The waiting room was too quiet.
It was the kind of quiet that cost money. Dr Otto's office in Berlin did not feel like a doctor's office. It felt like a five star hotel that decided to practice medicine. The floors were pale marble that reflected the soft light from the recessed ceiling. The chairs were deep cream leather with low wooden tables between them. There were fresh flowers in a tall glass vase, white lilies and eucalyptus, and the air smelled like citrus and something clean that I could not name.
I sat with my hands folded in my lap and tried not to look around too much.
It was so different from the one in Bloom. That office had felt humble. Small town Texas feeling. Plastic chairs and a TV in the corner playing the news on mute. Magazines that were three months old. Mrs Delgado at the front desk who knew everyone's grandmothers.
This one was Berlin. This one was money and experience and silence.
