Currently, although there are successful records of artificial breeding abroad, most of the golden cats bred are close relatives.
According to domestic records, the Huanan Golden Cat seems to no longer exist, and now most are Sichuan Golden Cats. Additionally, the nominate subspecies still exist in some zoos.
The Cold Golden Cat should belong to the nominate subspecies (populations from low-altitude forest areas in Southwest China extending to Southeast Asia and Sumatra Island), and when its offspring are released, the genes they continue are still from the nominate subspecies. As for whether the traditional Huanan Golden Cat population still exists, the scientific community has not yet reached a conclusion.
Of course, the relationship between golden cat subspecies is relatively close, and they are actually difficult to distinguish based on appearance alone.
