Chapter 73 - [H:F.S.T.T.S] [072]

[Chapter 72: An Heir To The Throne.]

[Alternative Titles: The Fifth Brick.]

Last Time on Chapter 071 of From Shadows To The Spotlight —

Her eyes glimmered with pride as her hands moved up to his shoulders again, thumbs digging into old knots from weeks of interviews and studio sessions. "The broader 13-to-34 age group makes up 70%, and we're seeing strong pickup from both casual and hardcore gamers."

"It's cutting across genre lines—sim heads, horror fans, even younger kids and older gentlemen are being pulled in by the Jurassic Park nostalgia. But what really ties them together is the experience and innovative gameplay."

"They're naming their dinosaurs—competing to see who can create the deadliest apex predator—and Mr. Freeman's voice narrating made it an instant classic. Ms. Shield's tour guide lines are loved by all."

"The old man's voice just has that gravitas." Alex nodded in causal acceptance.

Now Continuing —

She smirked. "The twist near the end has the forums are exploding. 'I wasn't ready for the raptor chase' is becoming a meme."

"Though there are a few complaints—the sim management's learning curve is considered to be kinda difficult for the simple minded fps shooter players. While some parents think that the FPS survival half of the game is too intense for their younger kids—but the feedback's still overwhelmingly positive. So we are in the clear."

"People are calling it a strong contender for the title of the Game of the Year. EGM is already flooded with letters demanding a sequel."

Alex's eyes gleamed with satisfaction. "And the press?"

Tasha leaned forward, cupping his head briefly before sliding her hands back down to his spine. "EGM gave it a 9.5 out of 10 — Dan Hsu called it 'a genre-bending masterpiece.' GamePro gave us a perfect 5, saying 'Dino Dynasty roars past Zelda as '98's king.'"

"GameSpot's Jeff Gerstmann scored it a 9.3, praising the hybrid of Bullfrog's sim design with id Software's horror mechanics. IGN posted a 9.4, and PC Gamer awarded the PC version a 92%, citing unprecedented depth and infinite re-playability."

She adjusted her position slightly, now massaging the back of his neck with slow, deliberate care. "We're averaging 93 to 95 across outlets, nearly neck-and-neck with Zelda's legendary 99."

"Next Generation ran a headline: Dino Dynasty: America's Jurassic Jab at Japan's Throne. They said Monarch—specifically, you—have thrown down the gauntlet against Nintendo and Square."

"GamePro even called it 'America's answer to Japan's dominance.'"

Alex's grin widened, the screen now forgotten. "That's what I'm talking about, Tash."

She leaned in, her breath warm against his ear, her voice a whisper. "And the players know it, sir. The community's alive. Teenagers are warning each other not to hire Dishonest guards. Players are modding in new dino skins, making tribute videos, and writing fanfiction."

"EGM's editors are whispering that we're a lock for Game of the Year. GameSpot's got daily update threads just tracking reactions. This isn't just a game anymore. It's become a cultural movement. And with this, sir, the analysts are claiming that M.I.G has successfully taken it's first step in carving out it's our fanbase in the videogame market."

As the Rolls Royce glided to a smooth stop in front of Studio MONARCH headquarters—glass and steel gleaming under the moonlight—Tasha's hands worked his shoulders one last time, grounding him.

Three million domestic sales projected, international markets roaring, and an empire at his back.

Alex's eyes gleamed, the TV's paused Leno interview forgotten. Tasha's hands worked his shoulders one last time, her touch grounding him as their car pulled into Monarch's lot.

Three million U.S. sales, maybe more, and the world eating it up—Dino Dynasty wasn't just a win.

It was the fifth brick in the foundation of his entertainment empire, and he was just getting started.

-----------

Alex hadn't expected anything more than silence and maybe a pizza alongside some cold wine when he walked in that night. The long hours spent promoting First Swing and the pouring over Dino Dynasty's statistics whilst still being driven back to his Bel Air Mansion had left his body sore and his mind simmering.

The Los Angeles skyline glittered through the floor-to-ceiling windows of Alex Masters' Bel Air mansion, a constellation of city lights that seemed to bow to the man who'd conquered Hollywood and now gaming. Inside, the dining room glowed under a crystal chandelier, its soft light dancing on polished mahogany.

The scent hit him first—ginger, garlic, something spicy and sweet dancing in the air like a seductive promise. Then came the visual: the dining table lit with soft candlelights, lined with platters that shimmered with familiar colors and textures.

Thai-style drums of heaven—his favorite. Hot and sour chicken noodle soup steamed in a delicate ceramic bowl. Butter garlic prawns, glistening. Tibetan momos arranged in tight rows drowning in a scarlet, menacing dipping sauce. Lamb curry, rich and deep red, carried the subtle bite of spice he loved.

Garlic naan puffed golden, just the way he liked it—thin, crisp and slightly charred on the outside, while still being soft and fluffy on the inside. There was also a bright seafood paella on the side that offered a lighter contrast to the rich lamb curry, and at the end of it all sat a flawless strawberry cheesecake, its glaze still shining under the candlelight.

It wasn't his birthday. Not their anniversary. Not even a planned date night. He felt a flicker of panic crawl up his spine.

Did I forget something?

He scrambled mentally, flipping through his internal calendar like a gambler searching for a winning hand. Nothing. Blank. Then another thought crept in. Did she mess up? Did she mess up something and this was her peace offering?

He swallowed hard.

Nah. She knew if she wanted to make me forgive her, all she had to do was just suck me till I forgot what I was mad at her about to begin. Man does she have a skillful tongue, I can't wait to feel it wrapped around my..

His thoughts were crude, attempting humor to settle down his nerves. A smirk tugged at his lips, but it was a thin veil to the tension now blooming in his gut.

Alex stood frozen in the doorway, his black tee clinging to his broad frame, jeans scuffed from a long day. His heart thudded, not from the Tonight Show spotlight he'd just left, but from this—this feast, at all the effort Monica had put into all this. The spread was staggering, each dish a favorite they'd savored on late-night dates or stolen weekends. And from what he could tell Monica had cooked it all—hours, maybe a full day of work.

Then he looked up—and saw her.

Monica stood behind his chair at the head of the table—her hands resting lightly on the top rail, her body still—her deep maroon dress hugging her curves, tasteful yet tantalizing. Her face was calm, but her eyes gave her away. She was nervous.

This is serious.

Monica Bellucci was never nervous.

Monica's heart fluttered as she watched Alex, her fingers gripping the chair's back. He's spooked, but he's trying to hide it. She'd spent all day in the kitchen, chopping, simmering, tasting, pouring love into every dish. Not for a mistake, not for a special day, but for this moment.

The weight of her news—good and bad—pressed on her chest, but his presence grounded her. He's my rock, always has been. She forced a smile, willing her nerves to settle.

"Who'd you run over?" Alex quipped, his voice light but strained, a half-smirk breaking the tension.

Monica giggled, the sound easing her tight shoulders and shattering the thick tension. God, he's good at that. Her smile softened, fond and warm, as she nodded toward his seat.

"Sit, love," her eyes said, and Alex obeyed, taking off his jacket, he slung it over a chair and sat down on the high-backed chair at the table's head.

The moment he did so, she moved closer, her arms came around his shoulders, warm and soft and grounding. She pressed a kiss to the top of his head. His eyes closed involuntarily as he surrendered to her touch.

The scent of his cologne—woodsy, sharp—mingled with the food's warmth, and she felt him relax under her touch.

Alex's worries melted, his schemes and empire-building fading as Monica's embrace wrapped him in a cocoon of safety. Fuck, I don't deserve her. He thought as her kiss sent a shiver through him, and he smiled, pure and unfiltered, the weight of Studio Monarch and Monarch Interactive Games lifting for a moment as Alex forgot about the empire he was building. Forgot the betrayals, the gossip, the lies, and the weight of the future.

"Will you—" he started, but she cut him off, her teeth grazing his earlobe, a playful nip that made his breath hitch.

"You know I've never hidden anything from you," Monica whispered, her voice a sultry murmur against his ear. She slid around, settling onto his lap, her maroon dress riding up slightly, her curves pressed against him. "I've got two things to tell you. One good, one bad. So... which do you want first?"

Alex's pragmatism kicked in, his mind already bracing. Bad news first, always. "The bad one, please," he said, his tone steady, eyes locked on hers. "And don't worry, no matter how bad it may seem, I'll stand by you and we'll figure it out together."

Monica's heart swelled, a radiant smile breaking across her face. He means it. Every word. She leaned in, kissing him deeply, pouring all her love into it—every late night, every shared dream, every moment they'd fought for. The kiss lingered, seconds stretching, her lips soft yet fierce against his. Alex reciprocated, his hand sliding down and squeezing her butt, their connection electric, unspoken vows renewed.

When their lips parted, Monica rested her forehead against his, breath slightly shaky, her voice a gasp. "You'll have to find someone else for Pepper Potts in Iron Man."

Alex froze, his OCD screaming—Pepper's locked in, multi-project contract, perfect casting!—but his love for Monica silenced it. Not a word of rebuke, not a flicker of anger. She's worth more than any plan. His eyes urged her to explain, searching her face. Why back out now? You wanted this role.

Monica's silence stretched, her nerves creeping back as she silently observed him. He had blinked. Once. Twice. But no outrage, no visible disappointment. Just a patient look, waiting for the rest of the story. That, more than anything, told her how far they'd come.

He's not mad, but he's waiting. She had begged him to play the role, signed the contract, even worked as his secreatary to get practical experinece for the role, but now… things are different and she has to tell him what she found out this morning.

She felt his gaze, steady, patient, and her heart raced, hoping he'd guess the reason.

Alex's mind churned, ticking through possibilities. Scheduling conflict? Creative differences? Health?

He eliminated each—Monica was committed, healthy, aligned with his vision. Then it hit, a reason so improbable, so longed-for, he barely dared hope.

No other explanation fits.

His pulse quickened, Sherlock Holmes' maxim echoing: When you've eliminated all else, whatever remains, however improbable, must be true. He needed to hear it from her.

"What's the good news?" he asked, voice soft, eyes intense.

Monica's breath caught, her hand trembling as she touched his cheek. Here it is. "I'm pregnant, Alex," she said gently, her voice steady despite the storm inside. "You're going to be a father."

His breath caught.

The world, the room, the food—all of it fell away.

Alex's vision blurred, a single tear rolling down his left cheek—a rarity for a man who'd faced boardrooms and red carpets unflinching.

Pregnant. Finally? After all this time.

He pulled her close, arms wrapping around her like he'd never let go, his lips finding hers in a kiss that spoke of gratitude, love, fear, and joy. "Thank you," he mumbled against her skin, "I love you, I love you." His voice cracked, raw with emotion.

Monica's fears dissolved, her small doubt—that Hollywood's cynicism might taint him, that he'd react with cold pragmatism—vanished. He's not his father. She knew Alex's past, the bastard who'd sired him, a shadow Alex had vowed to outshine. He'll be an incredible dad. Her smile widened, tears pricking her eyes as she held him, their shared dream finally real.

They'd been trying for over a year.

Monica's mind drifted, the memory sharp. Over a year of trying, nearly every night when their schedules aligned, their passion a constant despite the odds. The doctor's visit, her tests—nerve-wracking, her fear of being "broken" haunting her. But she was fine, in her prime.

Alex, though, carried the weight: hyperspermia and hyperlibido, the doctor said, explaining his relentless drive, his enlarged anatomy that Monica adored, her size kink a private thrill. God, I love him, every inch.

But the news wasn't all bright—low fertility, a slim chance of conception, not impossible but daunting. But she didn't care. Not about any of it. Not when she loved everything about him—the way he touched her, the way he looked at her like she was a miracle.

And so they had kept trying, regular and fervent, and now, against all odds, and finally it had happened.

After a few more minutes of being wrapped in each other, he pulled away just enough to smile. "So... do you still want to be in Iron Man?" he asked, his pragmatism resurfacing, softened by love, his hand tracing her back.

Monica nodded, her hair brushing his shoulder, dark waves catching the chandelier's glow. "More than anything," she said, biting her lip, worry creeping in.

"But filming starts in six months and by then I'll be well into my second trimester, showing a baby bump. I can't sprint through Stark's office or dodge the chaos as Pepper. Trying to hide it behind a clipboard or folder will just make it look absurd, and tryin to CG it away is not worth it as just making sure it is consistent enough in every frame will be a nightmare."

"Dropping the role is the only way."

Alex smiled fondly as he asked, "And when and where did you learn the complexity of CGI work?"

Inwardly though he couldn't help but think how caring she was, as she was willing to give up the dream role just so that he won't be inconvenienced. 'I must've been a hero who saved a nation in my past life that I got her in this life.'

She replied with an impish grin. "My hubby taught me, he is a very talented director.

"Oh is he now?" He grinned as he played around with her soft yet firm butt, squishing it as he pleased.

"Yes." She nodded, keeping her answer short so as to not moan from the pleasure of his teasing hand.

"It's good that you remembered that your husband is a director but did you forget that he is also the owner of Marvel Studios." He teased lovingly, his voice warm but edged with a steely resolve like he had already made up his mind.

"I'm the sole investor, executive producer, and the director. All it will take me is one phone call, and the shooting schedule will be reshuffled. We'll shoot all your Pepper scenes before your first trimester is even over— that way no one'll suspect a thing."

Monica's eyes widened, conviction dawning, but a playful glint sparked. "And about the promotion?" she challenged, leaning closer, her breath grazing his jaw. "I'll be waddling by summer, Alex, heavy with our baby."

Alex's eyes smoldered in response flaring with barely held back lust as he used every bit of his self control and discipline to not rip that beautiful maroon dress off of her and fu** raw right there on the dining table.

But he didn't act on his impulsive thoughts, instead his mind raced to think of a solution to fix the problem. "I'll push the release of Ironman to the month of September, maybe even on the 1st, like Spider-Man: First Swing."

"The buzz will be insane, and you'll be glowing, not waddling." He nudged her forehead with his, eyes dancing. "Any other excuses, or are you ready to be my Pepper?"

Monica laughed, the sound bright and free, her nerves gone. He's a force of nature. She shook her head, starting to rise for her seat, the feast's aromas—spicy curry, buttery prawns—calling her to begin.

But Alex's hand caught her waist, swift and gentle, pulling her back onto his lap. Her curves settled against him, the maroon dress soft under his fingers, her warmth a tether.

He leaned in, lips brushing her ear, voice a tender murmur. "Don't leave me just yet. Let's share every bite tonight—you feed me, I'll feed you, right here, just us."

Monica's heart skipped, a blush warming her cheeks, her smile radiant. Perfect. She nodded, reaching for a momo, drowning in its chili sauce, its pale surface was glistening with a scarlet sheen.

Lifting it up, she held it to his lips.

"First taste's yours," she whispered, as Alex's laughter, warm and unguarded, filled the room, their love sealing the night.
