Chapter Two Hundred and Twenty-Two
Asli dropped to her knees.
"No," she whispered. Blood covered the floor.
The old man's eyes had already gone still but she grabbed his shoulders anyway.
"Wake up." Her voice came out rough.
"Wake up!" She shook him harder. His head lolled uselessly.
"You don't get to do that." She gave him another shake. "You don't get to say something like that and die."
Her breathing grew uneven. "Wake up!" Her voice cracked.
"What were you going to say about Ahmet?"
Blood only dripped from his mouth.
"What is Ahmet? Who is he supposed to be to me? Tell me!"
Her fingers dug into his coat, searching… as if she could find the answers there.
"Talk!" she yelled, but still nothing came from him.
"What were you about to say?"
Her eyes widened.
"What is Ahmet to me?"
The repeated questions sounded ridiculous even to her own ears.
