be a well kept secret between the two studios because Fox didn't want to lose face. Whereas Alex was holding back on revealing the incident later on to boost the popularity of the movie during the marketing phase to showcase his confidence in the film.

She kept talking about how Monarch has painted a target on their back by completely dominating the summer file with John Wick and The Lord of the Rings, and every conversation in every executive boardroom was about how to take them down for good.

Brandon let her talk, content to let the storm pass. Her voice was heated, her tone skeptical, but behind all that, he knew his sister. Her fire masked curiosity, maybe even intrigue, wanting to know more about his friend and to test him for his sake.

And objectively? She was stunning.

He could say it without bias. Years of rigorous martial arts training with their father had shaped Shannon into something that could rival elite athletes and runway icons alike. A core of steel wrapped in grace, with sharp cheekbones, lean muscle, and an aura that commanded space.

Her body was sculpted—not through vanity, but discipline—and she moved like someone always ready to strike or dance, depending on the need. Brandon wondered what it would look like—her and Alex.

A song of shadow and fire.

Of course, it wouldn't be that simple, as there were quite a few complications. Alex wasn't a man anyone could own—that much was clear.

His love life was.. unconventional. Monica had made that clear when Brandon met her, all elegance and open confidence, entirely unthreatened and open to the idea of Alex having more than one woman in his life.

She wasn't passive or submissive—just sure of herself, and of Alex's unwavering love and affection for her.

And Shannon? She was no wallflower either.

He smirked. The idea didn't seem so far-fetched now that he gave it some thought. Shannon had never been the type to accept less than what she thought she deserved. And Alex... Alex was the kind of man who invited challenges simply by existing.

His actions spoke louder than most men's declarations, his gaze alone capable of making seasoned executives sweat. And he didn't chase attention—he drew it, naturally, magnetically, like the gravity wrapping around you from a celestial body.

Brandon's thoughts flicked again to New York—specifically, that absurd skyscraper Alex had built right next to central park. It was the tallest in the Western Hemisphere, standing like a monument of his power and ambition, though very few people knew it was his. He was among the very few people whom Alex trusted with that kind of information.

And it wasn't just the tower; Alex had also snagged up a full block beside Central Park over the last year. Through proxies, through shell companies, using his influence and connections to make that impossible deal a possibility. A reality.

There was an obscene amount of Money involved, no doubt about it—but money alone couldn't make something like that happen. For that you needed clout, connections, and the kind of backchannel that allowed you to cut through red tape and ignore government bureaucracy.

His wealth wasn't one that screamed—but one that commanded. Silently in the shadows.

Personally, the most impressive thing to him was that all of it was built by Alex himself. No family fortune. No legacy. Just his vision and ruthless brilliance, forged from the same fire that made Brandon trust him with his life.

So, of course Brandon wanted to hook his sister up with a man like that. Who wouldn't?

But he also knew the risks. Wealth and Power like the one Alex commanded hadn't come without its price. He was the kind of man who, by simply walking into a room, shifted its balance, he had every executive of the biggest studios at the edge of their seats.

They either wanted to collaborate with him or completely ruin him, the kind of man whose enemies multiplied in the shadows, waiting for a single misstep. His friend had been holding off these hyenas bh dangling the sweet fruit of collaborative projects like Jurassic Park and Titanic in their faces.

But this year, Alex had clearly drawn a line in the sand, and now Studio MONARCH stood alone. While it still had allies–DreamWorks and Lucasfilm to name a few, it still didn't stop the wolves from coming after him. The smear campaign, launched on him using his long dead friend Michael, was merely the prelude to the oncoming storm Alex was about to step into.

But he wasn't worried for Alex; he knew that his friend would come out of it on the other side without even wetting his shoes. But anyone close to him—romantically especially—would have to live under that pressure, walking beside him in both admiration and peril.

Still, Brandon thought, casting another glance at Shannon as her lips curved into a knowing smirk, she'd never been afraid of diving into the deep end.

Maybe, just maybe, Alex needed someone like her too. Someone who didn't just admire him—but matched him.

Brandon's lips curled upward.

"Oh, this could be interesting," he muttered to himself quietly, but maybe he hadn't been as silent as he had imagined.

Because right after he muttered under his breath, she retorted about Alex wanting to use him for his own gain and this time run couldn't stay silent anymore. So he spoke up but he was careful not to reveal any of the secrets that he had thought of before.

Brandon's smile faded, just a touch. "You really think he only helped me because of my last name?"

"I think people don't do anything in this town unless it serves them," she said, her voice lower now. "Even Alex. Especially him.. after all, he's someone with a lot to lose."

The only sound for a moment was the wind rushing past the car and the rhythmic beat of the tires against the road.

Brandon didn't speak right away. He turned the car into the private driveway of the White Lotus, the ocean breeze kissing the hood of his '57 as they pulled toward a secluded parking area reserved for the restaurant's most elite patrons.

Obviously, as the co-owner Alex had his own space, a plaque engraved in polished brass. A.M.

Brandon parked and shifted into neutral. "Maybe you're right. Maybe my name would help him somehow in the future. But after all he has done for me, I wouldn't care if he asked me for a favor or two."

"Shan, I've seen how he treats people who can't give him a damn thing. Old crew guys. Extras. The guy who used to sweep up cables with a limp. He helped them too.. discreetly, not wanting to draw any attention to his philanthropy. No pats on the back."

He took a breath, his voice quieter now. "And when that prop gun misfired on The Crow… it wasn't the producers or the safety team that ran to check on me. It was Alex. He had double-checked that gun himself the day before. Said he had a bad feeling. Yet the accident still happened, but... I'm alive because of his instincts and his insistence on me wearing a vest that day."

Shannon looked away, her jaw tightening, she knew about the incident and was disgusted by as it was proof of the racial discrimination against asians. They had tried to kill his brother and would have even succeeded at it if it were not for Alex.

She wasn't ready to admit it, but something in her expression shifted. A flicker of guilt. A flash of reconsideration.

Brandon turned off the engine and pulled off his sunglasses, offering her a sidelong smile. "He's one of my closest friends, Shan. So yeah.. I'm gonna hear him out before jumping to conclusions like you. You coming or not?"

Shannon unbuckled her seatbelt, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. "I'm already here, aren't I?"

The siblings stepped out of the car, sunlight catching the gleam of the ocean and the sleek black finish of the 57'. They moved together — effortlessly in sync, two legacies of a legend, stepping into the orbit of another.

The White Lotus's glass doors slid open ahead of them, and with it, the promise of answers — and perhaps the stirring of something far greater.

-----------

~At The White Lotus~

The air was cool as Brandon and Shannon entered the grand lobby of The White Lotus, the glass doors sliding open with a soft whoosh behind them. Immediately, they were enveloped in a hush of refined elegance—a quiet that wasn't sterile, but respectful, as if the building itself understood the weight of conversations it hosted.

A poised hostess in an emerald qipao stood behind a minimalist white oak podium, her smile welcoming but restrained. "Good afternoon, Mr. Lee. Mr. Masters is expecting you." She gave a courteous nod to Shannon before signaling subtly to one of the nearby waitresses to attend to them.

A young woman in a soft cream blouse and tailored black slacks stepped forward with practiced grace. Her hair was swept into a neat low bun, a single silver pin gleaming like moonlight in the strands. She bowed slightly. "Please follow me to Room 9."

As they walked, the siblings passed beneath an arched hallway flanked by sculptural wooden beams—each one hand-carved with swirling motifs of dragons, phoenixs, other mythical creatures and lotus flowers. The soft trickle of water echoed through the space from a wide, curved wall that mimicked a waterfall—crafted from smooth stone and marble, its cascading rivulets catching the light like melted crystal.

Floor-to-ceiling windows lined the outer walls, revealing sweeping vistas of the Pacific Ocean, the afternoon sun glinting off gentle waves. Natural light flooded the restaurant, reflecting off polished hardwood floors and pale limestone tiles, casting leafy shadows from the potted birds of paradise and trailing vines nestled in every corner.

Elegant paintings graced the walls—blended styles of East and West: ink-wash landscapes beside modern abstract pieces, a visual harmony that spoke to the restaurant's global prestige and cuisine. The White Lotus had quietly made history as the first restaurant in the United States to earn a Michelin star—though you'd never hear the staff boast about it.

Here, excellence wasn't a prideful boast; but the natural state of their esteemed establishment.

The waitress led them to a quiet wing of the restaurant on the second floor, where private rooms branched off from a secluded corridor. Outside, Room 9, she paused beside a minimalist panel embedded with a single bronze bell. She pressed it gently, and a soft muffled chime sounded from within.

"Mr. Masters," she announced, her voice low and melodic. "Your guests have arrived."

A soft buzz followed from within.

The door slid open smoothly to reveal a serene private dining room. The far wall was entirely glass, offering a breathtaking, uninterrupted view of the ocean. A long, low table made of dark polished rosewood sat in the center, surrounded by a blend of plush armchairs and floor cushions, a subtle nod to both Eastern tradition and Western comfort. A faint scent of jasmine tea and sandalwood lingered in the air.

Alex stood at the far end, dressed in a tailored charcoal shirt with the sleeves rolled to his elbows, sharp yet casual. He rose the moment they entered, his face lighting up with genuine warmth.

"Brandon." His voice was low, steady, with that calm undertone that always seemed to command the room without effort.

"Alex," Brandon grinned, stepping forward as the two men embraced like brothers reunited after months apart. It wasn't stiff or formal—there was a familiar ease in the way their hands clasped each other's backs.

Then Brandon stepped aside, gesturing toward his sister. "You remember my sister, right? Shannon."

Alex's gaze shifted, and his expression softened just slightly as he took her in properly. They'd met in passing before—on a set, maybe, or during one of those after-party circuits where conversations were short and shallow—but never like this.

"Of course," Alex said with a polite nod and a hint of something more thoughtful in his eyes. "It's good to see you again."

Shannon gave a cool but respectful smile, her posture straight, graceful. "Likewise."

Alex motioned toward the table. "Please, have a seat."

As they settled in, the waitress entered silently behind them to pour cold, citrus-infused water into hand-blown glasses. Once she bowed and left, the door slid shut, sealing them into their pocket of sunlit privacy.

"So," Alex said, settling into his seat across from them, the view of the ocean casting soft light across his face. "Are you two hungry?"

Brandon grinned. "I could eat."

Alex chuckled lightly, and leaned back as he reached for the tasting menu. The low hum of waves beyond the window was the only sound for a moment—a moment heavy with anticipation, quiet truths, and the calm before whatever storm was still to come. He just hoped to weather this storm and not lose a good friend in the process.
