LAST SATURDAY, WALKER HOUSE
Nick and his family were having breakfast. As they were eating, Nick said
"Mom, Dad, I am going on a date. I will be coming back late."
Kat, hearing this stopped eating and looked at his with excitement and asked
"Who is it? What is her name?"
"Calm down, mom, it's just a date. Her name Elizabeth. She is a sophomore like me."
"Okay, you should treat her well." Kat advised thinking her son will mess it up
"But brother what are you doing so late?" Zach asked with a mischievous grin on his face. When Kat heard what Zach, her face darkened and Nick started to sweat seeing his mother's face and was about to deny whatever her mind was cooking up, when he heard boisterous laugh followed by a voice telling
"That's my son. He has got my skills." But Jon soon shut his mouth when he saw his beloved glaring at him
"Yeah, He's got skills." Zach said nonchalantly teasing him while Nick glared at him and then spoke
"Mom, I will come back before 10 PM. Don't worry." When Kat heard she sighed and said
"Okay, first get to know her and then get to the next steps. And please I don't want to interviewed by Los Angeles Times 'As the mother of 16-year-old renowned author and a father.'"
"Awesome, I like it." Zach cheered and said
Nick, understanding if he keeps this topic on, he will be nagged until he leaves here changed the topic and told his dad
"Dad, how about we buy dog? It is said that animals can detect supernatural. What do you say?"
"Yes, it is a good option. Then let's go buy tomorrow." Jon said after some thought
"Okay." Nick said as he promptly finished his food. After that he took his jeep keys and drove to Elizabeth's house.
Nick pulled up his jeep at the drive-way of Elizabeth's house. He got out of the jeep, walked up to the door and rang the doorbell. A few second later, the door opened and a woman in her mid-30s was sizing up Nick. Nick feeling awkward and uncomfortable introduced himself
"Hello, I am Nicholas walker."
"hello I am Joanne, Beth's mom. Come in." Joanne introduced and invited him in.
After nick went in, Joanne closed the door and led him into the living room and said
"Sit down for a minute. Beth is getting ready. Do you want anything to drink?"
"Can I get some water?" nick asked nervously
"ok." Joanne said and went into the kitchen.
A middle-aged man was coming down the stairs buttoning up his shirt as he said to her
"Honey, I am going out."
"Yeah, and honey, this is Nicholas, Beth's friend." Joanne introduced him hinting at something.
"Oh, ohhh, that Nicholas, nice to meet you, son." Aaron said
"Nice to meet you, Mr. Oberon." Nick replied awkward and nervous
"so, Beth didn't say much about you. How did you two meet?" Aaron asked
"at Lydia's party last night. I was born in New York and lived there for last 17 years" Nick replied confidently
"17 years? So, you are a junior at high school" Joanne asked
"No, a sophomore."
"So, why come here? And why are you still a sophomore?"
"Well, last year something happened in our family so I had to take a break year. After that New York started to become suffocating, so we moved here."
"Mom, Dad, what is these hundred questions and please stop pressuring him to answer that. He doesn't feel comfortable speaking about it."
Nick turned to the sound and stood there mesmerized for a few seconds and said
"You look beautiful"
"Thanks, you look handsome too."
"Thanks. Shall we go?"
"Yeah. Bye, Mom, Dad"
"Come back before 10 pm and you, young man, bring our precious daughter back safely"
"Yes, sir."
Then Nick walked out first and opened the door of the jeep for Elizabeth. After she got in, he got in the driver's seat and drove away.
IN THE JEEP
"So, what's our plan for the day?" Elizabeth asked
"Well, I have planned some things but would you like do something specifically."
"Nah, we will follow your plan. So, what's first?"
"You will see."
"Hmm-mm"
After a short drive, they arrived at the mall, parked the car and went in.
"Did you have breakfast?"
"Yeah."
"Well, let's get something to drink. What do you want?"
"Vanilla milkshake."
"Two milkshakes. One vanilla and chocolate. To go."
"10 dollars."
"Here."
After an few minutes, the waiter whipped up two milkshakes for us, we took it and walked around the mall.
"So, what's the plan? We are not going to walk around the mall, all day, right?"
"of course not. Let's go shopping but there's a catch."
"What's the catch?"
"We will both play a game. We will multiply the final score with 100 and that will be budget for shopping."
"But...?
"I will play against you that is if I get a score 100 you have to 110 and then we multiply the difference between our scores with 100. What do you say? Are you up for a challenge?"
"Bring it. I will empty your pockets today. So what game?
"Whac- a- mole."
They both finished their drinks and walked towards the arcade games section. After entering, they quickly found the game Whac-a-mole.
They both found a Whac-a-mole arcade, paid the fees and went to it.
"So, who will go first?"
"Ladies first."
"Okay."
She entered the coin and started playing. Surprisingly, she was very good it. in fact, very good. She scored 300 before the timer stopped.
"Wow, good reflexes."
"Let's see if you can beat me."
I put the coin and started the game. I missed one before the timer stopped while she became elated with winning.
"Well, don't be happy too soon. Let's play next game."
"Why can't take a loss?" she mocked me with a smug smile.
"Oh, bring it on. This time we will reduce the timer by a minute but increase the points to 20 for each one whacked. Are you up for it?"
"Hell, yeah. Game on."
We paid and two more coins for next game. I went first this time. With full concentration, I got a score of 260. Next, she went, confidently thinking she would win but a small mistake made her points 240.
"Oh yeah, I won." I said as I danced with joy mocking her.
She literally glared at me and proposed
"Don't be smug. You won one. I won one. Let's make do one final match. 30 seconds timer. 50 points. Are we playing or will you cower away?"
"Bring it on." I said as I bought another two coins and came back to the arcade where she was waiting.
"So, who goes first." She asked
"Let's toss. Heads you. tails me." I said as I tossed the coin.
"Heads." She said as took the coin and entered into arcade and started playing. She scored 500. Next was me, it was intense as her scores was heavy on me. I entered the coin and started playing. Before I knew it, timer stopped. When I looked at the scores, it was 400. I slumped on the floor while she danced joyfully, smugly looking at me.
