Chapter 399 - All Hail the Ghost King

Phoebe stared at the battlefield in shock. One move. Her ace Pokemon had been defeated in a single move, without even attempting to fight back.

Phoebe stared at the battlefield in shock. One move. Her ace Pokemon had been defeated in a single move, without even attempting to fight back.

This was going to be a very long battle.

As someone who could communicate with Ghost-type Pokemon, Phoebe could clearly feel Banette's emotions, the fear, trembling, and awe it experienced when facing Gengar. This only made her more curious about John's Gengar, and frankly, a little annoyed.

"Go, Mismagius!" Phoebe threw another Pokeball with renewed determination.

The witch-like Pokemon materialized on the battlefield, its level slightly higher than Banette's at 86. However, the result was exactly the same, Mismagius faced John's Gengar and immediately succumbed to the same overwhelming fear, trembling, and reverence.

It was like witnessing the king of all Ghost-types.

In the presence of this Ghost King, they had no ability to resist, not even the will to fight back.

"Gengar, Shadow Ball!" John commanded, deciding to capitalize on this unexpected advantage.

The purple little phantom grinned with obvious mischief, casually tossing a Shadow Ball like a uncle playing with a bowling ball as it floated toward Mismagius. It had absolutely none of the dignified bearing one might expect from a so-called Ghost King.

"Return!" Phoebe immediately grabbed Mismagius's Pokeball, recalling it before the attack could connect. She needed to confirm her suspicions, and there was no point wasting her team's fighting power.

But escaping wasn't so simple once Gengar had locked onto a target. The Shadow Ball in Gengar's hand suddenly became wreathed in brown mist as it pursued Mismagius even as it was being recalled.

CRACK!

The sound was simultaneous, Mismagius being pulled back into its Pokeball and the impact of the Dark-type move Pursuit.

Pursuit, when the target Pokemon is being switched out, the attack deals double damage. And since Gengar was using a Dark-type move against a Ghost-type Pokemon, that was double damage on top of double damage.

Quadruple damage.

Mismagius, now safely returned to its Pokeball, was either completely unconscious or critically injured.

"Little guy, you're getting more and more proficient with Dark-type moves," John chuckled. His Gengar, despite being a Ghost and Poison-type, seemed particularly skilled with Dark-type techniques for some reason.

 Gengar cackled maliciously.

Phoebe gritted her teeth in frustration. She'd never experienced such a one-sided battle in her life.

Taking out another Pokeball, she released her next Pokemon, a Sableye that landed gracefully, its level an impressive 90. At the same time, Phoebe revealed the Mega Ring on her right hand.

"Sableye, MEGA evolution!"

Sableye was immediately enveloped in brilliant rainbow light. When the MEGA evolution energy dissipated, it stood protected by a massive ruby shield on its back.

But Phoebe wasn't finished. She recalled Mega Sableye back into its Pokeball and revealed the Dynamax band on her left wrist. Light flickered, and the Pokeball grew to the size of a millstone before being hurled onto the battlefield.

In an instant, a gigantic ghost descended holding a colossal ruby shield, its presence turning the entire arena into a crimson-tinted world.

Mega Sableye in Dynamax form!

"Dynamax plus MEGA evolution?" John's eyes lit up with genuine interest as he studied the Pokemon before him.

He'd theorized about such combinations in the past, but he'd never thought it would actually be possible in practice. Even in his previous life's games and anime, there had never been a situation where Dynamax and MEGA evolution could be used simultaneously.

This Mega Sableye, having undergone both extreme gigantification and MEGA evolution, stood holding its giant ruby like a crystalline tower. Even facing the "King" Gengar, Phoebe could sense that while it still felt awe and fear, Sableye was now capable of challenging that overwhelming pressure.

"That's enough!" Phoebe declared, her eyes blazing with determination as she stared at John and Gengar.

"Sableye, Power Gem!"

The giant ruby in Mega Sableye's grasp immediately erupted with blinding light—fierce rays that surpassed even sunlight, condensing into ten straight laser beams that swept across the entire battlefield. Because Dynamax had magnified the ruby as well, this Power Gem attack was powerful enough to cover the entire arena. Unless someone could phase into the spirit world, there was no way to avoid it.

John had no intention of dodging. He pulled a Dark-type Z-Crystal from his pocket and embedded it into his Z-Power Ring.

"Z-Move: Black Hole Eclipse!"
