They never truly treated each other well, so how would they know that everything they did would ultimately become futile.
This is the way of the world; no one knows who will be right in the end, or whether you'll get everything you desire. Isn't this pretty good for them now? They can do what they want, listen to what they want, see who they want to see—this is their best thought. If everything is wrong in the end, there's nothing they can do about it.
