The fairies were gathered around the dessert table sampling each of the many desserts in turn. The noblewomen were keeping their distance from the fairies out of fear, so no one else could get to the desserts.
Maria was also cautious of the fairies, but more than that, she was relieved to see that they were enjoying the food.
"Is the food to your liking, Lady Rose?" asked Maria.
"Yes, it's all very tasty. I'm impressed," said Rose. "If we have to destroy this country, we'll let these chefs live."
Maria maintained a pleasant smile while she panicked internally. Maria realized that human lives seem to have less value to fairies than sweets.
"You know," said Maria. "I like to do a little baking myself, perhaps I could prepare some desserts for you the next time you come here."
"That sounds good," replied Rose. "I'm looking forward to it."
