Chapter Two Hundred and Thirteen
The apartment door clicked shut behind her. Laughter drifted from the living area, very light, and carefree. Josephine was sprawled across the couch, one leg tucked under her, while Matilda sat beside her, talking fast, with her hands moving as she spoke. Whatever it was, it had both of them giggling.
Asli didn't stop to ask what that was. She just walked past them like she hadn't heard a thing.
Matilda noticed anyway.
"Asli…" She pushed off the couch almost immediately, hurrying after her. "How was your mission?"
Asli glanced at her. Just once. A quick sweep of her eyes over her face, checking, mostly measuring before looking ahead again.
She kept walking.
By the time she reached the stairs, her hand was already on the handle.
"Where's your head tie?" she asked, almost absently.
Matilda smiled, as if waiting for her to ask that.
