The night air was sharp, still carrying the faint scent of rain as Clara stood at her bedroom window, staring out into the dark garden below. The lights of the security posts glowed faintly, moving like watchful eyes over the fences and gates. She could almost feel them, Alex's men waiting, watching, tracking her every move.
It had been four days since she spoke to Terry, four days of silence from Victor, and four days of pretending everything in her world was fine. She tucked her children in every night, smiled at the right moments, and hid her shaking hands when the phone rang.
But inside, she was falling apart.
She knew Alex wouldn't stop watching her until he had proof. She could feel it in the way her phone sometimes lagged when she made calls, or how one of her guards always happened to appear whenever she stepped outside. He didn't trust her and maybe he was right not to. they both knew the truth.
