The heavy, damp air of the night clung to Raye's skin as he sprinted away from the ruins of the demon worshippers.
His boots slammed against the dirt path outside the hidden entrance, kicking up small clouds of dust that vanished almost immediately into the darkness.
Every muscle in his body was coiled tight, burning with a mix of adrenaline and frustration that refused to subside. He had moved with swift, lethal efficiency inside the base, finishing off the cultists without breaking a real sweat, but the lingering consequence of their final, desperate act hung heavy in the back of his mind.
The last cultist sacrificed her own life to hasten the summoning.
The ones he just fought were true fanatics, willing to burn away their own existence just to push a dark god's plan forward by a fraction of a day.
"Damn it all..."
