Chapter 77 - After the Storm

The next morning, the rain had passed, leaving the city washed clean beneath a golden sunrise. Lila stood at her balcony, a mug of tea in hand, watching the world awaken. It was quiet. Peaceful. Rare. And somehow, it felt earned.

She hadn't slept much. Not from stress this time—but because her mind had finally begun to slow enough to reflect. Ethan's words from the night before echoed in her head: "Maybe we're entering a time where peace is finally an option."

It had taken her so long to reach this point—to allow softness, vulnerability, and joy into the same spaces she'd filled with ambition and independence. She still wasn't entirely sure what that balance looked like. But she was ready to find out.

Her phone buzzed gently against the wooden railing. A text from Ethan:

Ethan: Are you awake? Coffee date before the day kidnaps us again?

She smiled.

Lila: Yes. Your place or mine?

Ethan: Mine. I have chocolate croissants. The real ones. From that ridiculous French bakery you love.

Lila: Be there in 20.

Ethan's apartment was warm with sunlight and the smell of strong coffee. She let herself in with the key he'd given her weeks ago—something they hadn't talked about much, but quietly agreed upon.

He looked up from the kitchen counter as she entered, wearing a soft grey hoodie and a sleepy grin. "Good morning, boss lady."

She rolled her eyes playfully. "If you call me that again, I'm taking your croissants."

"I'd like to see you try."

They shared a kiss—gentle, familiar, no longer hesitant. This was no longer the electric beginning of something unstable, but the steady rhythm of something real.

They sat on the couch with their coffee and breakfast, knees touching, sharing stories of ridiculous client meetings and bizarre pitch requests. For the first time in what felt like months, Lila laughed without a trace of weight behind it.

"Do you ever think," she said after a pause, "about how different things would've been if we met under different circumstances? If we weren't in the same company, if I wasn't your boss."

Ethan looked thoughtful. "Maybe we wouldn't have clashed so much at the beginning. But I don't know... I think the storm made us sharper. Made us see each other. We didn't get lost in the easy parts."

She studied him for a long moment, the way his fingers curled around his mug, the slight scar near his chin from that fall in college, the way he looked at her like she was something wild and beautiful and strong.

"You still see me," she murmured.

"Always."

The moment stretched. She leaned forward, rested her forehead gently against his. "I don't want this to get lost when the next deal comes in. When things get busy again."

"It won't. We've worked too hard to lose now."

She nodded, letting his words settle deep inside her.

Later that afternoon, back at the office, there was news. A sudden board meeting had been called. Apparently, a major player in the tech industry had taken notice of their latest pitch and was requesting a joint development discussion.

Lila blinked at the email. Ethan whistled behind her.

"This is it, isn't it?" he said. "We're officially on the map."

Her heart thudded—not with panic this time, but excitement. It wasn't just about the company anymore. It was about them, the team they'd built, the future they were carving out together—both professionally and personally.

And this time, she wouldn't face it alone.
