In a daze, Chief Matthew reacted. He hesitated for a moment, and his tense body slowly relaxed.
Lance could hear the friction sound between skin when he rubbed his face on the other end of the line; he must be exhausted.
"They're innocent, they weren't involved in our operation, you shouldn't have done this!" This was what Chief Matthew said after rubbing his cheek for a while.
The fact that Lance could make this call showed that some things had already become a fait accompli.
He wanted to awaken... the possible mercy within Lance, though it was merely his wish, "Let them go, if you have anything against me, come at me!"
Lance's voice was as calm as when he first answered the call, "Those drivers, and our young lads, they're innocent too."
The calmer the tone, the heavier it weighed at this moment.
Chief Matthew couldn't help but say, "They were transporting illegal goods, they're criminals!"
