The voice snaps me out of my thoughts. I turn, already knowing who it is. He's the only one who ever comes into this lab. Well, my lab—tucked away in one of the Morne estate's side buildings. Honestly, how big is this place? There's the main house, then entire mini-compounds like this one, and I'm starting to suspect there are whole sectors I haven't even seen.
Benjamin walks in with a tray, and, like clockwork, my stomach growls. Conditioned response.
I step away from the table littered with formulas, notes, and mana-crusted tools.
"Thank you," I say, accepting the tray.
He smiles at me—the kind of smile that lights up his whole face and makes his green eyes catch the light. He insists they're a dull color. I disagree.
"What would you do without me?" he says, rolling his eyes in mock exasperation.
