The Goldenrod Department Store stood in the southern part of the city. Despite its rather plain name, this wasn't some outdated outlet for second-hand goods it was the largest Pokémon retail center in all of Goldenrod, and arguably the biggest in Johto.
The building had six stories above ground and two below, making eight floors total. Its interior was bright, spacious, and filled with golden lights. While it specialized in Pokémon-related gear, it also had plenty to offer casual shoppers looking to browse or relax.
Kai and Erika entered the department store and were immediately greeted by a lively crowd. It wasn't just Trainers plenty of fashionable locals were here as well.
Clearly, this place was a hotspot, just like the guides had said.
The first floor was dedicated to beauty products and accessories perfect for Trainers constantly exposed to the elements. Kai walked with Erika as she picked up a moisturizing toner and a few face masks.
After all their long, sun-drenched days on the road, Erika's skin had taken a beating, and these items were well-deserved.
The second floor was themed "Travel Essentials." It catered to traveling Trainers and stocked all the practical gear one might need. Here, Kai restocked some Poké Balls and potions.
They moved on quickly to the third floor: "Victory Awaits." This level specialized in battle items, but Kai had never been a fan of using those in fights, so he and Erika continued on.
The fourth and fifth floors also focused on Pokémon-related goods, each with its own niche. While they didn't spend much time browsing, Kai made a key purchase a Metal Coat.
He was no stranger to this item. He'd once used it to evolve his Crystal Onix into a Crystal Steelix. Now, he planned to do the same with his Scyther.
It was almost poetic. The Metal Coat was known to trigger the evolution of only two Pokémon: Steelix and Scizor. And Kai just happened to own both.
This item felt like it was made for him.
After more than an hour of shopping, the two arrived at the sixth floor "Take a Break." As the name suggested, this level was designed for rest and relaxation. It was also the most crowded and vibrant.
Following online reviews, Kai and Erika dined at one of the floor's most popular restaurants.
Soft, elegant music filled the air. The atmosphere was perfect. The two sat across from each other, chatting and laughing like any couple on a date.
In fact, anyone passing by would have assumed they were exactly that an affectionate young couple out on the town.
Before they knew it, dinner was over.
Since it was still early, they decided to catch a Pokémon movie that was currently in theaters. By the time the credits rolled and they exited into the cool night, the city lights had already replaced the fading sun.
With their shoulders lightly brushing, they made their way back to the guesthouse they'd reserved earlier.
After checking in, Kai escorted Erika to her room. Just as he turned to leave, Erika looked back with a warm smile in her eyes.
"Thanks for spending the day with me," she said. "I had a really great time."
Caught in her gaze, Kai blurted out without thinking, "If you enjoyed it... I'll go shopping with you anytime."
As soon as the words left his mouth, he realized how it sounded like a confession.
Erika seemed to think so too. She paused, blinked, and then smiled so brightly it made Kai's heart skip a beat. She said nothing more, just turned and disappeared into her room.
That smile echoed in his mind.
Kai took a deep breath, trying to calm the sudden rush of emotion. He went to his room and flopped back on the bed, staring up at the ceiling.
No matter how hard he tried, the flutter in his chest refused to settle.
Maybe it's true… Maybe there's no such thing as pure friendship between a guy and a girl.
The longer they traveled together, the deeper their bond grew. It was getting harder to deny his feelings. Especially after the whole Maya situation… it was like something inside him had been set free.
Letting Erika come along on this journey? It was starting to feel like the best and worst decision he'd made.
Still restless, he finally gave in and took a cold shower to snap himself out of his thoughts.
Feeling more in control, Kai grabbed a Poké Ball and stepped out into the courtyard. He released Scyther and held up the newly purchased Metal Coat.
Examining his Pokémon from head to toe, Kai smiled. "Scyther, it's time. Let's evolve."
Scyther looked at the item in Kai's hand, understanding instantly. It gave a firm nod.
As the former leader of its swarm, Scyther had always been a fierce and battle-hardened warrior. It had no hesitation about evolving.
Sensing something exciting about to happen, Gengar materialized from the shadows, hovering nearby with gleaming curiosity.
Kai stepped forward and pressed the Metal Coat against Scyther's forehead. The moment it made contact, Scyther's body burst into radiant white light.
Drawn by the sudden flash, Erika peeked through her window. Fresh from her shower, she stood in a yukata, gave Kai a gentle smile, then turned her gaze toward the light.
She already knew what this was. Back at the store, she'd seen the way Kai looked at that Metal Coat. So this didn't surprise her one bit.
Kai pulled his attention away from Erika and turned back to Scyther.
He was familiar with the glow of evolution. He stepped back, and just as he stopped, the light faded.
Standing before him now was a sleek, crimson Pokémon Scizor.
Scyther had successfully evolved.
Scizor's entire body was clad in deep red armor. Two pairs of translucent wings extended from its back, though mostly for show. The claws were large, metallic, and sharp enough to crush nearly anything.
Kai couldn't stop admiring the new form. He pulled out his Pokédex and scanned it.
Pokédex Entry:
Scizor. The Pincer Pokémon. Bug and Steel Type. Scizor's body is as hard as steel, tougher even than forged iron. Its wings regulate body temperature during battle to prevent overheating. Despite its sleek form, it boasts immense offensive power. With its steel-tipped pincers, it can crush even the hardest of objects.
Kai lowered the Pokédex and looked back at Scizor, pride welling up in his chest.
