An Yi gave plenty of examples from around them. Some women, in order to look pretty, let their own children go hungry and cold, unable to maintain a household. Others, grandparents with a preference for boys, favor the grandson over the granddaughter. It's not uncommon for granddaughters to be neglected to the point of starvation; some even suffer from disabilities from a young age and can't bear children when they're older, or they ignore hygiene during their menstrual period, leading to frequent infections.
What's the family principle?
The outer clothes can be shabby, but the inside must stay warm. There's no need to show off to others or compete; as long as you live well yourself, that's enough.
