Chapter 98 - Put Me on the Table

The seizure order arrived at the second hour of the afternoon, four hours after the scan. It cited an Association regulation about unlicensed artificial beasts, it named a holding facility in the north district, and it carried a Directorate countersignature on the second page.

Luna read the second page of that order before she read the first one.

That is a habit she developed during a Cup bracket and it has never once failed her. A regulation is an argument reasonable people can differ about, while a countersignature tells you who wanted the document to exist.

The countersignature on that order carries a department number rather than a name. It is the same department number a man called Peyre gave across a table at the Verrand House eleven days earlier, in front of a woman who did not like him.

"They are not examining him," she said, "they are collecting him."
