Then I asked gently, moving my face a little closer to hers so she had no choice but to meet my eyes.

Akane's eyes widened behind the mask at the sudden proximity. She stiffened, then tried to recover her usual sharpness, though her voice came out a little uneven.

I chuckled softly.

Akane studied me for a longer moment, suspicion and curiosity mixing in her gaze. Her fingers tightened slightly on the edge of her cloak.
