Chapter 18: Shadows in the Plains

---

1. An Uneasy Silence

The ruins were quiet, the fire casting faint, flickering light against the crumbling walls. Alex sat sharpening his makeshift iron spear, his mind still buzzing with the day's spell studies.

Lila adjusted her bandaged leg, her dagger resting within easy reach. "Something's off tonight," she muttered, glancing toward the open entrance of their shelter.

Alex paused. "What do you mean?"

"The air feels... heavy. Like something's out there."

Before Alex could respond, a low, rhythmic scraping echoed through the ruins. The skeletal minions at the entrance stiffened, their glowing eyes locking onto the shadows.

"Get ready," Alex said, gripping his spear tightly.

---

2. Enter the Sentinels

The sound of footsteps grew louder, accompanied by faint metallic screeches. Three hulking figures emerged from the darkness—ancient suits of armor, glowing faintly purple, their movements erratic and unnatural.

"What the hell?" Lila whispered, standing with a wince.

Alex squinted, activating Inspect on the approaching figures.

---

Inspect Activated:

Plains Sentinel

Description: Semi-organic creatures that inhabit abandoned suits of armor, using them as mobile hives. The parasites survive by scavenging mana-rich ruins and hunting other creatures.

Strengths: Durable, resistant to physical attacks.

Weaknesses: The parasite core within the chestplate is vulnerable to heat and precise strikes.

---

"They're not just armor," Alex said, his voice tight. "There's something alive inside—parasites. If we destroy the core, we can take them down."

Lila grimaced. "Great. Just what we needed—armor with a built-in infestation."

The Sentinels let out a low, eerie screech, their glowing cores pulsing in unison.

---

3. The First Strike

One Sentinel lunged forward, swinging its rusted blade at Lila. She rolled to the side, slashing at its joints, but her dagger skittered harmlessly off the ancient metal.

"These things are tough!" she shouted.

Alex raised his hand, channeling mana into his first spell.

Bone Spear.

A jagged spike of bone erupted from the ground, striking the Sentinel in the chest. The impact cracked its armor, exposing a writhing, purple mass of tendrils within. The parasite screeched, its movements growing erratic.

"There's the core!" Alex yelled.

Lila darted in, driving her dagger into the exposed tendrils. The Sentinel collapsed with a metallic thud, the parasite's glow fading into darkness.

"One down!" she called.

---

4. Fire and Ice

The second Sentinel moved faster, its glowing core pulsing brighter. It lunged at Alex, its blade narrowly missing as he dodged to the side.

Ember Flare.

Flames burst outward in a fiery ring, engulfing the Sentinel. The heat warped its armor, and the parasite inside writhed violently, its tendrils shriveling under the intense heat.

---

System Update:

Mana: 93/120

---

The Sentinel staggered, and Alex quickly followed up with Ice Shard. The freezing spike struck the weakened core, shattering it. The creature collapsed, its armor clattering to the ground.

---

System Update:

Mana: 83/120

---

"Two down," Alex muttered, sweat dripping down his face.

---

5. The Final Sentinel

The last Sentinel was larger, its chestplate cracked to reveal a pulsating mass of purple tendrils. It let out a deafening screech, charging at full speed.

Alex's skeleton minions intercepted, grappling with the hulking creature. The parasite lashed out, severing one skeleton's arm with a powerful swing.

Alex raised his hand, summoning another Bone Spear. The jagged spike pierced the parasite's core, but the creature continued to thrash.

"It's not enough!" Alex shouted.

Lila darted in, leaping onto the Sentinel's back and driving her dagger deep into the exposed core. The parasite screeched one final time before collapsing, the light in its core fading.

---

System Update:

Mana: 71/120

Experience Gained: 25 XP

---

6. Aftermath

The ruins fell silent once more, the remains of the Sentinels strewn across the ground. Alex sank to his knees, exhaustion washing over him.

"That was disgusting," Lila said, kicking at the collapsed core of one Sentinel. "What even are these things?"

"They're survivors," Alex said after a pause, inspecting the writhing remains of the parasites. "They've adapted to a world without people. Using armor like a hermit crab uses a shell."

Lila grimaced. "Clever, but disgusting."

Alex crouched beside one of the cores, a dark thought creeping into his mind. The parasite glistened faintly, its body pulsing with mana.

"What if we ate it?" he muttered.

Lila stared at him, horrified. "What did you just say?"

"Think about it," Alex said, his voice low. "If it's surviving off mana, it might give us a boost. We're barely scraping by as it is."

Lila recoiled. "Alex, that's insane. You don't know what it would do to you."

Alex hesitated, the thought lingering. "You're right. For now."

---

7. Reflecting on the Fight

Later, as they sat by the fire, Alex stared at the shattered remains of the Sentinels.

"If these things are rare in the plains," he said, "why are they here now?"

Lila nodded. "Maybe they've spread, or maybe the ruins draw them in. Either way, we need to be careful."

Alex glanced at his system screen, noting the slight increase in his skills and mana regeneration.

---

System Prompt:

Combat Summary:

Enemies Defeated: 3 Plains Sentinels

Experience Gained: 25 XP

Skill Proficiency Increased: Bone Spear (Level 1 → 2)

Mana: 75/120 (Natural Regeneration)

---

"Whatever brought them here," Alex said, "I have a feeling we're going to see more of them."

Lila's gaze shifted to the horizon, where faint purple glows flickered in the distance. "Then we'd better be ready."
